even being a DW fan I have to say:

Dynasty Warriors series in comparison to Samurai Warriors, they seem to make every XL game they can. Havn't tried Devil Kings but look pretty much like a DW clone.

Also Resident Evil 1, I did enjoy RE Remake for GC though, although RE 4 is still my favorite one in the series, RE 1 this had been done so many times now it coming to the DS...
Mega Man. Topic over.
Ditto. There are more sequels for MegaMan than there are days in the month.

Every platformer
Every fighter
Every RPG
Every FPS
Every shooter
Every sidescroller
Every racer
Every sports game

Truly, the only games that aren't rehashed are games like Guitar Hero or Katamari Damacy or Trauma Center or, hell, even DDR (though it is approaching rehash status).

That said, I'd still go out and play my flavor of the month platformer, fighter, rpg, fps, shooter, & sidescroller.

Um... Mario?

Mario Brothers
Mario Party
Mario Cart
Mario Baseball
Mario Golf
Mario Paint
Mario Tennis
Mario Does Dallas
etc
etc
etc

KOF 94-2002/3 as well ;). Although, I am a fan of both megaman and Kof. I just wish I had all the megamans, so I could make the mega mega man.

Word up.

Ooooh, bright pretty colors.
Ooooh, moogle save points and chokobo mini games.
Ooooh, an effeminately dressed evil is taking over the land, and only a small but brave group of questers can stop him.

OK - I gotta go pimp out my AGWS ;) ;)

Tony Hawk, Street Fighter and Mega Man are the ones that come to mind but there are a ton more if I actually thought about it for more than 5 seconds...

Mega Man by far. Not only that, but the only good one since X4 to me is when they rehashed the entire damn series from 1-8 again as a compilation. Granted it has some old school goodness on it, but c'mon... Capcom are franchise whores.

I almost wish that they'd make one last Mega Man game, end the extremely silly storyline, and have you fight every damned boss from every damned Mega Man from 1-8 and X-X8 in 2D. Then it may be long enough of a game to charge full MSRP for

I'd say Madden is another one though.. EA sports games seem to me to have minor improvements and a roster change. That's why I'm glad to see games like Blitz the League be successful. It shows that a game doesn't have to stick to the corporate pressure of licensing to make a fun sports game that everybody can get in to.

It's Megaman or Madden.

Madden gets sold twice a year under different names for all platforms. It has its own plug-n-play TV console system. It has been on almost every system ever. Soon, we will see compilations of Madden. I, for one, cannot wait to play Madden 2001 AND Madden 2002 on the same disc, with only crowd cheer animation differences being discernable.

Never fear, Megaman. You are only second banana to king bitch over there.

Hahahahahahaha!!!! Well said!

Now hold up. Just because Mario and friends are in a billion games doesn't mean they are all rehashes of the same thing. SMB 1, 2, 3, and SMW are all GENERALLY the same kind of platformer. Yoshi's Island is a different kind of platformer. Mario 64 is a completely different type of platformer, a 3d platformer, while Sunshine is a rehash of that. Mario Paint, Golf, Tennis, Party (bad example considering the seventh one is coming out), and Strikers are all completely different kinds of games.

Mario = almost overused Nintendo icon? Maybe.
Mario = rehash city? No.

Mario sure is used a lot... I love it though

1980s

Year 1981

* Donkey Kong (Arcade) - The first game to feature Mario, although at this point he is named Jumpman.

Year 1982

* Donkey Kong (Game & Watch) - The very first game with Mario, who was a carpenter trying to rescue his girlfriend from an evil ape.
* Donkey Kong Jr. (Arcade, Game & Watch) - Mario is the opponent in this one, and it is up to Donkey Kong Jr. to rescue his father.
* Donkey Kong 2 (Game & Watch)

Year 1983

* Mario's Cement Factory (Game & Watch)
* Mario's Bombs Away (Game & Watch)
* Mario Bros. (Arcade) - Introduced Luigi, it featured 2-player simultaneous play.

Year 1985

* Super Mario Bros. (Famicom/NES) - First scrolling platformer. 32 KB of program; 8 KB of graphics. According to the Guinness Book of World Records [1], SMB is the best-selling game of all time.
* Wrecking Crew (Famicom/NES) - Mario is the protagonist, but gameplay is unrelated to other Mario games. Many NES games featured Mario as a character, even though the game may not have fit the theme of the series.
* Golf (NES) - Mario's first foray into golf. He must have made some spare money in his blue collar jobs.

Year 1986

* Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (Famicom) - Released initially in Japan on the Famicom Disk System as Super Mario Bros. 2, this used a slightly modified version of the original SMB engine with much harder levels. The Lost Levels title was created when this game was brought to the U.S. in Super Mario All-Stars, without the 2. Nintendo did not believe that it would sell well in the US, as the game was voted "too hard" by 94% of a survey of 250 Americans, and the game wasn't seen in America until the SNES release.

