If you have preordered an NDS Lite, please read.
«©NCSX» First, the good news. The Japanese version of the NDS Lite was released in Hong Kong yesterday in moderate quantities. We watched with bemusement as speculators and other second tier vendors sent solicitations overnight. Ten pieces here, five pieces there, and so on and so forth. The prices being quoted were laughable but we'll get to that.

Now, the bad news. Initial pricing per NDS Lite sits at an average of HK$2300. That's US$297.54 per unit. NCS took preorders at US$169.

We should just repost our "PSP pricing fireworks" from late 2004 here but our recommendation is to wait for better pricing since speculators can't control the market forever and additional supplies invariably reach market at normal prices. However, if you're willing to pay upwards of $300 to receive an NDS Lite this week, we can supply. We just don't recommend it.

Don't expect it to last long, but for this to be the case at all! Yikes!

ugh, that sucks for them. i imagine that has to do with inflation, currency exchange, china's messed up entertainment market and weird economy in general.

At least that's the nice thing about NCSX, they will use their updates to keep everyone aprised of the current goings-on involved. That and the fact that, if you really want to go for something, they will do whatever they can to oblige, even if they know you're getting screwed and tell you upfront that you are getting the raw end of a deal.

Limited supplies and speculators controlling the market...ouch. I really hope the prices come down in a few weeks at the latest for those people who were looking to import a DS Lite.
Save your money for US version DS LITE and you can buy 5-6 DS games ($150 Values) instead get ur DS lite now for $300 ;)
Yeah, really. Why pay so much more for something when you can get it cheaper if you wait a few months... besides, it's not like this is a new system brings some major new functionality with it.

um if you expect to buy anything on day one in HK it is going to cost a bit. It will drop to a more reasonable price after the Japanese lanuch.

I wrote to NCSX since I preordered with them for the Navy one. Here's what they had to say:
If the Japanese suppliers also decide to raise their prices, it is no problem to keep your position on our reservation list if you wish to wait for normal prices for the Navy Blue NDS Lite.

We would recommend that customers wait for normal prices since the higher prices cannot last for long.

More updates from NCSX:

Prices for the NDS Lite have dropped to US$236 ask in Hong Kong but even if we wanted some at that price, there's no supply available. As for Japan, there is NO SUPPLY at all from distributors at any price. It's a shameful situation but we'll update again once we have news tomorrow.
i don't get how the prices in hong kong can just fluctuate like that...
Oh no. I hope this doesn't affect my Lik-Sang order - but it probably will.
Lik-Sang bumped their prices from $169 to $199, but attempted goodwill by giving a $10 gift certificate (Lik-Sang Dollars?) along with your order. My favorite part of the email that they sent me was about demand for the DS Lite (emphasis mine):
Due to the huge shortage, any shop with Nintendo DS Lite systems in Japan can sell their complete stock within 23 milliseconds for a premium price. Most shops don't even have any systems. These very same shops in Japan also know that one quadrillion import gamers want their system at launch date (everyone does!), and that they can earn much more by taking a bit of risk and by shipping their units out of the country.
I'd never seen QUADRILLION used in a professional email before. I think my life will be complete if I see them use GAZILLION or GOOGLEPLEX in an email in the future.

They also said 23 milliseconds. Which is obviously an accurate time measurement for sales. Those Japanese sure love their superlatives.

You might want to point out in a reply that there aren't even a quadrillion humans on Earth.
