Walmart accepting PS4/Xbox One preorders in-store on August 24th

Nintendonly

CAGiversary!
Just got the email. They are still using the layaway system way like they did with the Wii U last year, though.

EDIT: Wow, fail Didn't see the other thread that had the word "Walmart" towards the end of the title. Lock/delete/whatevs

EDIT2: Oh wait, that's a thread that was started back in June, but the title was edited recently. I don't see a thread just dedicated to this news.

Hmmm, never used Walmart before. How does their layaway system works? How much you gotta put down? Can you cancel anytime? Will this guarantee a console @ launch or its based on availability? etc. :)

My bro-inlaw works at Walmart and said that your console is guaranteed with a Pre-order. When the Wii U came out he had a pre-order in, I did not, I went with him and they still had a few extras left over for non pre-order customers, 1 black which I bought and 2 white. I believe the line up will be much longer for this though. I think you have to put 10% Down + a $5 layaway fee which you will get back upon pickup in the form of a Walmart GC. From there you can make payments whenever you want. Due to the way the registers work you must have 1 cent left owing so you can technically "buy" it on release day. You can cancel anytime but your $5 fee will be in the form of a GC. I'm in for a PS4 but debating on whether or not to pick up a XBONE to. If you know someone that works there you could always use their employee discount, I've done it but always paid in cash as the "employee" has to buy the item for them to allow the discount.

The $5 gift card depends on the state (my state forces Walmart to give the customer the option of choosing cash back), and if it is cash back, you might be able to apply it towards the total purchase, but I'm not too sure about that.

Work at a Wal-mart. Came in for 2nd shift today and my co-workers had already assembled the standees. Department manager had yet to get full details before he left . . . we're a smaller store, it's not uncommon for us to get merchandising material without directions. Everything that has already been explained falls in line with what our store did last year for the Wii U preorders.

Was kind of funny . . . clocked in, came out to the sales floor, and found 3 standees: XB1, PS4 and Saints Row 4. We have no good place to put any videogame standees. Just stuck the preorder stuff back by site to store by the end of the day to make room.

Small store: Electronics means D5 (games and movies), D72 (computers, printers, accessories), D87 (home and cell phones and accessories) and D7 (toys). Kind of envious of bigger stores where departments are more compartmentalized on days like today . . .

But I cannot understand the hype with the next gen systems. Has anyone looked at launch lineup?

Doesn't anyone remember how much dust their PS3 collected for the first few years?

I don't even get the point of even preordering. I'm sure I can walk into a Best Buy 1, 2 or 12 weeks later and see plenty stacked up nice and shiny for sale. The stock will be there. I'm honestly expecting "meh" sales. Like Wii U type sales or Vita.

Am I alone?

Yes I believe you are alone...the wii u was competing with a generation that it was 4 years late for where as these NEXT gen consoles are competing only against eachother.

I can't argue with this mentality (I usually say the same thing), but I'm preordering a PS4 because the $400 pricetag is a sweetspot value to me. I'll wait for the Xbox One to go down to clearance prices before I pick one up.

Yes! I think you are along in this chain of thought. The Wii U wasn't a next-gen system. These are. And for $400, the PS4 is very attractive. Lots of people wants one. I wouldn't be surprised at all if there was a shortage this Christmas.

I, too, wanted to wait a few years before picking one up. I didn't get my PS3 and 360 until Oct 2010. But that BF4 trailer looks good enough for me to reconsider getting a PS4 on Black Friday.

Anecdotally, as of 7:30pm (the time I left work), there were 2 Xbox One preorders and 10 PS4 preorders (a few from coworkers and me, and my store manager included).

Hopefully this trend continues.

I don't know what you're smoking, but the Xbox One launch line-up is one of the best launch line-ups I can remember in the past few generations. PS4 one is just ok, similar to PS3 one or the 360. Sure the Xbone launch is a lot of third-party, but it still has more compelling first party and/or exclusives at launch than the PS4.

Walmart has no layaway fee this year.

The other next gen systems will have third party support at launch.
More importantly, Xbox and PS gamers will actually support third party games.

Microsoft also delayed the launch in 8 countries, which may or may not be due to stock/production issues.
Could also mean they have smaller than expected stock and chose to focus strictly on North America, etc.

I'm sure they'll both have launch issues, though. Nothing ever goes smooth. :p

I remember pre-ordering the Wii at Walmart last year.  I had to walk the employee through the steps to do it.  It's sad when a CAG knows more about the system than the employees do.

Well, can't exactly say that, we did have the directions posted here to read, but if you're department is layaway, shouldn't you know what's coming up?

