I promised myself (and everyone else) I wouldn't say anything else about this, but here goes: yes. Contrary to Idiot's comments, Portal actually relies quite a bit not just on being able to figure out what you're supposed to do, which isn't always easy, but also on timing jumps and sometimes precisely positioning your endpoints in a short period of time. This is the very definition of relying on luck and reflexes.
Test chamber 15 comes to mind. The first time I played Portal I knew exactly what to do but it seemed like it took forever to place the portals exactly right to fling myself threw the forcefield. There were more than a few moments in Portal where I knew exactly what to do but I got frustrated trying to place the portals correctly/doing some platforming bits or whatever. Again, I enjoyed Portal (contrary to what some people have said, I liked Portal 2 considerably more; there was a lot more variety w/puzzles and stuff introduced, and I really enjoyed the Wheatley character), however, lists like this one: http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/02/16/the-100-best-pc-games-of-all-time/10/, which name it one of the top PC games ever, go a bit far in my opinion. I've seen some lists proclaim it the top PC game of all time. It's a really good game overall. And a great puzzle game. I think the love it gets is a bit too much, though.

Edit: The Portal 2 multiplayer is absoultely fantastic, though. I played it with a roommate in college one night while drinking (heavily). One of the most entertaining multiplayer modes I've ever encountered...some crazy puzzles that got frustrating, but which made for some entertaining moments, and the shared elation at solving particularly tough puzzles was great.

Wait, requiring reflexes and timing shots is the "definition of relying on luck?" By that logic what games don't rely on luck? You're right that it requires reflexes at times.

Hilarious review about Free to Play: http://steamcommunity.com//id/bradypus/recommended/245550/

Soo, these guys play games and get
-money
-fame
-girls

let me tell you, I played Ultima Online for 8 years as much as they played the same dumb Warcraft 3 map and I've achieved the following things:
-fat ♥♥♥
-broken eyesight
-carpal tunnel syndrome
-24/7 'Stones' melody tinnitus
-lost most friends
-ate only cat food for 5 months
-even my body pillow broke up with me
-can't resist the urge to shout 'bank guards recsu recdu' at the bank every single time

if there is a god he should fix this grave injustice, thx

the movie is pretty OK! I guess
but I will continue to treat Dota like I treat girls: hover-hands

Well, if you don't have good reflexes then you're stuck with shooting randomly and hoping you shoot in the right position, which would be luck.

My problem where I had to get "lucky" was with a few of the more advanced energy pellet puzzles. If you didn't have very good visual-spatial skills you kind of had to guess where to place cubes/portals to get pellets to go where you wanted them to. That was rare for me to have a real problem with it though.

I have no real desire to get into a semantics debate here. This is language I took from Idiot's detailed rebuttal of my criticisms of Portal:

Portal is beautiful and unique. It uses your brain instead of luck and reflexes like many games today,

I promised myself (and everyone else) I wouldn't say anything else about this
That's okay, no one believed you anyway.

Yeah, not buying this one either.

Heh, good old UO. I remember running around yelling 'GUARDS!!' 'GUARDS!!' 'GUARDS!!' just because while in town or at a Moongate. Sometimes it'd catch someone hidden doing something nefarious without me even trying. It was like an insurance policy.

I'm sure I'll get more FUs than anything out of telling you all this but I don't care...  I'm in a really good mood!

I woke up to a Google Fiber flying on my front door last night...   Looks like i might be able to tell Time Warner Cable (and Charter) to go fuck themselves. :D

Gabe cancelled Half Life 3 after reading this post.
He was looking for an excuse. Besides if he actually reads these posts, I'm sure the cheeseburger ones got HL3 cancelled long before the Portal smacktalk.

Eh, I don't know what a Google Fiber is (assuming it's not related to my morning Metamucil), but any reason to tell TW to piss off sounds grand to me.

A couple days ago I finished Bioshock Infinite. The world is beautiful, I stayed several minutes just looking and hearing everything at the beginning. The story is great, really catched me. The gameplay is... A bit repetitive.

The "aerial maneuvers" wasn't great, the game would be the same without it IMHO.

