CAGiversary!
Just curious, would you recommend someone an Xbox 360 who had neither an HDTV nor the ability to play online?

Hell no. XBOX Live is a must. If you can't get XBL for its price, its price is wellworth the cost, just buy 1 less game a year or something. If broadband is a problem (dont you have rogers?) then you are out of luck.

Ya figured...I guess shooters get old fast without online, and with online they last the longest. Anyway my internet is "high speed" and I guess it would have to go through my router...

Oh how about an HDTV then? Online is definitely more possible than that...I dont see myself getting an HDTV too soon. Maybe in a year or so...

I have a 360 and don't play online, but I do play in HD. You can hook it up to a computer monitor and get HD though (which is what I do). HD makes a bigger graphical difference than Xbox to 360.

Obviously its preferred to play in HD, but I got by in standard till I got one. The main issue at the moment would be if you played dead rising. It sucked ass on standard due to the text. I honestly wouldn't bother without xbox live though.

I assume u have a cable modem? Id be willing to give you a 48 hour code to try out XBL, and u could just connect ur internet directly to the box.

HDTV is not a must by any strech of the imagination. Especially if you are playing on a SDTV smaller than 30 inches.

I would, I have live but honestly my game time is probably 3/4 solo (or with family on split screen) and 1/4 on Live.

I do game on HD, but have also on regular tv, the games were just as enjoyable.

Ok well at least HD isnt a must. When I notice graphics, usually I mainly notice how it looks overall, and I like cool looking water. I'm not quite as detailed/picky as some people, so that might make it less of a need then as well I guess. I'm not sure yet if I'm going to keep my 360, or open it. I got it for free so I'm deciding whether to sell it unopened or keep it. Thats why I posted a few threads in the past day trying to get more info.

For online, the main reason I'm not planning on setting it up is due to the initial cost. Doesnt it cost something like 100 dollars just to set everything up, then an extra 50-60 dollars for the live card?

But I absolutely love shooters online, can't get enough of them. Oh ya also, I wouldnt be able to use a headset either. Do you NEED a headset for live?

Oh ya and I also wouldn't be able to get many Mature rated games. But some games, like Lost Planet or Ghost Recon, look awesome to me. Lost Planet graphics...just look so sweet..., but I'm not sure if the videos I've seen on IGN.com are for an HDTV or a normal TV, so I'm not sure if my graphics would look that sharp... would they?

Uh what do you mean 100 to set it all up? Do you have broadband already? You don't need a headset, but its much much better to have one, communication in teamwork games is vital if you want to be great.

If you keep your eye on the gaming deals usually a deal will pop up for a year of xbox live. I got mine for 35ish over the summer from amazon.

Ya, I'd get a headset but with my family being all over the house and no real quiet spot to be, my parents wouldn't allow it probably. They don't know much about technology...and they wouldn't approve...

But by 100$ I mean that I thought there was some sort of thing you had to buy... uhh was it an adapter or something? I saw it in one of those "Compare PS3 and Xbox 360 prices" threads...

You mean a wireless adapter... you could get one of those, but you don't need one, you can plug your ethernet cable right into the back of the 360 if you want a wired connection.

As for the headset, one comes with the premium package (don't know about core).

No idea what adapter you're talking about heh. All i needed was a longer ethernet cable and I was good to go.

That's just for a wireless network. If you have a wired network you just need to plug a network cable in to the 360.

No. $100 is for the wireless adapter. The 360 comes with an ethernet cable and a month of Live Gold. Intial cost: $0.

Plus, you can get a Live year card for cheap through this site. A year ago, I got a card off a CAG for $25 than this year I ended up with a free year.

Well for me to play online I would need to set it up to a router wouldn't I? My router is in the basement, and I would be playing upstairs... and thats the only way I can get an internet connection. So how would I go about doing that? Oh I do have a cable plugin thing right by my TV...not sure how all this works, and uhh not sure what my internet provider allows. It was either one internet connection or two. Would a router count as a single connection? Then maybe I could plug in the ethernet cable to the ... er... something... cable outlet? Lol probably not =/

One question I'd still like answered though is if the graphics I see on my regular TV will be fairly close or equal to those shown on the IGN.com videos... if its gunna be alot worse, theres not really much point. On one hand I'd sooner have a Wii, but when I see games look as good as Lost Planet and as fun, I get kinda torn between the two lol.

live isnt a must in my opinion. i am probably just going to let the rest of my sub run out. i have barely used it. i gave it a try, but it didnt really stick.

sad thing is, i think i am getting a wireless headset for christmas.

what i use...~$20

what you are talking about...usually ~100

don't believe too much in the PS3 vs. Xbox 360 threads the = fanboy pricing

Ah wow 20 bucks ain't bad. I wish I would have capitalized on the deal where they had SC:DA and Xbox Live 1 year card for 60 bucks Canadian. Didnt have a 360 sitting beside me then though... but its really too bad.

If there is a computer near the 360 spot, take the internet from that.

Also, a cell hpone headset can be used inplace of the official headset. I REALLY recomment a headset if u want to paly GOW or ranked halo 2. Other games... its not needed so much.

Well, from readign your other topics, sounds like your game selection is limited...

Well usually I start off pretty casual in shooters, then slowly I get better and asked into a clan when I go to one of those "recruiting" servers...then I join and from there... ya. Without a headset I don't see any of this happening though. But anyway, me using a headset is highly unlikely. I'd probably end up just playing online for the odd deathmatch or ctf free for all or something. Thats still fun and it remains fun until you join a clan...at least for me. Cause I dont think there is any way of communicating to other players without a headset.