I pre-ordered mine right at midnight. I didn't have to pay a $5 layaway fee. The standees were up but no tags in them. Grant it, this was at 11pm on the 23rd but I went there at that time to ask if they were going to take pre-orders at midnight or later like around 5am. The girl working there didn't know about the in store reservation and asked the night time manager who did not know as well but went to look it up. He came back about 12:15 with some the reservation tickets printed out since he could not find the actual tickets. Its only 10% down and I payed $42.69 after tax and have till 12/13/13 to pay it off and pick it up. Seeing as how there no games for it at launch and I will be busy with paragoning my D3 characters for the expansion I'm not too concerned about getting it release day. I wanted it for Metal Gear and Gran Turismo, the reasons I have bought all of Sony's systems so far, and to really stick it to Micro$oft.

Layaway is not offered year-round, and the associates are not trained on how to do this stuff until the last minute. Thankfully, my Walmart is comprised of problem solvers, so we figure this stuff out without screwing up.

I remember trying to preorder a wii u last year from walmart. The employees had no idea what a wii u was and looked at me like I was crazy. I'm not going to even bother trying to preorder a ps4 from them.

You will not be able to walk into a store weeks later and get a system. If you have bought a real console (not a wii u) at launch like the 360/ps3/ original wii you will see that your out of luck for months. Some stores will get small stock weeks after released but they will announce it in advance so people will be lining up to get those stock as well for christmas. Sales arent gonna be like Wii U and Vita. People have been passing on buying a wii u for the simple fact that the new xbox and ps4 are releasing so most people have been holding off. Pre orders for the new xbox/ps passed over a million months ago. Wii U has been out 1 year and has only sold like 3mil worldwide. The intrest level is much broader for the xbox/ps.

I just pre ordered in store today here in Texas at my local Walmart Supercenter (open 24 hours). Does anyone know if I can go pick it up on release day at midnight? I asked the lady at the counter taking my pre order but she had no idea.

You will be able to pick it up at midnight on release day. Wm typically does midnight releases on major releases such as this.

So will these things be worth anything down the road and is it wort my time to preorder one to resell later (just one, I'm not buying up stock) or probably not enough to warrant spending the cash and waiting?

Honestly, I don't think it's worth buying to resell. I currently have a pre order at Wal-Mart and they had 10+ pre orders available. I also went to target but they only had one reservation card on display. I'm going to cancel my Amazon pre order since I can pick up my walmart one at midnight.

My walmart has roughly 10 pre-orders on Xbox One's and 36 on PS4. I live in a college town and am pretty impressed. I was told by the electronics guy that he was told for every 10 pre-orders the store receives they get an additional 2 consoles for in-store sale. Meaning my store's looking at only one xbox one thus far.

I personally pre'd the XBO, I've been struggling to decide what to get but the kinnect's randomly fun stuff (doodle jump, hole in the wall, fam-based stuff) sold me sadly, nothing more.

For the life of me, I cannot get a PS4 preorder going on Walmart.com. There's no "add to cart" option. I'm assuming that means they are sold out at this point.

I was pretty excited about the pick your bundle and was going to bite on it.

Sorry to bump a month old thread but I just wanted to let you know that my friend who works there said their discount (10%) doesn't apply to any pre-orders. If you manage to find a console the day it's released then the discount should apply.

He paid 315 + Tax on his wii u pre-order upon pickup. It's automatically adjusted. Same as a black Friday sale, if you pick up your order on a sale you will get the sale price, whether you paid more or not during the time in layaway, the rest will be refunded.

No, you're right. My buddy wants to get a PS4 and he's having a hard time ATM. It's surprising to me, honestly.

If I was a younger kid, I'd be pre ordering. But I grew up on the NES/SNES era, so I've seen all this before. To me, it just doesn't make sense to buy Day 1. I'm fortunate to have a high end PC, so its not like I won't be able to play latest games on ultra settings. Even if I didn't, though, I'm very happy with current gen graphics.

Dark Souls 2 will keep me busy until a price drop and the release of new games. =D

Side note, I feel bad for the chumps that are gonna drop $$$$$$$$$$$+ on Craigslist and eBay for a PS4. I saw one selling for $10,000. SMH.

*Update - Just sent the person selling his $10,000 PS4 this message: (for LOLs)

Would you take $1,000,000 for the PS4?

I want to make sure all the people that want to pay 10 grand for it don't get it. I need this PS4. So, $1 million? Is it a deal? Please let me know. I'm sure this things value is only going to go up!

You don't get the 10% discount on ONLINE preorders.

In-store layaway preorders will get the 10% off.

Stopped by my local walmart and there are absolutely no marketing or promotional signage for ps4 or xbox one. What a shame. They better save my ps4 after midnight. I want a full day of rest on the 14th. Getting it early morning the 15th
