wut is ur guys' opinions on world of warcraft i was thinkin about gettin it but then i heard about the 15 bucks a month thing which is gay but i heard this game was good

think i should get it?

somewhere in the threads is a link to some prepaid cards to get you monthly rate a little cheaper

I kind of agree with redgopher as well, play eq2 instead :)

Hmmm... Kind of hard to tell if anyone is being sarcastic here, so I'll be serious.

Aside from possibly Guild Wars, WoW is the epitome of the MMORPG genre. It fixes nearly all of the major complaints people have had since the dawn of the style (except those inherent in the game mechanic itself), and as a result currently has over 1.5 million subscribers. Everquest 2, while following in the footsteps of one of the first MMORPGs, and doing so rather admirably, suffers from issues of flat and uninspired art direction. It does feature large improvements over EQ1, but on the whole didn't make many of the improvements to the genre that came about since EQ's first inception.

Either way, you would likely enjoy yourself, but myself and nearly one and a half million others will offer our humble opinion that WoW is really the way to go on this one.

WoW is a good game, and addictive. If you have even a slight interest in the other Warcraft games, or even no interest, there is something you will like.
What people who bitch about 15 bucks a month either fail to realize, or refuse to, is the 15 a month goes towards a lot of things. From bandwidth (it's not Road Runner after all) to server upkeep to game content. I hear alot of good things about Guild Wars, while it's free, it's just not the same. From what I understand, the "cities" are just lobbies where you find people to go into your own adventure, kinda like hosting a game of Quake. I could be wrong.

There is no getting around it, MMOs of that scale are going to cost money. They simply cannot keep things going, and still keep any kind of profit margin, by the initial box you buy. The profit is after all why they put the game out in the first place. This isn't the March of Dimes.

Oh, and as far as EQ 2. Someone on the EQ2 forums said it best I think. When they made EQ1, they created a world and formed a game within it. With EQ2, they sorta made a game, and then thought about a world....or something to that effect.
Just too many ideas thrown together IMHO.

I AM NOT AN MMORPG FAN, that aside, my friends play this game, and I have dub'd it W.o.G. you can probally figure out the abbreviation, but I was chillin over my friends crib a few months ago and he was in the middle of a side quest, so I sit down and go get something to drink from the store, 3 and a half hours later, he didn't finish the side quest cuz him and his party walked around in a circle in this dungeon for 3 and a frickin half hours, to say the least I was pist about that, but he bought me food for makin me wait after that so it's all good now, but I can't say THIS ENOUGH! DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME!

Yes its good, if not the best MMORPG out there.. Guild Wars is better but its not really a MMORPG more like MORPG(without Massive). EQ2? Stayy farrrr awwwaayyy..that POS will be free soon..

I was in the same boat as you, wanting to try out WOW but 15 bucks a month could be better spent for a college student like me for other things.

So I tried Guild Wars, and it has taken over my life.

Literally, the best game i've played in a LONG time. I easily find myself only getting about 2-3 hours of sleep per night because of this damn game.

WoW is a wonderful...it has made me pretty much drop playing my consoles since I got it. Like other posters have said, it takes alot of problems that other MMORPGs have and fixes them. Me and my friends have a blast playing it. It would also probably be an excellent MMORPG for a beginner to pick up.

I was a bit skeptical at first, tried it, and absolutely love it. And for those of you complainers about it costing $15 a month to play...after you buy the game it comes with one free month of play...quite enough time for you to decide whether or not it is worth the monthly fee. The game is popular enough that you could probably resell/trade a used WoW account as long as you provide the access codes with it.

IMHO the biggest problem with this game is that the developers underestimated how popular it would be, and most of the issues of this game have to do with server overload from so many people playing all the time. You get problems like lag, server crashes, wierd bugs, and sometimes it is impossible to get on the more crowded servers when they are full. My suggestion is to pick a server with a low population.

However, getting items for your ingame character isn't really a problem on the more crowded servers, because all the areas with the phat loot are instanced, so no competition for monster drops--a big problem with other MMORPGs that I cannot stand.

Ever since they upgraded their servers about 2 months ago, I haven't experienced this stuff at all anymore. I can get into high population servers without a line 95% of the time at peak hours (I play on Warsong, one of the biggest), and I believe that PvP lag people are experiencing is simply their comps choking.

I've done 40 vs 40 PvP large scale battles in Tarren Mill and have barely lagged.

The problems you listed were a big issue at launch, but they are largely fixed now.

I really like WOW, but I'm in college so I don't have time to play... after graduation I plan to go straight to level 60. I really think the 15 dollars a month is worth it, it will save you money in the long run because you won't need to buy other games. Unless you're like me and you buy them anyway and then they sit.

From your statement that "15 bucks a month is gay" I don't think you understand the economics or the logistics of creating and maintaining an MMORPG. They are completely different than other games, content is constantly added and the game is always changing. Just think if your favorite game was constantly adding new levels and things to do, would you pay for that? I think the cost is definitely justified in the experience and conent the game provides. The $15 will actually save you money over time, because you probably won't spend any money on other games, in fact you might not spend money on anything else since WOW will become your life. MMORPG's take your time, not your money.

