PlayStation+3
The PlayStation 3 generally performs well each year as far as exclusives are concerned. Sony has great first party studios and second party partnerships, so while the PS3 may not always have huge numbers of exclusives, the quality is generally very high. 2010 was slightly different. While the system had a similar number to last year, the scores were a little lower. 2009 saw Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls, Buzz! Quiz World, Killzone 2, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time and Infamous all do really well. In 2010, however, only God of War III kicked up above 9.0. The great hope for the year was obviously Gran Turismo 5, which scored well, but didn't live up to the unbelievable expectations heaped upon it. PlayStation Move also disappointed, with not a single Move title scoring 8.0 or above, which is a fair reflection of the quality of the games to date. The PlayStation Network didn't come through with many exclusives either, although it did play host to the highest scoring PS3 game of 2010 – Joe Danger. Other than that though, PSN didn't really have any must-buy exclusives. 9.0 or Above God of War III (9.4 AU / 9.3 US / 9.4 UK)Heavy Rain (8.8 AU / 9.0 US / 9.0 UK)
ModNation Racers (9.0 US) 8.0 - 8.9 3D Dot Game Heroes (8.5 US)
Gran Turismo 5 (8.5 US)
The Sly Collection (8.5 US)
Yakuza 3 (8.5 US) Downloadable - 8.0 or Above Hoard (8.0 US)
Joe Danger (9.5 US)
Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse (8.0 US)
Soldner-X 2: Final Prototype (8.5 US)
Wii
Wii owners always have plenty of exclusives to choose from, but the flipside of that is that they miss out on HEAPS of games that come to both PS3 and 360. Still, in this category the Wii performed well in 2010. The game of the year for Wii – and highest scoring exclusive across all three platforms – was Super Mario Galaxy 2, with perfect 10s from the US and UK teams and a 9.7 from yours truly in Australia. Donkey Kong Country Returns, GoldenEye 007, Monster Hunter Tri and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom round the list out, while the Wii's dominance is a little bittersweet for gamers in Australia, as we're still waiting for Kirby's Epic Yarn (as is Europe), and Sakura Wars won't be coming out here at all. Even so, the Wii delivered considerably more top tier titles in 2010 than last year. In 2009 only New Super Mario Bros. and Little King's Story scored 9.0 or above. This year? Well, just take a look at the list. It's also good to see first person shooters and fighting games getting a little love, albeit with only a single standout title representing each. The strongest area for Wii was – unsurprisingly - platformers, with a side of action gaming. WiiWare also delivered a few solid titles – nothing too outstanding, with only 8.0s and 8.5s, but they round out the selection nonetheless. 9.0 or Above Donkey Kong Country Returns (9.0 US)GoldenEye 007 (9.0 US)
Kirby's Epic Yarn (9.0 US)
Monster Hunter Tri (9.5 AU / 8.8 US / 9.3 UK)

Xbox+360
2010 saw a marked improvement in the Xbox 360's exclusive fortunes when compared to the system's dismal array of exclusives in 2009. Last year the 360 only had four exclusive games that scored 8.0 or above, whereas in 2010 it played host to eight, which just pips the PS3's seven. More importantly, the games that scored over 9.0 scored significantly higher. Halo: Reach, Mass Effect 2 (a console exclusive in 2010) and Splinter Cell: Conviction are all triple A titles, and the scores reflected as much. That said, two of the 360's top three games were also available on PC, so while they're technically console exclusives, this definitely isn't an iconic 360 collection. Hell, Mass Effect 2 will even be on PS3 early next year. That said, at least Kinect made slightly more of an impact than Move. It may not have delivered much for core gamers, but it still had a couple of titles that made the list, so that's something, right? Right? The 360 also performed strongly in terms of downloadable gaming. A number of first-rate expansions were released this year, giving owners of Alan Wake, Left 4 Dead 2, Mass Effect 2 and Splinter Cell: Conviction more quality content. XBLA also had a good year, with a wide range of quality games, from brand new indie hits like Limbo, to classics reborn, such as Perfect Dark. A couple of high profile games also came to XBLA but not PSN or WiiWare, such as Plants vs. Zombies and Puzzle Quest 2. 9.0 or Above Halo: Reach (9.0 AU / 9.5 US / 10 UK)Mass Effect 2 (9.3 AU / 9.6 US / 9.2 UK)
Splinter Cell: Conviction (9.3 US / 9.2 UK) 8.0 - 8.9 Alan Wake (8.5 AU / 9.0 US / 8.0 UK)

The+Showdown
