Personally I avoid used hard drives, especially if the difference in price was only $13.

But now that you have it I say go ahead and use it.  Worse case scenario it fails some time down the road and you just replace and have to worry about re-dowloading everything, which isn't that big of a deal unless you have a bunch of timed PSN stuff that is unable to be redownloaded.

I've been replacing hard drives in my electronics for 20 years now and rarely have one fail.  I think the only ones that have truly failed on me have all been in my TiVo's and get a lot of use.

Good luck.

I would always buy a new drive. Too late now, but in the future I wouldn't do it again. No telling what it's been through.

I just bought it today and it hasn't shipped or charged me yet. After the advice you guys gave me I just cancelled it. I'll buy a new one just to be on the safe side.

What drive would you guys recommend or does it matter?

Yeah, for 3.5" drives I say the used risk is minimal, but for 2.5 it gets a bit higher. Go to Seagate.com and see if it's still under warranty, that might help you not worry so much. They don't care how or where you got it for RMA service, just that it's still under warranty.

You can also scan for bad sectors, if none show up and the drive sounds fine when running and being used, I wouldn't worry much at all then. You could also check the SMART values to make sure none were tripped.

EDIT:

For new drives it really doesn't matter much on a PS3. 7200 RPM can help but not that big of a deal. And a momentus XT (hybrid drives) only seem to help Skyrim, so if you play that a lot, might be worth considering. Not sure if it helped much with other games.

Just noticed a new one on Newegg was 59.99 for a 640 gig drive then after a promo code it was 49.99 total.

I went that route and its a new seagate drive.

Very nice. I recently upgraded to a 1tb for $80 and couldn't be happier. I haven't looked at how much space things are taking up since. :)

Highly recommend it. It's working perfectly for me. I've had it since Black Friday of last year.Something like 920gb or 930gb space once installed. I doubt I ever fill it and I have a PS+ subscription. SO MANY FREE GAMES. AHHH.

He isn't joking about the screws being easy to strip. Mine stripped and I even used the proper mini screw driver. had to go to the hardware store and pick up new screws for 25 cents each.

I think I paid around $70 on blackfriday for this hard drive.

Thanks for that vid!

A good tip for that tiny blue screw is to just use pliers and squeeze the entire screw and turn rather than using a screwdriver.
