My gf just called me about an accident. She rear ended a car and the 2 guys in there kinda hassled her, talking about their neck hurting. They got her information but refused to give her theirs. She got their license plate, took pics of the car, called 911 and they said their friend's neck hurt and took off "to go to the hospital". Seems real shady to me. I'm not sure what to do, i'm 40 min away right now. Looking up for info and searching online but just thought I'd shoot a thread here, maybe someone has similar experience.

This raises a huge red flag to me. So all she has of theirs is a license plate #?

Did she wait at the scene for the police to arrive and take statements?

if she has a decent insurance company they will investigate any injury issues. Once I bumped into a Lady who claimed all sorts of things. My insurance company really checked everything out and found out she wasn't telling the truth (she had a previous injury) and wound up not paying anything.

This is actually a common scam. As rear-end accidents are almost always viewed as the fault of the driver in the back. Con-artist stop suddenly, get hit and claim all kinds of bs to get money from the insurance co.

Hopefully she waited for the cops for them to at least get her side of the story which should help her with the insurance claims.

yea she waited for the cops. Although i'm not sure what happened after that cause her phone is out of battery.
I just think it's bullshit that they didn't give her any info. How the hell do we even prove that they were at the scene?

Why would you need to prove that you rear-ended someone? She should come out ok since the other car left the scene after refusing to exchange info. That would almost classify as a hit & run since they didn't properly identify themselves.

Also: A nice big WTF to Wikipedia's picture of a bloodied car with the back seats on fire as their hit & run example pic:

What i meant was what if the driver of the car didn't have a license, and ask his friend (who was not at the scene) to claim as the driver. How do we prove who was actually the driver, other than her words against his?

But luckily, she just came home and I found out she did get his driver license. Good girl . Cop was pretty nice about it, and tryna calm my gf by saying that they weren't suppose to flee the scene and it'd work against them if they try to claim for injury. Filed a report, called car insurance

It was her first accident and had to deal with 2 "thuggish guys", so she was really nervous not knowing what to do. It was my first time hearing about a "got hit and run". haha appreciate the help, guys.
wow and wow ^ x 2 Good luck OP!
Well, it *is* a thread about being rear-ended...

This is exactly why you shouldn't tailgate people.

Can you also explain how it's hit and run if she already got the driver's information before they left? Because it isn't. Sounds like the cop was just trying to calm your gf down after the accident.

On the brightside, your gf wasn't hurt and hopefully the passengers in the car she hit are ok too regardless of how "thuggish" they looked.

I don't think you can call this a hit and run, but they are supposed to stay until the police arrive at the scene.

The police need to know:
1. who was driving and if they have a valid license
2. if the car is registered to the driver
3. proof of insurance
4. was the driver under the influence of an intoxicating substance

By leaving the scene the only version of the accident the police have is that of kouleefoh's gf. Also, if they want to file a claim with her insurance company they will need the police report number. Obviously they don't have that since they didn't stick around. Of course they may have tried filing a report at a later time, not sure if the police will do that away from the scene.

BTW, only give out your insurance information. NEVER exchange personal information such as phone number or home address. This could lead to harassment by one of the parties.

Don't jump into conclusion. She wasn't tailgating. Accidentally stepped on the gas at the redlight. It's still her fault, but my point is don't jump to conclusion.

I was joking about the "got hit and run", i didn't say they hit and run. He did leave the scene before the cops showed up for a proper report, that's why i made that comment.

The passenger of the car was the one claimed to have neck pain, who is also the one refusing to give his info.

I'm not trying to side with her but the 2 guys were trying to bully her and cussing at her. SO "thuggish" were the words she used hence the quotation marks. I hope they're okay but now we wouldn't know 'cause they drove off. We'll find out through insurance eventually.

Accidents happen, it's never pleasant. But I know she's not the reckless driving type, so it's really just a mistake. Most of the times, people would be civilized about it, although frustration is understandable. But sometimes u just get really harsh people.

To the other "rear ended" comment, LOL, i did make that joke with her earlier
