Definitive Version of a Classic
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. All there in the title, this is the definitive version of a classic JRPG. If you're familiar with the "Tales of" games, then you'll know what you're getting yourself into. They don't change the formula up much. If you aren't familiar, it's worth looking up a more in depth review. Suffice it to say that the graphics are gorgeous cel based characters, the story is typical fantasy-based save the world, and the combat is as complicated as you want it to be. A good choice, if you want a classic JRPG.

Good but the multiplayer design is lacking
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I enjoyed what I've played of this game so far. The problem is, my girlfriend did not. I've been desperately looking for something we can both play together, and this caught my eye for it's ability to have multiplayer. The problem is, it falls flat on it's face with absolutely no explanation on how it works. Granted we figured it out in a few minutes of online searching, but still, it should be more apparent. During battles, the camera follows just the primary character. If other characters fall out of frame... oh well. Even if it wasn't multiplayer, the camera should pan out and pan to include all players and NPCs in frame. She couldn't see her character, or what she was doing, meanwhile I was getting ganged up on, and eventually died, along with our interest in playing this in multiplayer mode. That being said, as a single player game, it holds quite a bit of my interest. It plays something similar to Ni No Kuni and Lightning Returns (FF13-3), leaning much close to Ni No Kuni minus the familiars(think pokemon) stuff. The story seems fun, and the battle system is relatively straight forward. For the price I paid I would highly recommend it for someone looking for a color RPG. I haven't run into the voice acting issue others have mentioned, but I can be pretty obvious to that stuff, as it matters little to me for games I'm not super vested in.

Good, but better elsewhere
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you're in love with having everything portable, then this is probably the version for you. But, if you're like me, and have a choice as to what version you can play- choose the other versions. The PS4 and PC are much better in terms of performance. The Switch version of this game is notably lacking in color depth as well as shading and texture quality, which is surprising because the game was originally on the Xbox 360. The game is locked to 30 FPS outside of combat, and 60 FPS in combat. And this is noticeable. Bouncing between 60 and 30 FPS is jarring and creates an uncomfortable experience when going through dungeons where there's a battle every other second. The game itself is classic Tales. This is probably one of the few Tales games that I highly recommend as the story, characters, and combat are all top notch. As all Tales games, the characters do fall into their classic tropes, but I feel like with this it's at least obfuscated by the interesting story and decent (if not awesome) voice acting. The characters feel alive and the world feels lived in. Overall, Tales of Vesperia was deserving of this re-release as not many people got to play the original on the Xbox 360. Still, do yourself a favor and play it on the PS4 or PC where it will maintain 60fps and look gorgeous while doing it.

Fun game
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game is very similar to all the other Tales games. Fun combat and nice to have it on the Switch so I have another game to play on that besides Zelda. Can be a bit slow in developing but there is alot to do to keep you playing the game for hours.

Not as good of a port as it should be
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Tales of Vesperia is one of my favorite games, almost strictly for its game play and art style. The story and music are a bit lackluster, but the 9 different characters this game offers, each with a unique play style, more than make up for them. If you want a really fun (single player or co-op) action JRPG, this is it. However, this port is not as good as it should be, despite what others may tell you. The most glaring problem is that, despite Namco claiming the Switch version would run 30 fps outside of battle and 60 fps inside of battle, outside of battle instead runs at an unlocked frame rate. This means that in towns, dungeons, and on the world map, the fps will constantly rise and drop, making for a very jittery experience. Also, consistent 60 fps in battle is not a thing. It is certainly smoother than field areas, but if Rita (the spell caster in the game) casts even a mildly flashy spell, expect drops. Also, if you do what is called an Encounter Link (which is running into 2 enemies on the field at once, making for around 6-10 enemies in the actual battle), expect constant frame drops to around 50 fps. People all over claim the battles are a constant 60 fps, and unfortunately that is just not true. The PS3 version ran far better in this regard. And while that was at a lower resolution than this port (PS3: 1280x576 vs Switch Handheld: 1280x720), it is mind boggling that a constant 60 fps cannot be maintained in battle. The unique issue with this Switch port is the washed out color palette. For some reason, the colors are nowhere near as vibrant as they should be. The PS4 version shares some of the same frame rate issues, though they are not as severe, but it certainly does not have washed out colors. For a game that thrives on its art style, this is a huge disappointment. I really can't recommend this port. It feels like a poorly optimized rush job by Namco. As my base PS4 also has mind boggling frame drops, I really could only recommend trying out the PS4 Pro, Xbox One X, or PC versions, though I haven't played those ones so I can't vouch for their performance.

Great JRPG on Switch
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The graphics look great, looks like you're playing a cell shaded anime. The battles are fun and up to 4 players. Story is interesting, I'm 5 hours in. Totally would buy again, this is a really good rpg. 9/10!

Not as good as I remember...
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this since it was on sale and I thought I might want to replay through it since I could carry it around and be portable. Graphics on the game aren't as good as the original and for sure not not as close to the PC version. The grind is real for this, but if you're playing a JRPG, then you probably like the grind. Personally, I put a few hours into it and didn't want to continue. If it's your first time playing through it, it's a pretty good game but it wasn't worth replaying through for me even on the go.