All three systems had some great exclusives this year, but if we had to choose one winner – and we do – this category goes to the Wii. This year the system really came through for core gamers, with games like Monster Hunter Tri and No More Heroes 2 leading the charge, backed ably by GoldenEye, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Sakura Wars, Red Steel 2, Metroid: Other M and Lost in Shadow. And on top of those titles you have the return of Donkey Kong Country and a second lesson in peerless platform game design in the form of Super Mario Galaxy 2. Bravo, Wii! WINNER: WII Head on over to the next page as we analyse which console had the best range of games. Now that we've looked at the exclusives for each platform (with the Wii scoring a narrow victory), it's time to get to the meat and potatoes of gaming in 2010 and take a look at a broad view of each system's releases for the year. It's time for the genre face-off. PART 2: DIVERSITY This is where we analyse a whole range of genres and list the top three games released for each during 2010. Each time a system earns a (beautiful) gold, (so-so) silver and (shameful) bronze place, we tally it up. More importantly, we also award an overall winner for each genre, and tally that up too. It's a lot of tallying, basically. It's worth noting that this isn't a perfect system. Genres are incredibly fluid things and – frankly - are less relevant than ever these days. (Which is why, for instance, IGN's Best of 2010 Awards broke away from genres to favour categories like "Best Story" and "Kinect Game That We Hated Least".) That said, we're using the antiquated genre system as a tool to take a broad look at each system's releases, and for that purpose it works well enough. Please also bear in mind that while we largely based the winners and their order on IGN's review scores, we factored in a little subjective opinion too, based on how we feel about the titles now. Oh, and don't forget that IGN's scoring system switched from a hundred point scale to a twenty point scale in July, so the games below represent a mix of the new and the old scoring systems. This year we've also decided to include downloadable games, as they're an increasingly important part of a system's catalogue, but we're not including straight retro re-releases, unless they've been significantly reworked. In other words, the Sly Collection and Monkey Island 2 SE are in, whereas Super Mario Kart on Virtual Console is out. Tally ho!
First-Person+Shooters
#1 Halo: Reach (9.0 AU / 9.5 US / 10 UK) – X360#2 Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (8.9 US / 9.0 UK) - PS3, X360
#3 BioShock 2 (9.1 AU / 9.1 US / 9.0 UK) - PS3, X360
The Verdict: This category is a long way from clear cut, with both PS3 and 360 delivering a number of outstanding FPS titles – so much so that Call of Duty: Black Ops didn't even make the top three. Even Wii was well-represented, with GoldenEye 007 (which gets a vote in the Licensed game category further down) and Red Steel 2 both providing solid first person action. In the end though, Halo: Reach is an Xbox 360 exclusive and the shooter of the year, so 360 gets the nod. |
Third-Person+Shooters
#1 Splinter Cell: Conviction (9.3 US / 9.2 UK) – X360#2 Alan Wake (8.5 AU / 9.0 US / 8.0 UK) – X360
#3 Vanquish (8.5 US) - PS3, X360
The Verdict: Three very different games represented here, and all three are available on Xbox 360. If you like looking over the shoulder of your protagonist as he cuddles men/fights tractors/smokes cigarettes, then 360 is your system. |
Third-Person+Action
#1 Bayonetta (9.5 US / 9.6 UK) – X360#2 God of War III (9.4 AU / 9.3 US / 9.4 UK) - PS3
#3 No More Heroes 2 (8.8 US) - Wii
The Verdict: This was a tricky one to call because for us Bayonetta was the third person action game of the year, yet its PS3 port left a lot to be desired. Sure, it's been patched up since release, but how can we give an award to a system that's still being lumped with inferior versions of games? Well, thankfully that's the exception rather than the rule these days, and there's no denying that Sony brings some pretty stellar exclusives to the table. We can't sniff at the God of War, in other words. All told, however, it's a tie. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and Dead Rising 2 round the 2010 range out. |
Open+World
#1 Red Dead Redemption (9.8 AU / 9.7 US / 9.8 UK) - PS3, X360#2 Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (8.0 Global) - PS3, X360
#3 Just Cause 2 (8.7 AU / 8.8 US / 8.4 UK) - PS3, X360
