Thinking of buying a DS - A Few Important Questions!

Hi all -

I'm just about to get a DS (95% probability), and I've got a few questions for those of you who already have them. I apologise in advance for the number of questions... maybe some would be better as different posts altogether? Ah, never mind. Here they are:

1. Didn't that fiddly stylus pointer pen thing put you off at first? It looks pretty fiddly to me and I'm wondering if you get used to it pretty quickly or if it ever seems to get in the way?

2. How do you feel about the dual screen? The dual screen is a pretty innovative concept, well - that is if you consider they were abolished in the 80s with Game And Watch style games. I'm not too sure that I would feel comfortable playing games on the dual screen as I've grown so used to looking at one screen while playing games. Does it make things awkward at all, or do you get used to it quickly?

3. If you own a PSP and a DS, which do you prefer and why? I've looked over at nintendods.com at the list of games and some look great, but plenty look questionable. I'm actually very surprised that Nintendo bothered creating Rayman DS for instance, since Rayman for the GBA was unquestionably the most boring game ever. It's horrible.

4. What are the best (your favorurite) games for the DS? I don't mean graphically stunning, so much as addictive and incredibly fun. My favourite games of all time (any platform) are Day of the Tentacle and Super Mario World. Are there any games like that on the DS?

I look forward to your replies!

1.No problems at all. I've had Palm OS products for years, so I've become adept at using it.
2.Love the concept. We still haven't seen the best of the DS, but the few games that have utilized it have been great experiences.
3.So far, gameswise I prefer my DS by a landslide. The PSP is a superior toy, but there is nothing that needs to be played with the sole exception of Lumines. Even then it is not a killer app or must play. And sadly there is little to come in the near future that is a must play. If I do touch my PSP, it is to clean that darn screen.
4.Feel the Magic, Wario Ware: Touched, Advance Wars DS, Nintendogs, Yoshi:T&G. I'm still getting to love Meteos, and I don't have Kirby yet. The fact that you can play your GBA games instantly adds literally another 25-50 mustplay games. Including your beloved Super Mario World.

Second'd. I rarely touch my PSP except to play Ridge Racer, but like lurknomore mentioned, there is no "killer app". Add nanostray and Zoo Keeper to the list of favorites for the DS.

1. A little at first, but within five minutes, you get used to it.
2. I like the concept of it. You can see more of the game and the touch screen is a good idea.
3. I don't own a PSP, so I can't help you here.
4. Kirby(Is a lot like what you described) , Nintendogs (great way to pass the time), Super Mario 64 (good port of the 64 game, now with great minigames) and Star Wars Episode III (I suggest a rental on the last game, as it's quite short. Unless you like to master a game, I would then suggest a purchase).

That's funny because Zoo Keeper is Bejeweled (a free online java game) with a different GUI.

Thanks for the replies so far. I just checked out a Kirby review and I am surprised to hear that the character control is done exclusively via the fiddly pointer pen! Does this leave marks over the screen, is there a risk of damaging the screen or is it fairly robust? Sounds like a very weird control mechanism.

I really need to go to a store and actually check out the DS for myself, first hand.

Also, you mentioned the Mario and Luigi game. Does this compare favbourably to games like SMW, or is it a different type of game altogether?

i personally say stay with the SP until the DS falls under 100. I got mine back in feb 2005 for around 127 (it was a sale). in the first 6 1/2 months the system was out a total of 30 mins tops. this last week its been out around 7-14 hours due to the fact i picked up Nintendogs (what i hate) and Advance wars

i will probally have it out more and more now since im picking up the new yu gi oh game this week and Lunar at the end of sept

in the end i will probally keep the DS and sell the SP. I really dont care how the DS plays Sp games but i got a gameboy player that i can play all my SP games on my cube. They need to bring out a DS player but doubt they will

werid they have a gameboy player out for SNES and Gamecube , wonder why they never did one for the N64

1. No problems at all. You get used to it very quickly.

2. While I wouldn't say that every game uses it to the full potential, some games do it pretty well. The best thing about it is playing 2-player games where your opponent is on the top screen, so you can see what they're doing. (I bought a second DS for my wife, 2-player Zoo Keeper is awesome.)

3. I have both and I tend to gravitate toward the DS more. There's no denying the sexiness of the PSP from a design standpoint, but the DS is just perfect for some great pick-up-and-play seesions, which is what a lot of people are looking for in a handheld. Also, the games on the PSP play pretty much like their console counterparts, which is fine - but the DS has a lot of games that play differently. The stylus games are fun, and Kirby proved that you can have a full-fledged platformer with nothing but stylus controls.

4. Kirby Canvas Curse, Zoo Keeper, Meteos, Feel the Magic, Wario Ware: Touched, Yoshi Touch'n'Go.

Why is that funny? Isn't a good game always a good game? Or do you not like Bejeweled? Or do you just not like the DS and must do everything you can to convince people that (you think) it sucks? Honestly, you contribute nothing to any DS discussion. Keep your partisan comments in the PSP forum.

And I care why? It's still fun.

Get the fuck out Sony Fanboy
Says the ngage fanboy

OP, the DS screen will get scratched, but if you're looking to keep it in pristine condition then...then you're weird.

But Meteos, Nintendogs, Kirby, and Pac N' Roll have been taking up my time a lot lately. It'll be a good purchase.

Ouendan and Jump! Superstars are the only reasons worth buying a DS for imo. That's actually the two games that made me buy a system a few weeks ago. I have Meteos, Kirby, and Feel the Magic as well, but they lost their luster pretty quickly. Depends on your tastes obviously, but I wouldn't buy a DS unless you plan on importing.

You know they make screen protectors right? I have the hori ones on both my PSP and DS and not a single scratch on either system.