The use of "powers" (can't even remember the name) was better implemented in the previous Bioshocks (plasmids), I felt like I could finish the entire game with just one power (the electric one, using the traps). The effects were great, I love seeing the crows and the fire ones... But they felt more like gimmicks, really underpowered.

Weapons: once you get the handcannon, you are served.

All that said, BS:I IS an awesome game, a beautiful adventure... can't wait for the season pass to be on sale.

I had to Bing that. According to Bing it is just Google's version of fios. Hopefully it is good. My experience is that all cable and internet companies can go fuck themselves, but refuse to and fuck you instead at some point. Congrats on your new fuck buddy.

Portal does use platforming mechanics, yes. Luck would not be the word to use to describe what is needed, however. More good planning with a bit of reflexes. As far as 1st-person platforming goes, it's about as tight and usable as platforming controls get.

I'm not sure I'd call it the top game of all time, but I'd consider it in the discussion, without a doubt. I'd have to consider both Portal 1 and Portal 2 in the discussion, really.

Not even the best character in his game.

Heroine's Quest is now free on Steam. Not free to play with microtransations, just free and it has achievements. It looks like an adventure/RPG hybrid similar to the Quest for Glory series.

This should not be confused with Heroin Quest, the Police Quest spinoff where you play from the other side of the law that Sierra canceled in 1994.

edit: Unlike other free games, this one seems to have registered to my account and is in my library without being installed.

"What is Google fiber?"

*BING!* Google fiber is this pretty dumb thing that Google is doing which is just a total rip-off of FIOS so it's not even a big deal. Really, everything Google does is pretty gay anyway and you shouldn't even worry about it because it's not even cool like SkyDrive. Or Titanfall. Have you heard about Titanfall? Because that totally kicks ass. While your dork friends are all talking about Google fiber like losers, you should totally buy a copy of Titanfall.

I got upgraded to what's advertised as fiber this week, the installer man said it's actually fiber at the street and then DSL to my house. And then the next day they have reduced me back to my old download speed, half of what i'm paying for now. I have to call up and ask what the hell they're doing. Avoid Bell at all costs.

The biggest problem with having over 1,400 games in my steam library? 85% of the time when there's a code drop, I already own the game.

Brief price error for the game + season pass in the BR store. Would have taken advantage of that if I didn't already havei t.

all the men of wars are on sale actually, not just assault squad.

everyone and their grandparents probably have most of em already through past bundles though

Portal is one of the most overrated series in gaming.
So is someone's value of his own opinion. ;)

Anyone else playing Hearthstone?

Hiya Jake! There are 2 Men of War games that have DLC: Vietnam and Assault Squad. Those DLC's are 75% off as well, so if anyone doesn't have the DLC, now's the time.

This is pretty normal. The trunk lines are the ones that do all of the heavy lifting and need to support large amounts of bandwidth for a ton of people. The lines from the trunk to your house don't need to be these super lines or anything, just enough to support your house. Category 5E wire supports 1 Gigabit speeds so long as the network equipment (Router/Switch/Whatever) support gigabit speeds.

Yes they are will dicking you over in some other fashion, but that's not what's causing it. They like to oversell how much data a trunk can push and underdeliver what they should be giving because of it.

It looks like GMG has a better deal for Payday 2 - $7.91(74% off) with voucher code PLOCVS-G2T5YX-DATY6M.

Note: The game is $9.89, minimum amount to use the voucher is $10.

$0.11 short of being able to use the voucher.

Edit: I foresee my GMG shopping taking a massive hit if they continue with these limitations.
One way to get around this is to buy 2 copies if you can find someone who wants a copy but this $10 limitation is really a hassle.

I played MoW: Vietnam for my "A-Z Backlog" thing and it was probably the least satisfying gaming experience I've had in the past year.

Payday 2 was a pretty fun game when it released. It had some glitches and stuff, but it was fun to figure out all the heists and run around shooting cops with your friends. Over time, the devs have been tweaking and tweaking, and it has become clear that they are trying to make a game that I have no interest in.

I highly recommend taking it for a spin while it is free this weekend. Gather some friends, shoot some cops, steal some money. I do not recommend a purchase. Also, all the DLC is crap, so it is good that it isn't discounted.

And wow, I have 253 hours played...