The Verdict: One thing's clear from this list: if you want open-world gaming, Wii should not be your platform of choice. Instead, our top three are all available on both PS3 and 360. Hence the tie. Each of these games brought distinct game mechanics and huge open worlds to players' fingertips. From rolling plains and one-horse towns, to dense crowds and crumbling ruins, through to tropical vistas and icy mountain tops, gamers were spoiled for choice this year. |
Action/Adventure
#1 Metroid: Other M (8.5) - Wii#2 Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (8.5 US) - PS3, X360
#3 Enslaved (8.0 US / 8.0 UK) - PS3, X360
The Verdict: Metroid's return may not have pleased everyone, but for our money it was a pretty cool take on the world (if not the character of Samus). On PS3 and 360 meanwhile, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light delivered a good mix of action and platforming, while Enslaved proved that Ninja Theory can deliver looks, story and gameplay. Outside the top three, Majin was a pleasant surprise on PS3 and 360, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands was solid on all three platforms and Yakuza 3 let PS3 owners discover what it's like kicking ass as an ex-Yakuza… while running an orphanage. Each system had plenty to offer here, so we're calling this category a three-way tie. |
Adventure
#1 Heavy Rain (8.8 AU / 9.0 US / 9.0 UK) - PS3#2 Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge SE (8.9 US) - PS3, X360
#3 Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse (8.0 US) - PS3
The Verdict: From interactive storytelling to old school point and click adventuring, in 2010 only one platform had it all and that was PS3. Monkey Island 2 proved as entertaining as ever, and with its great new coat of paint surely won over plenty of new fans, while the return of everyone's favourite anthropomorphic cat and rabbit detective duo was well worth a look too. The standout title, however, was Heavy Rain, with an involving story, a strong ensemble cast of well-drawn characters and a branching game structure that meant every playthrough was truly unique. Plus, who didn't love pressing X to "Jason"? |
Family
#1 Toy Story 3 (8.0 US) - PS3, X360#2 Kinect Sports (8.0 US) – X360
#3 Wii Party (7.0 US) - Wii
The Verdict: What are the games of 2010 that you'd recommend for young kids or would throw on when the family came over? For us Toy Story 3 was on the top of the pile. Simply put, it was an A grade slice of gaming for youngsters, with directed missions and a massive interactive sandbox mode, not to mention two player co-op. Outside of that, Xbox 360 had the ascendancy in 2010. While we thought Start the Party! for Move was a pretty decent family title, the Kinect range had a lot to offer, which is the main reason 360 gets the nod in this category. |
Licensed
#1 GoldenEye 007 (9.0 US) - Wii#2 Transformers: War for Cybertron (9.0 US) - PS3, X360
#3 LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 (8.5) - PS3, Wii, X360
The Verdict: This category is packed with games: some good, some average and many, many bad. It's too close to call a single winner, however. Sure, Wii had GoldenEye 007, but PS3 and 360 had War for Cybertron. Sure, Wii had Batman: The Brave and the Bold (which a few editors had a soft spot for this year), but PS3 and 360 had Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2. All three systems, meanwhile, had roughly equivalent versions of LEGO Harry Potter, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and The Force Unleashed II. |
RPG
#1 Mass Effect 2 (9.3 AU / 9.6 US / 9.2 UK) – X360#2 Monster Hunter Tri (9.5 AU / 8.8 US / 9.3 UK) - Wii
#3 Fallout: New Vegas (8.5 US / 9.0 UK) - PS3, X360
The Verdict: Looking back on 2010, Mass Effect 2 looms unbelievably large. The second part of BioWare's epic space opera was both a refinement and a big step forward, and set the bar high for all future RPGs. If they don't have intriguing characters and engaging dialogue, choices that matter, solid action and stunning visuals, well, we may not be that interested. Of course, there were plenty more RPGs in 2010. Monster Hunter Tri brought a meaty slab of adventuring to Wii, while New Vegas was a great new addition to the world of Fallout on PS3 and 360. In the end 360 had the strongest set of games. |
Action-RPG
#1 Darksiders (9.0 AU / 7.8 US / 8.9 UK) - PS3, X360#2 3D Dot Game Heroes (8.5 US) - PS3
#3 DeathSpank (8.5 US) - PS3, X360
The Verdict: Darksiders was a smart, modern take on the Zelda-style action RPG, mixing that series' structure and progression with striking visual design and a cool apocalyptic story. Pushing the PS3 ahead in this category, however, was 3D Dot Game Heroes, another game heavily inspired by Zelda, and one with its own unique visual style. This was a close category, but ultimately Fable III wasn't compelling enough to force a tie. |
