Counter Strike Questions

I've heard alot about this game and now I finally want to try it out for myself and see what all the hipe(sp?) is about. Question is, what version should I start with, source? And what exactly is steam?

Thanks for any replies

Counter-Strike started off being a mod of HL. Naturally you can see how popular it is today.

In fact, CS didn't even have Steam until 1.6 I think. Of course Steam changed a lot of things. Basically, Steam is a program that acts like a lobby towards Valve's games: you can talk to friends, browse servers, choose which game you want to play, etc. However its most popular known service is the ability to digitally buy games through its service. You pay for the game, and that game gets added to your account (which is tied to your CDKEY), meaning you can download+play that game on any computer that you're signed in to.

As for CS, I've heard Source is harder to veterans because it's "different" from CS. I find both are great fun, and both are pretty cheap for such great games. You can probably get CS for $10 (buy Half-Life, it comes free with it), and Source bundled with HL2 (maybe $15, $20?).

Oh ok. I was thinking that's what steam was. So CS:S is an addon for Half Life? Meaning I need it in order to play source? I heard that source was the only addition of counter strike that didnt need HL2 to run it...but that's just what I heard. (not totally sure). Btw, thanks for the reply.

What is your computer spec such as CPU, RAM, and video card? It's not really fun to play CS: Source if your computer cannot handle it well.

Your computer would probably struggle trying to play Source. 1.6 is harder because better people play. Many newcomers went to CSS when they got HL2. CSS is a lot easier IMHO.

The thing about HL2 and CS:S is that the engine is flexible.. it'll play decently on almost anything

Yeah, I know my motherboard is lacking. I plan to get a new one soon. As well as up my ram to a gig. If the game has video settings, couldnt I just set them all to low?

My old PC, 2.?? ghz Pentium 4, 512 mb RAM and 64 mb Nvideo Geforce2 couldn't play it for shit. Although the GPU is hella old. I lagged so bad on it and couldn't do anything about it. I tried so much too.

Yeah, if anything I could just overclock my mobo for CS:S. I'm not really worried about it crapping out on me. I kinda want it to so I can go pick up a new one.

Well both of them are kind of like different games. Source is very odd in my opinion, but I've been playing from 1.3 to 1.6 so yeah. I like the plain old cs 1.6.

CSS is different because the hitboxes for the percent lag behind and such so when hitting a person you won't always hit them (or you'll get random headshots and such.

For Counter-Strike:Source you don't need HL2 to run it. But if you can find it bundled together for cheap then I would recommend to get both because they are both great games. Actually CS:S was the reason why I got into FPS and I still play it everyday. There are millions of maps, players and mods. Pick this up and you will be playing for awhile.

Just get the original for now. I've played the original for a few years and tried Source. I did not like it all. Just didn't have the same feel as CS.

Hm, well I just got the cracked version of source. And If I like it, i'll go out any buy it. I'll try 1.6 too, get a feel for both of the versions.

Link to me where I can't say I have something cracked

But what you did has no limit! For example, you have a 100 dollars, and your friend takes the 100 dollars, but you dont know, you are out of 100 and your friend wont be caught.

But if I had a couple billion dollars like a game company, I wouldnt realize that the $100 is missing. haha... Don't get me wrong though, I see your point. It's bad and shouldnt be done. But bad things happen, and this world isnt perfect. So why strive to make it?

That's possibly the worst rationalization that I've ever heard. If you were an artist, and your livelihood depended on selling your work, would you appreciate it if people were stealing it? Remember that even if a game company had "a couple billion dollars" (which most don't), that amount is not only spread among all of the people working hard at that company, but it is also used as capital for creating future projects (which is very important in light of rising game development costs).

Piracy costs the game industry millions annually, so it's not something to be dismissed as petty or negligible.
