I've never understood the whole DLC fixation. I'd say 90% of the games I played in the last few years that had DLC I found to be underwhelming and not worth even the paltriest of dollar amounts. Rather just spend that money on another game. Maybe ten years ago (or more) when most people only got a game every two months and played it to death... sure I can understand that. However, when most of us are buying multiple games a month for dirt cheap I simply don't have the time to 100% all of it... nor would I find that entertaining versus starting up a new game of the two dozen in the backlog.

We want EVERYTHING for one specific game - especially if it's something we love. It's about owning a game + all of its parts - whether they're necessary or not. The Completionist and Game-Hoarder resides inside of us!

In the old days, we really only had to worry about a base game + maybe a possible ONE or TWO BIG expansions. Getting an entire game, piece-by-piece was no big deal - b/c it was easy to get it all, since there weren't many too many moving pieces to buy. You'd buy base game + buy the expansions and be done with it. Or, later on - buy an Complete Edition re-release w/ everything.

Then, something changed - Microtransation City, here we come! People bought into it. The Sims series came and put out 666 expansions per each major iteration + had also 333 Stuff Packs; NWN also decided to have Premium Mods (DLC); Oblivion had DLC like Horse Armor + other better and meatier DLC's (like KOTN); SR:TT decided to have copious amounts of DLC's; CoD series took the world by storm and later released Map Packs for MP DLC's. Sure, that ain't everything w/ DLC-Mania...but DLC became a big freaking deal. Sometimes, the way companies do business w/ us consumers - trying to Collect all of the DLC's can either be a royal pain in the ass and/or quite expensive.

I think the thing is - I don't like keys going to waste.

I don't wanna buy base-game; then have to buy Complete Edition just to get ALL the DLC - but then ALSO since it contains base-game I already own, a base-game key ends-up WASTED.

It's not like if I buy base-game and later buy Complete Edition - then I get a copy of the base-game in my Steam Gifts inventory. No - it just goes to BLOODY WASTE. I'd rather be able to gift, trade, or do anything I want w/ extra copies.

Only rarely on Steam do you buy a base-game; and then later if you re-buy Complete Edition, you wind-up w/ an extra key for the base-game. Orange Box did this, if you already owned some of the HL2 games in the box.
I do understand that part. It basically comes down to cost vs efficiency. I think the best approach is to pick up the base game (or even deluxe edition) at a price that one feels worth paying. Then later picking up story/mission DLCs or a Season Pass when they're on sale, if you did like the game enough to stretch out further. However, if that takes too long for a decent sale price to hit on a game I can see how holding out for a GOTY edition makes sense in the end.

The aspect I don't understand is feeling the need to own the complete edition of most games, especially the junky DLC. I suppose my inner completionist and OCD doesn't run as strong as others do. It's not like games get a gold star next to them for random people to see once you own all game content. Plus backlogs... they're infinite at this rate of consumption. Who's got the time to play them all?

People see DLC as greed but it's part of how they keep costs down.  Games have been at an (adjusted for inflation) $50 price tag since the early 90's despite people demanding better graphics, bigger features and the rest of it.  So you keep that price tag and then release DLC to make up the extra profits off that.

I guess since I'm not a completionist, it doesn't bother me much.  If I'm liking the base game and a particular DLC looks fun or adds to the overall gameplay like new missions, I'll usually get it.  Cosmetic DLC, new guns, different cars, etc -- no interest.  Maybe if Steam glitches and puts them all at 96% off but I sleep fine at night knowing that I still don't own that bright pink hovertank or laser shotgun.  Same with multiplayer DLC since I almost never play stuff that way so no need for Far Cry 3 map packs and that stuff.  I don't get the fascination with owning all the DLC for a game you haven't even tried yet... they can (hypothetically) add all the Remember Me DLC in the world for a penny each and I wouldn't want to return to that game so why wait on a Complete Edition?

Aliens: CM's DLC reeked of so much desperation to tie into the movies ("SHARP Sticks"?  Really?) that I'd actually sleep worse if I bought it :speaktothehand:  But when it was on sale for $1.25 you had people talking about the (less discounted) DLC all of a sudden.  In God's name, why?  "Hey, guys, I just bought this giant lump of shit.  Help me pick out which color Bedazzles to put on it!"

As much as I do want certain DLC's for ME2, ME3, and even DA2 from BioWare - b/c they're often sold at such a Premium and b/c BioWare Points hardly ever go on sale, I have just skipped them...well, at least for now, anyways

I'd guess if people do plan to play the living crap out of a game, whether spending ridiculous #'s of hours w/ it and/or replaying it a ridiculous # of times - one could justify spending higher price-tags on a game and still getting plenty of bang for their buck out of it. Certainly - after over 100 hours w/ Skyrim (base-game only) on my still 1st playthrough, one could say I've certainly got a lot value out of it.

My replay value is low on most games, though.

OK, I think I'll take a break from xRPGs for a game or two. I know what games I want to play next, but I'll let the gallery decide the order. So, what say you?

Bioshock Infinite
Deus Ex: HR DC
Dishonored
Far Cry 3

Far Cry 3 was a remarkable amount of fun, and I did every possible thing in the game, if memory serves.

I knifed a shark for giggles and shark meats.