* Super Mario Bros. Special - A flick-screen version of Super Mario Bros. with all new levels, which was released for the NEC PC88 series.
* Vs. Super Mario Bros. (Arcade) - A mixture of the original SMB and The Lost Levels that ran on the arcade VS Unisystem. Powerups and solution to mazes (e.g. 4-4) have been moved, and more enemies have been added thanks to new flicker-reduction programming, along with other bugfixes.
* All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros. (Famicom) - Japan only. A version of the original Super Mario Bros. game with graphics changed to feature radio personalities from a popular Japanese radio station.

Year 1988

* Super Mario Bros. 2 / Super Mario Bros. USA (NES) - Released at first in markets outside of Japan, this is a modified version of a Japanese game called Doki Doki Panic with some of the graphics replaced by Mario-themed graphics. This game tends to be overlooked by some Mario fans as being the runt; some of the characters introduced in this game have now become staples of the Mario world, including Bob-ombs, Snifits, Pokey the Cactus, Birdo (then called Ostro), and Shy Guys.
* Return of Mario Bros. - sequel to Mario Bros.; Japan only

Year 1989

* Super Mario Land (Game Boy) - Game Boy game with tiny graphics; gameplay quite similar to SMB1.

1990s

Year 1990

* Super Mario Bros. 3 (Famicom/NES) - Mario gains several new abilities, including the first appearance of his ability to fly. Also of note is that this is the best selling video game that was not bundled with a console. [2]

Year 1991

* Mario the Juggler (Game & Watch)

* Super Mario World (Super Famicom/SNES) - Mario's first Super NES game and Yoshi's first game
* Mario Teaches Typing (PC)
* NES Open Tournament Golf (NES)
* Mario & Yoshi (Game Boy)

* Yoshi (Gameboy, NES)
* Super Mario Kart (Super Famicom/SNES) - Go-kart racing.
* Mario Paint (SNES)
* Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (Game Boy) - Wario, one of Mario's rivals, is introduced.

* Mario Teaches Typing (PC) - educational game by Interplay

Year 1993

* Yoshi's Cookie (NES, Game Boy, SNES)
* Mario Is Missing! (SNES and NES) - Educational game, Luigi must restore artifacts to landmarks of famous cities around the world and defeat Bowser to save Mario. North America only
* Mario's Time Machine (SNES and NES) - Educational game, Mario must restore historical artifacts to their proper time and place (and in the NES version, save Yoshi). North America only
* Mario and Wario (Super Famicom) - Japan only
* Super Mario All-Stars (Super Famicom/SNES) (in Japan, Super Mario Collection) - collection of original SMB, SMB: The Lost Levels (SMB2 in Japan), SMB2 (SMUSA in Japan), and SMB3, with enhanced graphics and sound.
* Mario's Early Years! Fun with Letters (SNES) North America only
* Mario's Early Years! Fun with Numbers (SNES) North America only
* Mario's Early Years! Preschool Fun (SNES) North America only
* Yoshi's Safari (Super Famicom/SNES)

Year 1994

* Donkey Kong (Game Boy) - First Super Game Boy game with about 100 levels.
* Tetris & Dr. Mario (SNES)
* Super Mario All-Stars & World (Super Famicom/SNES) Only released bundled with Super NES consoles in 1994, this update to Super Mario All-Stars added a slightly enhanced version of Super Mario World to the cartridge.
how gta 3?
All GTA games after GTA3 have been rehashes of GTA3
GTA: Vice City
GTA: San Andreas
GTA: Liberty City Stories

and I won't even count the re-packaging of the GTA games like:
GTA: Double Pack
GTA: San Andreas Special Edition
GTA: The Trilogy

Yes, well said. There's a difference between overusing a property and selling the same game over and over.

Tony Hawk and SSX are series where I loved the first installments and then started to lose interest. I can appreciate the position that the publishers are in though. Even if they can't come up with a lot of new ideas for the franchise, business dictates that they release a new version because they make tons of money (and therefore help fund other projects). So it sucks that it happens, but I sort of understand why.

I think that's debatable. There will always be annual sports games, and they will rarely bring anything new aside from an updated roster and MAYBE a slight graphics upgrade. Other rehash genres at least give an effort towards improvement, innovation, or change. They fail many times, but at least they try. Sports games hardly change at all.

Damn, thats a grip of Street Fighters 2's alone.

How much can you really change in sports sims? Unless its blitz or NBA Jam you aren't going to see major changes in the game.

Mario is the most rehashed and pimped of any franchise in the world.

Donkey Kong spinoffs, Mario Party 1-7, Golf, Baseball and who knows how many other whored titles with Mario and friends in it Wario, Luigi etc.

My vote is on megaman. In a short peroid we got Mega MAn Zero 4 , Mega Men EXE 5, Mega Men EXE 5 DS port, Mega Men EXE 6, Mega Men X collection, Mega Man Dash 1 and 2, and now Mega Man and Mega Man X remake on PSP.

Until the game is 100% perfect, flawless, seamless, extremely realistic, and still fun, there is always room for change and improvement.
