We got to hear Sutherland's voice soon after, as Activision showed off footage of a two-player co-op game set in the Peleliu level. World at War will support four player co-op online and two-player splitscreen.
The level began with an American squad moving through a swamp, with Sutherland's voice recognizable as he's giving orders. They come across a crashed American fighter, still smoldering from being shot down. Investigating the pilot's fate, they discover his body is booby-trapped with a grenade, which explodes, sending a Marine hurling and triggering a Japanese ambush, with Imperial Japanese soldiers coming out of the foliage. It's intense.
Skipping ahead further into the level has the squad approaching an airfield and using flamethrowers to burn down the tall grass in which the Japanese soldiers are hiding. This shows off the environmental destruction in the game. It's basically going to be wise to torch everything that you can, including trees where snipers can hide.
The demo skipped again to the burned out guts of a building. The Marines exit and find themselves on the airfield itself, with tanks maneuvering and trading shots. This is a large set piece battle, so the Marines arm themselves with bazookas and take out Japanese tanks while supporting American tanks by killing infantry and using flamethrowers to burn out any Japanese in hiding.
Activision also said that the multiplayer modes will support both infantry-only battles as well as combined arms battles that have infantry and vehicles, mainly tanks. This isn't new, as developer Treyarch has made similar modes for earlier Call of Duty games. That's about all that's new with World at War. The game will ship later this year.
