An Action RPG with tons to do.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The first things you will notice about this game are the stellar anime-styled graphics and the beautiful music. Developed by Level-5, Ni No Kuni 2 is an action RPG with all the style and musical prowess of a Studio Ghibli animation film (especially since staffers from them worked on this game). A young boy king named Evan is in danger when a coup overthrows his kingdom. Meanwhile a mysterious man named Roland (who is a ruler himself) is magically transported to Evan's kingdom where he protects him and helps him escape. Evan, with the guidance and wisdom of Roland, sets out to create his own Kingdom where everyone will live "Happily Ever After" and restore peace and order to the land. The combat uses melee, magic and ranged attacks in an action format where you can switch between characters on the fly (and you will need it with certain enemies). After you progress through the tutorial levels, you eventually get to a world map where little Chibi designs of your characters will walk the plains and mountains and confront enemies - which then take you back to the action RPG battle segments. You meet some wonderful characters along the way and early on run into these little creatures called Higgledies. These cute little creatures will fight along side your characters in the action RPG battle segments - sometimes with cannon ranged attacks, fire attacks or even dark magic attacks. You can have multiple ones on the field with you and depending on their "moods" some will get along better with others which in turn will make them more powerful on the field with you. The world is expansive. In addition to the castle section, you have plains, mountains, forests and labyrinths. There are chests and items scattered through the map which give you incentive to check everywhere but do be careful as a powerful enemy could be lurking around which could easily kill you. Another thing that was interesting is that in addition to the world map encounters and RPG battles, you eventually enter into some Real Time Strategy-styled battles when attempting to clear the land for your kingdom. Here you have a certain number of warriors on the World Map and direct your army with ranged and melee attacks. There is a lot to do and accomplish in this game, as well as much food for thought. In addition to simply fighting to survive, you are gaining allies, liberating areas and creating your own kingdom. The fighting felt quick and satisfying but the deeper conditions of how to create a brand new kingdom from scratch really was an interesting premise. One thing of note is that there is a lot of dialog in this game and not all of it is voiced. There is some excellent voice work but many times, a cutscene would commence and then for some time there would be simply text to read. With the beautiful graphics and music as well as some of the situations, I wish they could have done a bit more voice work to flesh out the characters. The Premium Edition has a beautiful Steel Case and comes with a CD with (4) songs from the game. I wish there could have been more because this soundtrack is beautiful. There is also a Paper Craft Diorama that comes with it showing Evan in front of a crowd that you have to assemble for a 3-D effect. I would recommend just keeping this in its plastic as it was ridiculous to try and put together. Overall, if you are looking for a sweet story with some excellent action RPG segments but with tons to do, then I would recommend this game. Just be prepared for a lot of dialog and a lesson on how to create a world where "Everyone can Live Happily Ever After!" :)

Charming Game
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a very fun, light game that is good for relaxation. It's a nice game to play in between high energy games or after a stressful day. It's not very addicting, but it's definitely fun to play once in a while. The story is interesting, and it remains very simple throughout the game (which I found refreshing) Because there is so much to do in the game, you can spend a bunch of time playing and not advance the story at all. The story, music, world design, and characters are all reminiscent of a Studio Ghibli movie (such as, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke). The music especially is fantastic. The game is very easy, especially if you become over leveled, however most of the side content is decently challenging. The combat is actually really fun, and works well. There are a lot of side activities, in addition to the main quest. The most interesting part of the game for me is the kingdom building. The side quests tie into the kingdom building because all of they can lead to you gaining new citizens. Everything in the kingdom is upgradeable and gives you some advantage in game. I really enjoyed the game, and I recommend it if you want to play something that will brighten your day.

Not the Step Up I Wanted But Still Great
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game brings in so many new features to the previous game while also strangely removing the cool pokemon monster system from the last game. These new gameplay features or styles include an RTS game called skirmishes that are similar to Pikmin with controlling multiple armies with multiple units in them and It's also similar to Fire Emblem with a form of the weapon triangle. Also included is a My Kingdom mode that is closely tied to the whole theme of the game with building a brand new kingdom from the ground up in a sort of game similar to something like the recent Final Fantasy XV mobile game. These all form the identity that is Ni No Kuni 2 and whilst they all fit into the game quite nicely it's hard to not miss the monster system from the previous entry to fully feel like this game is a real full blown improvement. We do get multiple weapons and armors for each character, but the challenge wasn't there to make me care, at least when going down the main story anyway. For the more experienced, who really want a challenge look at the new Tainted Monsters. If you have played things like the Xenoblade games these are the unique monsters that are super tough and are much stronger and smarter than your average monster. Story-wise I feel the pacing could have been more fleshed out with some longer dungeons as it feels the whole time the game is giving you much more story than gameplay. One thing that bothered me the most is that there is this new feature where the characters talk while the game is going on kind of similar to the skit idea in the Tales Of series. The problem with these is that unlike Tales Of they are not voiced and appear just as quickly as they disappear which is a very strange design decision as I always felt like I was missing out because I wasn't living up to their unrealistic required speed to reading them, let alone while I'm playing. Of course, there are TONS of side quests that for the most part, all fit into the whole My Kingdom mode and RTS skirmishes that exceed the game's value. Take this game at your own pace and you are definitely sure to enjoy the charming world of Ni No Kuni 2.

Awesome Premium Edition
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I normally hesitate to buy premium editions because most aren't worth the extra money, but this is one of the few where I felt it was truly worth it. The steelbook is really nice and features vibrant artwork on both sides. The DLC weapons aren't necessary but give a nice bonus in the early fights of the game. The soundtrack included on the CD is nice to have, especially because this game has amazing music! Overall, definitely worth it, and a very fun and vibrant game.
