Cosmic Star Heroine looks to follow in the footsteps of role-playing games of old -- 2D pixel art, turn-based combat, and leveling like nobody's business. Expect gameplay footage to come when Zeboyd launches its Kickstarter in the coming weeks.
"With each of our games, we've tried to improve the visuals so if you take a look at Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 4 (our most recent RPG) and imagine a game looking like that but better and with larger and more animated sprites (think Chrono Trigger), you'll have a good idea of what the game should look like," Boyd said. "Oh, and we are also planning on adding some Sega CD-style animated cutscenes for key story moments, although how many of those we'll be able to do will depend on how much funding we're able to raise."
Zeboyd is targeting a release date in the later half of 2014 for Cosmic Star Heroine. That will be well into the PS4's life cycle, and Boyd described that "next generation" as a promising one for indies like Zeboyd.
"After seeing critical and commercial success from indie games like Minecraft and Castle Crashers, it appears that all of the major platform owners have realized that the indie developer scene is a crucial part of the gaming ecosystem and so they are doing their utmost to make releasing games on their respective systems as easy as possible," Boyd said. "Combine that with the recent boom in popularity for crowdfunding over the past couple years, and it's never been a better time to be an indie developer." Greg is a host and producer at IGN.