Music
#1 Rock Band 3 (8.5 US) - PS3, Wii, X360#2 DJ Hero II (8.5 US / 9.0 UK) - PS3, Wii, X360
#3 Def Jam Rapstar (7.5 US) - PS3, Wii, X360
The Verdict: Music games continue to plod along, and Rock Band 3 and DJ Hero II were both stand-out titles in 2010. Def Jam Rapstar comes in at a respectable third, let down largely by its heavily censored content. Honestly, if you're going to make a karaoke rap game, you probably should accept that it's going to be a mature title. Ah well, all three games are on all three systems, so we're calling this one a tie. |
Sports
#1 NBA 2K11 (9.5 US) - PS3, X360#2 FIFA 11 (8.5 US / 9.5 UK) - PS3, X360
#3 NBA JAM (8.5/7.5 US) - PS3, Wii, X360
The Verdict: This category could obviously look completely different if you're not into basketball or soccer. This year's Tiger Woods could easily sit in the number three spot, for instance, with the Wii version leading the charge (scoring 9.0 to the PS3/360's 8.5), as could Pro Evolution Soccer 2011, which gave FIFA a run for its money this year. For us, though, NBA Jam was a blast on all three platforms, which is why we gave it the nod. All told, if you wanted to play sports in 2010, the PS3 and 360 were the systems to do it on. |
Arcade+Racing
#1 Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (9.0 US) - PS3, X360#2 ModNation Racers (9.0 US / 9.0 UK) - PS3
#3 Blur (7.0 US / 9.0 UK) - PS3, X360
The Verdict: Another close call, but ModNation Racers just pushes PS3 over the edge in this category. Hot Pursuit rocked it on both PS3 and 360, while Blur proved that there's room for a realistic-looking arcade racer with power-ups. At the end of the day, however, ModNation racers was a breath of fresh air with a stack of potential, and it was exclusive to PS3. |
Racing+Simulation
#1 Gran Turismo 5 (8.5 Global) - PS3#2 F1 2010 (8.5 UK) - PS3, X360
#3 Moto GP 09/10 (6.7 US) - PS3, X360
The Verdict: 2010 saw two stand-out titles in the simulation racing genre. Gran Turismo 5 arrived, packing a ridiculous amount of content, but not quite living up to expectations, while one of the former mainstays of simulation racing finally returned, in the form of the excellent F1 2010. Moto GP 09/10? Not so excellent, but there wasn't much else to choose from. PS3 takes this one out. |
Strategy
#1 Plants vs. Zombies (9.0 US) – X360#2 Supreme Commander 2 (8.3 US) – X360
#3 R.U.S.E. (8.0 US) - PS3, X360
The Verdict: PopCap continued its path to world domination in 2010, with Plants vs. Zombies leaving its PC birthplace to kick-ass on a variety of platforms. If you wanted to play it on console, however, there was only one choice – Xbox 360. Same goes for Supreme Commander 2, while bringing up the rear on both PS3 and 360 was R.U.S.E. 360 wins this one hands-down. |
Fighting
#1 Super Street Fighter IV (9.0 US) - PS3, X360#2 Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All Stars (9.0 US) - Wii
#3 BlazBlue: Continuum Shift (8.5 US) - PS3, X360
The Verdict: As much as we loved the insanity of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, PS3 and 360 get the nod in this category, with two stellar fighting games to choose from, both with stunning visual design and huge line-ups of fighters. If you want greased-up wrestlers and boy vigilantes who fight alongside their Real Doll, PS3 and 360 were the systems for you. |
2D+Platformer
#1 Donkey Kong Country Returns (9.0 US) - Wii#2 Kirby's Epic Yarn (9.0 US) - Wii
#3 Limbo (9.0 US) – X360
The Verdict: The Wii ran away with this category. While there are plenty of great 2D platformers on all three systems, it's pretty hard to beat Donkey Kong Country Returns and Kirby's Epic Yarn. Particularly if you follow them up with a Lost in Shadows/A Shadow's Tale chaser. We loved Limbo, but if you want a console for 2D platforming, Wii was it in 2010. |
3D+Platformer
#1 Super Mario Galaxy 2 (9.7 AU / 10 US / 10 UK) - Wii#2 Sonic Colors (8.5 US) - Wii
#3 Disney Epic Mickey (8.0 US / 8.0 UK) - Wii
The Verdict: Another runaway victory for Wii, winning unopposed in the 3D platformer space. While Sonic Colors and Disney Epic Mickey won't be for everyone, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is an incredible achievement, with more new ideas in each level than many games have in their entire duration. Shifts in play space, perspective, abilities and visual design keep the experience fresh, while the difficulty steadily ramps up, ensuring newcomers and veterans alike get something out of it. |
Puzzle
