World Series of Poker: Tournament of Champions

Well, I was expecting (and hoping for) a poker game that played similar to the game World Poker Tour.

The DigiMask stuff (which was 80% of the reason for me purchasing it) was pretty impressive, at first -- more so because it is a feature that is brand new to the 360 arena. Once you start noticing its flaws, it's mystic begins to wash away.

When you view your face head-on, only then does it look pretty accurate -- from the side-view, and even 3/4 view, it looks very bad. I hope that this isn't an indication of what it will look like on other titles (primarily Rainbow Six: Vegas). You need the lighting to be pitch perfect, or else you'll get a dingy JPEG quality. Even then, there's still something about the feature that doesn't look too clean, which is highlighted by the fact that there are two separate models for DigiMask character models, and regular character models; where the DigiMask models look flat, lack expression and facial dimensions. When they sit at a table with regular character models, whose faces aren't merely pasted onto a head, the difference is quite an annoyance, as it is inconsistent -- and keep in mind, the regular character models don't even look good, as is. Very lifeless, rigid and scream "NOT NEXT-GEN". (But, hey; it's a poker game, right?)

When you compare a lifeless corpse (DigiMask) to a slightly lively lifeless corpse (regular character models), there's too large of a noticable difference, which just fuels the inconsistency of this title.

Also, there isn't much room to customize your character, clothes-wise, like in other titles. There are four or five shoes, shirts and pants to choose from -- all of which have around 5 or 6 COLORS (not styles) that you can choose from, that saturate the entire article of clothing. For instance, a shirt and tie both have to be one color, and it just looks like complete ass.

Now that the main reason to try this game is out of the way, now for the gameplay:

If you think the free Texas Hold 'em is slow as fuck, wait 'til you try this. Poker is fairly slow enough as is, but you have to sit through a couple of animations before a player can take their turn. What I mean is, a character will go through an animation while the player is thinking, and they're fairly long -- like shuffling their chips, rolling a chip between their knuckles, etc. Only after that animation is done will the computer or player's character actually make their move, even after it is selected, which involves another animation. This unneeded slowness will add up, and get insanely annoying very quickly.

The screen is very cluttered, and its hard to tell who is going, from time to time. It's a little hard to explain, but you'll get lost in all of the unnecessary on-screen jargan and strange camera angles, which often times don't highlight which player has a turn.

Another thing that is very annoying is that characters will sneeze... way too much. One to two characters will sneeze every hand. It sounded like a good dose of realism at the board of ideas... but the way it was OVERLY implemented back-fires, as I highly doubt each digital poker player at the table has a bout with allergy fits.

So, here it is:

Annoying; Slow; Sloppy; Bad Gameplay; Filthy Looking

World Poker Tour, for the Xbox, is a shining gem in comparison. (And it's a good game, too.)

TeamXbox gave this title an 8.1, which just blows my fucking mind.
And ......ummmmm.....Why not?
Because it's terrible.

Thanks cheapy. Now thats what ive been looking for since none of the top sites have taken their time to review it yet. Im still not sure, but the price is right for the game.

I am a little confused. I just purchased this last night, and it seems like you only played for a few minutes before making a judgement.

First off the parts I agree with:
-Digimask isn't that great but I didn't find it as bad as you say. The faces are a little lifeless but the technology still is kind of cool, and I thought my character was a decent representation of me.
-They do sneeze way way too much.

Other than that, why complain about the speed? You can turn pretty much every animation off so that the games fly by. I mean if you tweak the options just a little you can get the computer to fly through a hand in 3 seconds.

The screen is a little cluttered but after a few tournaments I found it pretty easy to understand.

A.I.- The A.I. in this game is decent, for the most part it plays well although it still does some of those inately computer A.I. moves (we are at the final table with 6 still left. I get three of a kind on the flop move all in and the computer calls all of his chips when all he had was a 6-5 non suited with three to a straight, of course he grabs the straight and wins).

Also the options for clothing and accessories are very limited. I was hoping for a lot more.

anyway enough rambling, I would give it a 7/10. Still worthy of a purchase if you are a poker fan.

No don't let this thread die. Someone needs to buy this title. The only people I have been able to play against online are the all-in monkey drones.

Must play against real players... argh.

