When will the PS2 be producing its last games?

The PS2 still has a very long and healthy life IMO... I mean, a 80+ million installed base is a hard number to beat.

The PS2 came out at the end of 2000, and the 2005 line-up of EA sports games also came out on the PS1. It's safe to say we'll be getting new games for at least a couple more years.

Why in the hell was Madden 05 even released on the PS1?? I can't for the life of me figure out as reason why

Assuming the PS3 is backwards compatible as opposed to the "backwards compatibility" of the 360, I'm sure PS2 games will be made for a rather long time. The development costs are lower, the installed base is phenomenal, and people with a PS3 but not a PS2 could still play it.

So those with only a PS1 could play it. Also for those, like me, who travelled with a PS1/Screen combo.

I would be surprised if we didn't see new PS2 games coming out well after 2010.

I think the ps2 will stop producing games once the Ps3 60 gig reaches a reasonable price to the point the lower middle income family can afford(about $350 to $450 for the ps3 60 gig) Which i estimate to be around late 2008 or early 2009

Good games for the PS1 stopped showing up around the time the PS2 came out. However, the PS2 is capable of a lot more... Time will tell, but I'd say we have atleast 2 years of 'quality' games.

Also, there are the smaller studios to think about. Developing for the 360/PS3 will be an expensive venture. Smaller developers will probably stick with the PS2 to save money and keep developement times down.

ff origins and ff chronicles werent that good....originals are where its at, arc the lad was ok and the other 2 were good

When was the last PS1 game released? That + math should help you figure it out, assuming the PS3 does better than everyone's saying it will.

Listen. I don't really care as long as we're getting more hot shit from Japan ala Zombies vs. Ambulance and that maid with machine gun game. Great fun. Great fun.

Because it stood to make money. What other reason could there possibly be?

Don't forget, a lot of third world countries are producing their own PS1 games for their local markets because the PS1 is what people there can afford. The machine is far from dead on a global basis.

Most of those were localizations of Japanese games release well befor ethe PS2 launch. The FF nostalgia sets were put on PS1 because they contained nothing that would benefit from being native PS2 games and maximized their market reach.

Final Fantasy IX and Dragon Quest VII are better examples of major titles that had their Japanese release after the PS2 had launched. The PS2 was just a few months old and at that point served better to extend the reach of the PS1 than as a target for high games with lengthy development cycles.

FF for the PS3 has been announced but could be two years or more after the PS3 launch. Dragon Quest will likely see another PS2 entry before moving to another platform. That series has never been heavily tilted toward the latest tech.