About DLCs: I don't usually buy DLC, unless those are good ones or I'm a blind fan of the game. I'll buy every single DLC for Xcom and Deus Ex (and I did, on a 75% sale), but Tomb Raider? No. I'm not saying TR is a bad game (I really liked it), but I never was a fan. I may be buying some Sleeping Dogs DLCs soon just because I liked the game so much and want to continue playing it.

Good list of games there i'm gonna have to go with seduce me

the only one i've played is bioshock infinite, and i loved it. my vote is that for that reason.

Yeah. I don't get why video games can't just be more like board games on this matter.

I mean, I have Agricola. It is a complete game that comes with everything. Well, except for Agricola: Farmers of the Moor, that was the expansion. Oh, and Agricola CZ-Deck, Agricola Belgium Deck, Agricola Gamers Deck, Agricola NL Deck, and Agricola World Championship Deck , but those are each large sets of cards to augment the hundreds that already come with the game. Oh, and also some small decks like Agricola L Deck, Agricola X-Deck, Agricola Z-Deck, and Agricola: The Legendary Forest Deck. And of course Chuck the Woodchuck, a single-card expansion for the Legendary Forest Deck. And the Biogas Plant Promo Card. And the postcard expansion Through the Seasons.

But besides all of those, and some other stuff, Agricola comes with everything. Hmm, you know, looking back, that might not be the best example to make my point.

Perhaps examples like The Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, or Age of Steam would work better.

Video Games should be more like movies where once you buy it, you own that movie in perpetuity, no matter how many times it releases in new formats and special editions and director's cuts.

If you were to play just one of those, I'd say Far Cry 3. However, since you want to play all four and are asking for an appropriate order, here you go:

Dishonoured (Good game, but shortest of the lot iirc, and since it's a stealth game, you can't put it back to back with Deus Ex)

Far Cry 3 (Best of the lot imo, lots of fun, lots to do. If you haven't gotten Blood Dragon yet, this'll probably convince you to get it during the next sale)

Deus Ex: HR DC (Another stealth game, but you should be okay with it after the break that was FC3, good stuff. Bosses are kinda lame, but just about everything else is spectacular)

Bioshock Infinite (Eh, I still think it's overrated. It's okay, but the gameplay gets cut a lot of slack because of the story (much like Last of Us), the gameplay just isn't that great imo (absolutely hate the two-gun system and want it to die, still mixed on how I feel about the regenerating shield) and even the story has some stupid parts (the ghost fight being one of them). I thought the gameplay was a step back from the first two so, if you were fans of those, you may end up disappointed.)

I thought I should finally try LA Noire today. First there was the DirectX install, which I'm pretty sure is getting longer each time. Then it wanted my Rockstar Social Club account which I forgot the password of so I had to go to the website and reset it and check my email. Then I try to get back in the game but it's bad at alt-tab and it won't even let me see the Task Manager to close it.

Some games just want to be backlogged forever.

I blame Jshackles and enchnaced steam. Everything was just fine for me until stuff on my page started highlighting green, or worse, NOT green. Once that started, the OCD kicked in.

Dishonored, because it's the only one I've played besides Bioshock Infinite and I think it's a much better game.

Hmmm, seems like a tie between FC3 and BSI. For the record, I have already played DX:HR (but not the DC) and Dishonored (but not the DLC). I think I'll go FC3, Dishonored, BSI and DX:HR-DC.

Sounds good to me. I would have flipped Deus Ex and Infinite if I knew you'd played it. Have fun dude. :bouncy:

Yes, but one could easily play Agricola for ages with just the base game. Farmers of the Moor is like a full-on major expansion. The other decks? I just don't see the point of hunting them all down. It's cool they're out there, but my god, Agricola doesn't need them to keep you busy forever.

Speaking of which, who's got Agricola on ios? :D

One could just play the base game of Agricola. One could just play the base game of Dishonored. Me? I think it's harder to resist buying add-ons for Agricola than for Dishonored.

So I possibly have some extra Steam keys if any of you guys need them. I say possibly because these keys are from the Paywuw site sale and they sent me extra keys. Can't confirm if they work so if you want 1 of the following to try your luck PM me.

Rekoil
Takedown Red Sabre
Marlow Briggs

All gone thanks for playing

Seeing as I was just discussing racial issues, I feel Marlow Briggs is appropriate to ask for. :bouncy: I'll take that if you don't mind.

My god, even the racism debate on the Amazon thread was more exciting to read through than this DLC dissertation. Who recharged the toaster's fuel cell?

I haven't messed around with mods for SRTT yet, but that's good to know.
SR3 mods are awesome. Be sure to find the "tactical" weapon skins. So pretty.

I feel like it would work better if Mooby only recommended games (or anything), while there can be a standing rule that Mooby finds everything, ever, underwhelming unless otherwise stated.

FC3 gets repetitive after the first five or so hours.
mooby don't be so hard on yourself
Damn it you stole my post.

Honestly, I would play FC3 plus another game. FC3 can basically be played as an open world game pretty early on. So you can get a couple hours into that, then just play around on the map during breaks from Dishonored. Otherwise, FC3 seems to kind of drag if you play it straight through.

But Clark Kent is a newspaper reporter, not a lawn mower/custodian.
Well Superman was created while all white people were racist, so to be fair the new Superman will be a mild mannered Hispanic baseball player instead of a journalist.

Otherwise you're all privileged white racists who have no idea what you're talking about.

Now you're just changing the whole character. Might as well be talking about Super Hombre.