I hate seeing all in with 9-2 offsuit when three others are all-in :)

Oh and another thing, why do so many people think it is original to flip off the camera? I mean is that the best you can think of?

First off, if anyone here has this game, feel free to add me to your friends list and invite me anytime.

Next, I gotta agree more with Ryan than Brak on this, but here are my thoughts:

- I think digimask is hit or miss...I've ran into some people online whose livecam feed looks EXACTLY like their digimask character, and some with really horrible results (probably due to lighting conditions). I agree that digimask isn't perfect and the customization options are very limited (especially compared to player creator), but I was able to make my guy look pretty much like me after some trial and error...I even got my family to do some extreme double takes and have some LOL moments by showing them my guy.

- While the digimask characters are lifeless and show no emotion, it actually "fits" with a poker-based title (aka comparable to having a "poker face").

- The sneezing is not a gamebreaker, but it is waaay overdone.

- I agree with Brak's complaint about the player animations getting in the way and slowing down the game. However, for some reason, this only happens in single player, as these same animations are interupted during online play. I don't know what the explanation could be, other than it slipped by during playtesting. While this "bug" does slow the game down, it can be remedied by speeding up the gameplay in the options menu (as Ryan has mentioned). Oddly, this "bug" does not exist in the PSP version.

- I don't see how the screen is cluttered...WSOP has actually changed their interface from the last version to the same "everyone on the left-hand side" gui that every other console poker game is using. Not confusing to me at all.

- To me, this game is absolutely gorgeous in HD.

- The ai in single player is the best I've run into in a console poker game. They seem to always know when to call or fold based on my betting patterns (which can only help me become better)...I found a very good mix of tight/loose players, and the pros play like pros (meaning, they always seem to take my money). IMO, the ai in games like WPT and Stacked played way too tight.

- I LOVE how you can set the time limit for online games.

- Seems like there are fewer jerks online in this one compared to the free texas holdem (but they are still there).

- Camera implementation is excellent, IMO, considering this is the first retail title to be compatible with it...I'm looking forward to more camera compatible titles in the future, and am very satisfied with my camera purchase in general.

Overall, I give it an 8/10 (9/10 if you love poker and have the camera).

Hi, and thanks for the (mostly) positive words about Digimask.
As many of you have discovered, the trick to getting the best likeness is decent lighting ... and try to get the right focus on the camera.
You only need to do it the once, so it's worth taking a bit of time to get the setup right. Please, please, please look at the instructions/guide the first time you use it.

The Digimask Heads are designed to be fully articulated and can pretty much emulate most facial expressions (and mouth movements for speech) that a normal human can... and there is also huge scope for 'deformation' (remember Jim Carrey in 'The Mask'?).
This is the first game to feature Digimask and we are delighted with what Left Field have achieved in what was a comparatively short space of time. We certainly expect to be seeing a lot more animation and articulation of the models in subsequent games, but that does require some development effort; and effort = time. Like any new technology there is a learning curve and so we hope you will see improvements along the way.

One of the ways we can do that is by monitoring forums like these and noting the comments. At the end of the day, it is you guys who are putting down the bucks for the games and so it's important to get your feedback... good and bad.

Sure, we are aware of the 'hair' issues and we are working with developers to try and improve those options. However, considering the head creation system is pretty much automatic and failry fast, we are pleased with what we are achieving at the moment.... Pleased, but not complacent! We are constantly working to improve the Digimask tech for the Xbox 360 and will listen to your constructive comments closely.

Thanks again for the feedback!

Happy gaming!

Then we can replicate your style perfectly!! ;)

Thanks for the kind welcome. :D

This is an excellent game. I've put many hours into it and am very impressed. It doesn't play slowly at all. You can sklip just about everything the computer does, but for some reason you can't skip your own player animations, which can be annoying. You can turn that off though, I believe.

I'm having a great time and learning a lot about playing good poker. I play too many hands in real life! The tools are great. Seeing how your hand ranks is verrry informative. Seeing your chance of hitting outs is also cool. For 30 bucks, if you have any interest in poker, definitely pick this game up!

i played one tournament (the tunica main event) and just went all in every hand and won the thing

could i be the best poker player ever?

Is the digimask supposed to take longer than the 1-3 minutes. I have been waiting for about 5-10 now.