That said, WOW is a lot of fun for me so far, can't wait for the new battlegrounds.

Also you sound young, you will need a parents credit card or to buy a game card to play.

There's a reason why Everquest 2 keeps going on "sale" for 14.99 at various retailers.

World of Warcraft has got the industry on lock down.

Yes, i will have to admit (at the risk of being flamed), that they are improving things serverwise. Months ago I couldn't even play on the weekends due to server problems, now that has largely changed. Whole servers that would entirely crash for a day or two after routine maintainence patches now rarely happen. Lag has been greatly reduced.

I find a majority of the people who have quit this game did so because of server instability problems in the early release of the game. However, they never seem to take into account that all MMORPGs have issues like this in their initial release...its the price you pay for being the first ones on a new game.

Also, alot of people are complaining about endgame content being nonexistant in WoW, comparing it with games like EQ, FFXI, and don't take into account that those games are years old, unlike WoW which is just starting out. It will get bigger!

Also, I've heard people complain because OMFG IT DOESNT HAVE CUTSCENES IN IT. So what? Every MMORPG I've played that has cutscenes in it, i've always been annoyed by people in my party messaging me during it, "are you done yet? hurry up! why are you standing there?" or random party member: "why can't we skip this stupid cutscene?" Cutscenes are overrated.

Also, I think Blizzard REALLY needs to change thier minimum/recommended settings for the game that is listed on the box. Everyone I've know that plays using these settings often cause other people to lag because their underpowered pc chokes. The specs need to listed higher...and 56K? WTF? Why is this even allowed? Is this a joke...i don't even see how this game is even possibly playable over dialup with out tremendous lag for the user.

well from the looks of it people do like to play this game and since they say the 15 bucks a month is worth it i guess ill try it and since i already play guild wars might as well try this one out

I cannot stand it anymore.

You are a fucking idiot.

I was wondering which game to get, WoW or Guild Wars. I think I'm gonna go with WoW. I want a true MMORPG, not a knock off like Guild Wars, no matter how good it is.

That's a REALLY bad way to look at Guild Wars. I don't really see how it's a knock-off and WoW isn't. It's not like WoW is the first MMORPG, and Guild Wars is a different kind of game. Don't knock what you really just don't understand.
wuts EQ2 i mean i play guild wars but wut the hell is EQ2?
For christ sake, it's only one more letter to spell it correctly. If you can take 20 or so seconds to put together a complex statement such as that, you can damn well add an "H" and use an "A" as well.

While you're at it, you can use our good friends Punctuation and Capitalization to add a little thing we like to call Respectability to your posts.
ohh thanks
Well, no offense but when you insult something or someone (in this case, WoW's $15 a month charge) by calling it "gay", it doesn't really make people think you're the brightest lightbulb in the box.

I just bought World of Warcraft, but I can't play it because I need to enter credit card information or a game card code? The first month is supposed to be free, why should I have to enter anything now? So I can't play it now because I'm gonna be buying game cards instead of using my credit card. Great, now I have to go back to Best Buy and buy a card. Thanks for my free month Blizzard.

It says credit card required on the box. What else do you want? Regardless of a free month, it say CREDIT CARD REQUIRED in big, bold letters, just like that. You went on a hunch that you didn't need a CC for your free month.

You don't need a credit card at all, you can use game cards, which is what I'm doing. I just figured that I could finish out my first month and then punch in a game card. I don't care now, I'll just buy one tomorrow. It was the initial wtf state I was in that made me pissed, I over reacted, sorry.

It's a method to make sure that they will be paid when they start collecting monthly fees. Like a credit check when you buy a house, or something, but on a much lower scale.

There's my main WoW character. I like it pretty well, it's about the least grindy MMORPG I've played, but it's still got it's annoying moments.
My only suggestion is to play on a PvE server. PvP servers are just a whole lot of hassle as you get killed and corpse camped by 3 people 30 levels higher than you when all you're trying to do is finish a quest.

If you're on a PvE server, you don't have to worry about that, plus you'll still be able to play the big PvP matches in the upcoming battlegrounds. Win-win all around. I just wish I knew that before I started on PvP... Urgh.

I plan on playing on the PvE server, I hate PvP. I've been against that since my Diablo 2 days, where assholes would come into your game 20 levels higher than you and kill your whole party. I like fighting monsters, unless its a straight up duel.

Edit - After playing this pretty much all day, a few breaks in between, this game ROCKS! Its friggin crack. I was hooked on DAOC for quite a while, now I'm hooked on this. I'm only level 8 and still in my starting region, but its awesome so far. Well, there goes my summer down the tubes.

I remember one particular time I was running my Necro through Diablo on Nitemare, and this jackass barb came in and went hostile on the whole group. The barb was high 70's, low 80's, and was slaughtering us all like cattle until I buried him in half a screen worth of bone prison, then proceeded to take him down with some bone spirit.

All said and done, I died like 5 times, lost over 4 million in gold, but DAMN the one time I took that bastard down (he left after dying, of course) was satisfying. So satisfying that here I am recounting it two years after the fact.

I do agree with you, though. PvP is often just a bunch of jackass PK'ers that betray lower levels for kicks. Not so much fun.
