Hey all, I'm looking to grab one of the Final Fantasies from PSN but need help in the decision. I'm looking at VI, VIII, or IX (already own VII) since I've not played them. I enjoy VII and loved II back in the day (which I believe is actually IV) but for some reason don't enjoy the "job" system much - maybe because I don't get it.

Anyway, what are the suggestions?

I've played all the final fantasies (except for the mmorpg ones), and out of all of them, I enjoyed FF9 the most. The graphics are amazing for the PSX generation, it has my favorite battle system, and it accompanies a great plot.

Final Fantasy 6 is also really amazing and has a great plot. I recommend that one too.

as for Final Fantasy 8, I didn' t get too deep into this one because I really didn't like it.

8 was my favorite one. But I'd recommend Tactics over 6-9. For reference I probably played 30% of FF6 ~3-4 years after it released though, beat 7, got to the last stage in 8 but stopped playing, played 20% of 9, and beat Tactics.

FF8 is my favorite PSX Final Fantasy, but its an acquired taste. FF6 is one of the best RPGs ever made though, can't go wrong. FF9 has aged the best out of the 3 PSX FFs, I'm replaying it currently and really enjoying it.

VIII and IX. VIII's battle system is among the best in the genre, if you like your battle systems to have a little complexity like I do. These two also have the best soundtracks in the series, by far, and great stories in my opinion. And IX is a very beautiful game.

VI is alright, but the battle system is (for the most part) rather boring, and the characters tend to be way too.. exaggerated. It's as if the writers were trying way too hard to give them unique personalities, and many of the characters just come off as one-dimensional cliches. There's the mad clown, the skirt-chasing prince, etc., and any time you see one of these characters, they will do their best to make damn sure you don't forget whichever mold they fit into.

IV has an excellent story and a writing style which is unique to the series, but the battle system is a bit bland. V has the best battle system of the SNES era, rich in character customization/development, but the rest of the game (story, soundtrack, ..) are largely unmemorable.

I'm currently playing IX right now again. It's in my top 5 RPG's of all time. You just fall in love with the characters from the start.

I don't know if I could pick it or Tactics as my all time favorite.

VI is good too. Can't really go wrong either way.

9 is also my favorite. I highly recommend it

For all you guys that recommend VI, one thing to consider is the horrible port job on the Playstation version as opposed to the original SNES or even the Wii virtual console version.

The load times after each battle are pretty bad.

It's really not as bad as everyone says.

It's definitely playable and if you want it on your PSP/Vita and haven't played the SNES version, the slight slowdown when loading menus probably won't be very noticeable. I remember playing it when the FF Anthology originally came out circa ~2002 after playing the SNES version multiple times and it just took a little getting used to. It's certainly not as bad as the Chrono Trigger PSX port... that was as bad as everyone says and should be avoided if at all possible.

I think the GBA version of FF6 might be the best version. Little touches like character portraits in the dialogue boxes, a slightly revamped translation that still pays homage to the Woosley script, and extra espers/content towards the end. Although, the wonderful soundtrack suffers a little on the GBA, the audio hardware just wasn't up to snuff to perfectly recreate how it originally sounded and music sounds just a tiny bit compressed.

Play em all!

Would love to, but the cheap ass in me says they're $10 a piece. If they were $6 I'd just grab 6,8,and 9 at once (granted I'm sure they're still well worth the $10 a piece).

Buy the discs and then resell em!

Final Fantasy has always been a mixed bag for me. I LOVED 6, full of great characters but they did all seem a tad stereotypical.

7 is THE most overrated Final Fantasy game. The story was god awful and the gameplay would have been MUCH more enjoyable if the materia system was done correctly. I feel like people only cling to this game due to nostaglia (which I can understand, at the time it WAS a sight to behold)

8 had an amazing story and I loved the Guardian Forces but disliked drawing magic from enemies...it simply felt very odd.

I didn't get the chance to put a ton of time into 9 and I plan on doing so very soon. I hear nothing but great things about it.

Tactics has hands-down the most intriguing story out of the lot and the gameplay is right up my alley. Ironically I think it's the only downfall the game has because many people are put off by tactics-style grid-based combat. If you give it a chance it will surely grow on you. It simply feels like you are in complete control and is a huge breath of fresh air compared to the others in the series. War of the Lions (PSP remake) is the way to go as they added voices, cutscenes and characters, not to mention fixing some things that were a tad broken.

I really disliked 9. I hated the giant heads and doll faces of the characters. The story was dull too.

I started playing FF V on the :psp: . Be warned it's very glitchy when it goes to the menu screen at times. (Gets glitchy like a old dusty nes cart).

I liked 8, and 7 was okay as well. (I liked the more mature, lean, look to the characters after 7). The junction system was a nice change as well.

If 7 ever drops below $10, I'll pick it up. Honestly never played all the way though 6, don't recall it being that memorable.
