Destiny's New Keys Will Allow More Chances at Exotics

Those Keys Could Be Extremely Valuable

Late last week Bungie pushed update 1.2.0 live and with it a slew of new activities and rewards came including bounties from Petra in the tower, new Trials Passage Coins in the Crucible, and Ether Chests that have a chance to reward you with a key. Those keys have also brought up a lot of questions from the Destiny community. Will we be able to run the Prison of Elders more than once? Can we open the chest five times if we have five keys once we get to the treasure room? Why can't I get a key?

While we can't do much to help you acquire a key, we can shed a little bit more light on what they're used for. This April during a roundtable interview with Bungie's Chris Barrett and Matt Sammons we were told a little bit more information about these mysterious consumables. While we know that the Prison of Elders key drops for defeating a boss on any given difficulty are reset weekly, Bungie did say "If you have keys you can beat it and access the rewards in the chests. So there is no weekly lockout or anything on the chests." "You can always play through again if you have a key which you'll get from out in the world. From completing the story mission you'll get your first key. Also the small chests in the treasure room have a chance at dropping a key for the big chest."
As for the matchmade level 28 version of Prison they said "The matchmade version has it's own set of armor as well and that it has "its own set of Queens Wrath themed armor and weapons, a full set of that, and then the challenge versions, that's where you get the fallen themed gear."

While this doesn't offer crystal clarity as to what we can expect in the "Treasure Room" we can tell you from our experience that you will get a key after defeating a boss for the first time in the level 32 mission which will allow you to open the large chest. After that it sounds like you'll need to get lucky and obtain a key from the new Queen's bounty events taking place on the Moon, Venus, and Earth. As for what's in the larger chest? Well again all we can tell you is that during our level 32 play session each person we played with was treated to one exotic, one legendary Queens Wrath weapon, three strange coins, three motes of light, and one cosmetic item like a Warlocks Bond. The two smaller chests provided a mote of light, an armor core, and a strange coin. All of our other questions should be answered tomorrow when the House of Wolves DLC is unlocked at 10am PST.

Were you lucky enough to receive a key this weekend? Let us know about it in the comments below.