#1 Puzzle Quest 2 (9.0 US) – X360#2 The Misadventures of Mr. P.B. Winterbottom (8.3 US) – X360
#3 Chime (8.0 US) – X360
The Verdict: This category is a great example of genre fusion, with a puzzle RPG, a puzzle platformer and a puzzle music game. All three are fantastic, with Puzzle Quest 2 in particular offering up a ridiculous amount of game time for those looking for some serious match-3 questing. Xbox 360 wins hands-down in this category. |
Fitness+&+Dancing
#1 Dance Central (8.0 US) – X360#2 Just Dance 2 (8.0 Global) - Wii
#3 EA Sports Active 2 (8.0 US) - PS3, Wii
The Verdict: We've combined these two genres into one unholy beast, because, frankly, there were only two decent dancing games released this year and IGN only reviewed two decent fitness games. The Wii clinches this category over the 360 because Dance Central and Just Dance 2 are both solid dancing titles, but the imperfect Kinect implementation in the 360 version of EA Sports Active 2 puts the Wii version ahead. |
Old+School+Thrills
#1 Joe Danger (9.5 US) - PS3#2 Pac-Man Championship Edition DX (10 US) - PS3, X360
#3 Super Meat Boy (9.0 US) - X360
The Verdict: Okay, so we made this category up to shoehorn in a few games we simply couldn't overlook. But it kinda works, right? They're all modern versions of old school game designs to some extent. Enough justification. Joe Danger ruled, Pac-Man CE DX ruled, Super Meat Boy ruled. It's an even split among the systems, but Joe Danger pushes PlayStation 3 ahead. |

PART 3: QUALITY We've looked at exclusives and we've looked at the breadth of each system's 2010 line-up, but now it's time to get statistical on this feature's ass. Yes, it's time to analyse IGN's scores for each system across 2010. Once again we're only including games that scored 8.0 or above, and we're not including DLC or straight retro re-releases. Everything else is fair game, however, including PSN/WiiWare/XBLA titles.
Right from the start it's clear that the Wii simply didn't have the volume of quality releases that the PS3 and Xbox 360 did. In fact, the Xbox 360 had more than twice as many games that were given an 8.0 or higher rating from IGN in 2010. At this score level, however, it's a very close competition between PS3 and Xbox 360, with the PS3 weighing in with 63 games that scored 8.0 or over and the Xbox 360 a little ahead with 72.
Once we move to games that scored 8.5 or above in 2010, the PS3 has closed the gap. In fact, it's now the PS3 that's ahead, with 42 games that scored 8.5 or more, as compared to the Xbox 360's 40. The Wii, meanwhile, is still sitting at around half the number of games. Can the PS3 eke out a victory? Before we find out, it's worth comparing this year's tally to last year's score breakdown. The numbers are actually very similar. In 2009, IGN gave 48 PS3 games, 21 Wii games and 42 Xbox 360 games 8.5 or more.
The 9.0 or above category is really reflective of the must-buy titles released for each system in 2010, and looking at the numbers, something significant happens. Namely, the winner becomes instantly clear. The PS3 drops right off, with only 13 games, while the Xbox 360 regains its lead – and by a serious margin - with 19. The Wii, unsurprisingly, sits quite low at 8 games that scored 9.0 or above. Compared to last year, it's clear that the 360's definitive victory is more about the PS3 failing to convert good games into brilliant games than it is about the 360 having more triple A games than normal. In 2009, the 360 had 17 9.0 or higher games, which is pretty similar to this year's 19. The Wii actually improved on last year's performance, with 8, as compared to 6. It's a really sorry story for the PS3, however. In 2009, IGN gave 23 PS3 games 9.0 or higher. In 2010 it was only 13, which is a huge drop. This really highlights how important exclusives are to the PS3. When games like Gran Turismo 5 underperform critically, or the system has a slow year for first and second party titles, it's really reflected in the numbers. It also highlights the widening divide between PSN and XBLA – both services have good games, but XBLA has more. So then, the winner of Part 3 is clear. Nice one 360! QUALITY WINNER: X360
So now we come back to the ultimate question... which console won the battle of 2010? It should be pretty obvious (since there's a big image right below). With one win for the Wii, no victories for the PS3 and two triumphs for the 360, it's clear which system wins IGN's Console Showdown 2010… So that's how we saw 2010 as far as game releases are concerned. Do you agree? Let us know in the poll below and in the comments thread. In Your Opinion, Which Console Won 2010?Market Research
