If Namco's Japanese web site is to be believed, yesterday marked the end of the road for the King of All Cosmos and Katamari Damacy.

As noted earlier this week, the official Katamari web site was counting down until its online closing on the 17th. Unfortunately, the site now tells us that "the team behind both the original game and its sequel, We Love Katamari, has dissolved, and that no sequels have been planned" (according to Gamasutra).

Not all is lost, however, as Professor Katamari (a likely reference to series creator Keita Takahashi) "is currently working on a new game design" with a new team where you unfortunately do not roll things up nor "get bigger." Me and My Katamari for the PSP would appear to be the final version of the game to appear at this point, though we hold out a faint hope that a fantastically rendered "clump of souls" will eventually find its way to next-generation consoles. Until then, catch you later, Prince.

It's best to leave a system while it is at its height of popularity, rather than drag it down.

I look forward to this team's next project!

QFT. The Katamai series is great, so let it go out with a bang instead of milking it to the point where it's old and stale.

Katamari was starting to get whored out, so I am kind of glad of this.

Although, this could just be another April Fool's joke...

I honestly don't think that's a bad thing... the first KD was fantastic but the second one was just good. I haven't played the PSP game nor do I have any interest to but from reviews, it just doesn't look like that's helping the series any.

Some times, you just need to move on.:)

I'm just glad the guy is moving on to new properties. Being an artist is hard when your stuff gets popular since people want you to continue with a style, and all you want to be is original.

After making a KD game for the PSP it's already been whored out. This is the exact same thing as a chick (e.g. Shannon Elizabeth) appearing nekked in a movie and then later on refusing to do it stating moral objections. They get no love from me.

This is sad news because of Pac n Roll for the DS.

I played that game briefly & the control scheme would have been perfect for Katamari. Instead Namco decided to make a Psp version :(

Side Note:
When they decided to release We Love Katamari for $30 instead of $20 like the original i knew the series was rolling down hill and would suck up everything in it's path including the developers.

Series should have ended with a bang. Where the Prince rolls up the King of all Cosmos and assumes his position in the universe.

whos to say he doesnt in the PSP version. but cmon, the King is just sooooooo cool with his tights and huge penis buldge.

How many times can you roll a ball before it gets boring? Just go outside and make some snowmen, save yourself the price of having to buy the games.

a.) Not everyone gets snow.
b.) You don't get the awesome soundtrack eminating from some unseen source.

It said the team disolved... that means they broke up.

They dissolved after the first game, so WLK's team was a bunch of people from all over Namco (the Ridge Racer team, Soul Calibur team, etc.).

I'm sort of glad about this news. I wouldn't want the series to continue any further without Takahashi at the helm. WLK Has a lot of replay value, as the fans keep asking for the Prince to do bigger or faster rolls and it's nice to hear of your work as big or fast and not slow or small.

I want Dynasty Warriors style exploitation!!

Maybe they could do Dyanasty Warriors:Katamari where you go around as Liu Bei rolling up peasant troops until you have a human ball big enough to roll over Cao Cao.

good for them for knowing when to stop. I hate it when series continue far longer than they should just to milk more money out of them. I could have seen that happening with this series. Honestly I though this was just going to be a one game series. The sequel was great, but I don't know what else they could do if they were to make a third.

Set it on a small island with animals asking the King to have their paradise rebuilt.

At much as I'd like to see the Katamari series in next-generation graphics, I do think it's time they move on. Like someone said above, the first game was unique and fantastic, but the second was just so-so (and the soundtrack not nearly as good). In the sequel it was far too easy to make a large katamari. The "rolling sessions" were severely shortened since you were basically rolling in a short string of tiny "themed" arenas.

Oh, thank god, I thought they were thrown in a vat of acid.

Speaking of which, there is one series they really should have axed a long time ago. Talk about stale and overused.

I'm on the bandwagon. 'Course I picked up in ep. 4 so...

Hell yes. "Let us roll as well."

This is surely for the best. I wouldn't want great games like the first two to be deluded by shoddy sequels. But it is sad to see them not continue.

I hope the make another for the PS3 later on into its life time. With it's power you could start rolling at the atomic level and get up to rolling up galaxies all on the same level!

I haven't played the sequel, but they should make you start with the giant ball of stuff and make you un-roll it so that everything ends back in its "correct" place.

Dane.