Ok I think I got this internet thing down now though, I'd just like to know yet if games like Lost Planet will look the same on my TV as the videos on IGN.com and whether or not you think I should keep the 360 even if I'll play very few Mature rated games.

As long as you will be able to play halo 3 and maybe 1 or 2 more M games, you will be fine.

Ok thanks for the help everyone, only question I got left is the graphics question: Whether graphics seen on videos, such as the Lost Planet videos on IGN.com, will be similar in quality on my normal, non-HD/progressive scan TV.

Well do you have progressive scan? Could you answer my question above if you just got a regular blah TV like me? XD
Well do you have progressive scan? Could you answer my question above if you just got a regular blah TV like me? XD
progressive scan wont look nearly as good as it would in HD, but it will still look good. And I think Xbox Live is a necessity, and a headset is a MUST.

Where is the free month o fLive Gold that comes with buying the Premium. I still haven't found the one that was supposed to come with my Xbox.
Ok well here's more what I'm asking. Will my normal, NOT progressive scan TV look, in terms of graphics, equivalent to or close to this video when I play the game:
Dont know how to post the vid directly, so watch anyone here basically (I think I watched the one titled "Ouch")
Assuming your not an IGN Insider, then those videos are pretty low resolution. So it should look about that good. What video connection are you using (composite, S-Video, or component)?

EDIT: Did you play the video fullscreen? It looks pretty bad to me.

No I had it in a little square...like I said I'm not too picky about graphics. Looked freaking awesome to me. But then again the best graphics I've played on are PS2/GC NOT Including the best graphically made games for those systems...so ya. Anyway I'd probably try to get the best cables for graphics...guess that would be component? I got the plugins for it I think. Unless for some reason I have to put the 360 downstairs, then I'll be using RF probably, maybe composite.

Edit: oh lawd, thread was tl;dr, so I missed that you already got the live thing sorted out.

I somewhat agree with online being a big part of the 360 (the original xbox too even). Though there are a few games that you can still enjoy alone or with spilt screen (asumming you SDTV is of fair size).

There also a few orginal Xbox BC games you could check. Nothing wrong with those if you never had the original before.
No I had it in a little square...like I said I'm not too picky about graphics. Looked freaking awesome to me.
Play the video full-screen it won't look nearly as good. I assume you'll be playing on a decent size TV and the bigger the picture gets (without upping the resolution) the worse it will look.

If you aren't that picky, you'll be absolutely fine with the graphics. In fact, you'll like them a lot.

I consider myself very picky, and I wasn't going to get a 360 because I thought I'd be pissed that I didn't have HD and that the graphics wouldn't look as good. But I got a 360 and I love it.

And I don't think you'll feel like you need an HDTV once you see it for yourself on your own TV. Just make the best of what you have, you'll like it.

Well the TV Is only 27 Inch I think... possibly even less, around a 20-23 or w/e if its downstairs. It will either be 27 inch and component cables or like 22 inch and RF adapter. Think it will look similar to the video still (In the small square resolution thing)? I guess online is a big part...and I can see why. As long as a headset isn't necessary I think I could get online for sure.

One thing about the basement is that I can hook up my internet directly with a cable whereas upstairs I'll probably need an adapter (I guess for around 30 Canadian I could get one)

Oh and I watched on 640 x 480 I think and it looked great to me...Actualkly maybe that was 320x180 lol

Ah watched it again...looks so awesome. I wonder how graphics can get better than this...I mean when PS2/GC came out I knew it could, but this I dont see how really. On one hand I want a Wii for the more Zelda/Mario games but on the other hand I want these graphics!

Woah woah woah.... you are trading a 360 for a wii? You canadians are all nintendo fanboys, so how is that gonna work?

Same here. Live is good, but not as important as the HD factor.

Crysis looks similar to Lost Planet graphically to me...uh...ya I'm really not picky I guess, I can't tell much diff. And, I wouldn't be a Nintendo Fanboy if I was torn between 2 consoles would I?

You can get into HD for pretty cheap since a lot of TVs are on sale right now during this time of the year. If you don't want to opt for a new TV you can always get a VGA cable and use your monitor, or just pick up a new LCD widescreen monitor at some places for under 200 dollars.

As for online play its not a must, but it would make your gaming expirence a lot better. Even if you don't get XBOX Live Gold, you still get Silver for free so you can still download the demos, videos, themes etc. I think you can still even talk to friends, but I am not 100% sure on that one

Well there is a possibility I could get a 22 inch Widescreen LCD monitor. I don't have any money...I'm in school...so ya my parents buy the TVs and stuff if they want it. We are getting a new computer, but I didn't want a Widescreen monitor because I heard that they make your eyes tired faster when reading than the normal square monitors. And...I have a lot of homework on the computer, probably an average of around 10-15 hours a week so... if thats true then I don't know if it would be good for me.
Where is the free month o fLive Gold that comes with buying the Premium. I still haven't found the one that was supposed to come with my Xbox.
It's built into the system. When you make a new Live account, through the 360, it will offer you the free 1 month. You can do this 3 times I believe.

No xbl and hdtv, no.
1 of them, yes.
Both, definatly.

If not xbl, theres lots of sp games that are fun and great in HD. If xbl, lots of game fun on it.

How bout this question, what new console would you recommend to someone without an HDTV, being able to play very few (but some) Mature rated games, and not a 100% chance of being able to play online with basically a 0% chance of using a headset?

From the PS3,Wii,360...
