Hey all!

I just picked up Ico and SotC yesterday. I know they're designed by the same team, and not necessarily connected to each other, but should I play one before the other? Or doesn't it matter at all?

Thanks!

Technically, they are in the same timeline. SotC takes place a few hundred/thousand years before Ico, iirc. I'd go with Ico first since SotC was kinda meant to be more of a prequal.

I just picked them both up as well. I decided to play Ico first since it came out 4 years earlier. Also I hear SOTC is better so I'm saving it for last :)

Congrats on picking up 2 quality titles. Play through Ico first and then enjoy the masterpiece that is Shadow of the Colossus.

I actually enjoyed Ico more. They are both two of the best games I have ever played though. Easily in my top 5. You should play Ico first just because it was released first.
is Ico that good? i've heard it mentioned a lot by people, but didn't really understand what the game is like.
Have you played Prince of Persia? Its like that, in terms of the puzzles, but the atmosphere is just better. Then there is the girl that you have to help along with you, which adds a different dynamic that POP's puzzles don't have.

even though they are both related, it dosn't really matter which order to play them. I say play Ico first though since you may feel undewhelmed after playing SotC. Just remember if you don't like Ico, it dosn't mean you won't like SotC.

Thanks guys! Just started ICO last night. The camera is a little bit frustrating, but not in a "this camera sucks" sort of way but in a "this is different than almost every game I've played" way.

I'm becoming frustrated with ICO. It seems like an alright game but I find myself getting pissed at the controls/camera a lot. Most of the time I know how to solve the puzzle, but actually getting the character to jump where I want him to is half the battle. I like more action orientated games so do you think I could still enjoy SOTC if i don't really like ICO?

Actually, I hate Shadow of the Colossus, but absolutely adore Ico. Maybe it's that whole horse riding aspect of SotC. The control just felt so clunky, and too much of the game was wasted riding that damn horse and doing nothing.

I didn't really enjoy ICO very much either. I still have it sitting on a shelf. I like "different" games but, at least for the first hour I thought it was pretty fricking boring and the layout was confusing.

Boring and confusing sound the death knell for me.

But, to be fair, I only played it for an hour. On peoples' recommendations I will probably try it again.

You really should play it longer, it will grow on you, maybe.

I was reallly surprised I didn't get into it.. I loved Prince of Persia (OG one) when it first came out. I don't mind puzzles. I just remember getting lost on the roof early in the game and getting tired of figuring each room out. And, I guess that's the premise.

SOTC is WAY better! Every battle you have is a boss. I was so bored with ICO. It is an amazing game, but it just doesn't have those exciting times like SOTC does. They are both true gems, but they are in no way linked to each other.

After playing both games I am disappointed. Ico is just plain boring while SOTC is an awesome idea, the camera angle kills the game for me. :(

Yeah, the camera gets a little shitty at times especially when you're trying to run away from a colossus to find a safe spot to regroup. I'm on the last colossus now and I think I've figured out how to finesse the camera but there were several times I nearly threw my controller through the wall because the camera was so janky I ended up getting ran over, stomped, or kicked to death.

I just can't do Ico. The camera kills it, and 2+ hours in, I'm just not having any fun with it. I'll be moving on to SotC tonight I guess.
random thought no one cares about but im gonna say it anyways: SOTC i think might be my all time favorite game
I'm very close to saying that also. I still haven't played God of War or Resident Evil 4(I know, I know) so I'm witholding judgement.

Same here. I thought it was everything that Zelda should be by now. But thats just my opinion.

The only bad thing about SOTC is i know its a game the technically wont age well at all. But on the other hand i've never played a game where i felt such a sense of accomplishment when i figured out how to take down a colossi and actually pulling it off. I also loved the aspect of the game being completely empty (no enemies) except for the collossi. It always felt like you went on this long journey looking for the next one.

i actually felt sad when my horse died... i was the same kind of feeling when a family pet would die. That alone proves to atleast me that the storytelling was amazing in order for me to care that much about the horse.

I recently played through (and loved) both. I can definitely understand why some people wouldn't enjoy these games, but in my opinion, they are works of art. I enjoyed ICO more than SotC, but that's because I like the platforming puzzles more than I like the action in those games.

Also, I played through Ico before I played SotC and I didn't have a "special marking" on my horse. What's this all about?

I felt the same way, until it was shown that the horse was okay.

Oh and:

Trakan cried at the ending

I really liked SotC but it was too damn short. Maybe I'm getting better at games or something but I ground through it in an afternoon without any real problems (except that turtle colossus. son of a bitch). I must say that Hard mode really made it interesting again because of the new rune locations.

The game won't age well at all but it was a hell of an idea. Here's to what team ICO can do next.

I didn't cry.

And:

You a dick.

Well, I spent about an hour with SotC last night and while I really didn't get anywhere (except dead a lot) I can tell I'll really enjoy it. The framerate issues are a little bothersome, but the camera is so much nicer than Ico, and I love the concept. :)

That girl can be a pain in the rear. But at least I know what I'm getting into with Ico, I hate games that just put someone I have to protect in my lap. I got stuck at some point and have to start playing again. Problem is that since I have found CAG 2 months ago I have purchased over 50 games.

Well, I've taken down 4 of the big guys and have been having a blast doing it. My gear is all packed for a move to Michigan right now, but hopefully I can get back to it soon.

I take it you haven't beat SotC?

I played through Ico last week after being bored about an hour in for a couple of years. It is one of my favorite games this generation. I still need to pick up SotC though.

I need to pick up ICO already. SotC is a beautiful game to play through, once. It's something that can only be really cherished the first time through because of the intensity of fighting the bosses the first time. A second time through you'll know what's going to happen so it won't be as exciting.

It was certainly the kind of adventure game (that was until I played the PoP series) that I had been waiting to play.

I really hope someone out there picks up on trying to make a truly seamless and expansive world like SotC. I really hope the PS3/360 can bring this type of experience to the table.

I just finished SotC tonight. Wow. What an amazing game.

Technically, it is pretty flawed. The frame rate is down right AWFUL in some places (oddly the ending seemed to be the worst spot?), but it is great. As was mentioned above, I'm not sure a second playthrough would be nearly as exciting, but I love the idea. Just when I thought the game was getting repetetive and rather predictable, they kept throwing in new things to figure out. Very much fun!

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I'm not sure how long I'll have my PS2 (might opt to sell what I've got in light of new gear coming out this fall/winter), but this is by far, in my opinion, the highlight of the PS2. Truly a great experience, hampered only by the frame rate issues.

Shadow of the Colossus is surprisingly good the second time around. Yeah, you don't spend as much time figuring out how to damage the boss, but it's still so damn fun to climb a colossus and stab it to death.
