 Anime Steals and Deals

**It is highly recommended you check the latest posts in this thread as they will often have the most up to date deals. I will attempt to reflect these sales in the OP, but always check the latest posts.**

Rightstuf

Rightstuf runs studio sales every week, sometimes even twice a week. These range from anime, manga, and even artbooks. Prices are decent, and Rightstuf has amazing customer service. I highly recommend them for that alone.

http://www.rightstuf.com/rssite/main/

You can save an additional 10% off a majority of their items (Including preorders) by buying their Got Anime membership

http://www.rightstuf.com/rssite/action/store/item/Item?ItemName=gotanime1

Amazon

Amazon tends to offer lower everyday prices on their anime, and often run sales on Funimation items routinely. Keep track on your favorites or check your daily deal's for a possible 5% off of some based off your history on Amazon.

(Also, I'd also recommend to check out Amazon's top 100 deals in Anime Bluray/DVD as they tend to show what's popular, or what is on sale.)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/movies-tv/2959127011/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_mov_1_3_last   (Blu Ray)

http://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Movies-TV-Anime/zgbs/movies-tv/2959100011/ref=zg_bs_nav_mov_2_2958934011 (DVD)

DVDPlanet / Deep Discount

Known by many for their bad customer service, they often make up for it with their lower prices on a lot of their items. This and they routinely run sales specifically for anime.

http://www.dvdplanet.com/Pages/Search/Category.aspx?ec=42000

http://www.deepdiscount.com/index.cfm

I highly suggest when you order from them to only order in stock items, and not ones that are backordered. Save yourself the displeasure of having to deal with the headaches. And patience is a must with these sites.

Cheapassgamer

Maybe you will find something here on our own forums! We have a thread dedicated specifically to Anime and Manga for sale from fellow Cags.

I checked on ANN about Escaflowne. Apparently Funimation only licensed the movie. The TV series is said to be licensed too (by Funi) but I don't see any press release about it.

^ Reminds me of when Gurren Lagann hit the US with just the sub and 4 episode DVDs.

The KLK Blus is just devious marketing on AoA's part as I know they are selling a ton of them. I think a majority of the buyers are just impulse buying it and not knowing it's only 4 episodes. I know some people really love the anime but I think this is a test on their part to see if people will actually buy it past the first volume. Madoka was only half of the episodes of KLK so they got away with it but this could end up differently...

(I wouldn't be so against it, this will be a total of nine volumes as this is 24 episodes + 1 OVA)

I highly doubt people are buying it without knowing how many episodes are on it,considering most people know how AoA operates by now. Now the next set is actually has 5 episodes on so the rest of the sets will be like that be like that, but at the end of the day your still paying 200 bucks for the whole series(300 of you get LE's).

I think people are slowly just starting to accept it. AoA will keep being AoA. I know they sold a crap-ton on Vol. 1 LEs at AX because of the KLK signing that was going on.

I just checked Blu-ray.com to reconfirm and the movie was released five years ago in so-so quality. The review shows that it was distributed by Bandai Visual. Regardless, I do own the "ultimate" set of the movie on DVD, and since I didn't enjoy the film as much as the TV series, I won't double-dip. It's a shame than FUNi hasn't done anything with its license, though. The Blu-rays released in Japan the other year, if I'm not mistaken, so maybe we'll see something in 2015 or 2016.

As for expensive anime (especially Aniplex), I'm not sure how many of us remember the days of when anime was ridiculously overpriced. Back in 2001 and 2002, I was paying roughly $25 (on "sale") for three to four episodes of a 24-26 episode TV series. There were usually about eight volumes, with an artbox, and no "legends" or discounted re-release of the full set until years later when complete series could be purchased for under $30. My mentality is that if I really, really liked the series, I'd be willing to drop the money to support it. In the case of Kill la Kill, Sword Art Online, and Fate/zero, most fans at least know what they are going into when purchasing the show. This is a contrast from over a decade ago when people would spend $30 on volume one of a show and had little to no knowledge of the show or if they would like it outside of previews and trailers. Fansubbing wasn't as accessible back then; not every show was picked up by a group or individual like how they are nowadays. At least in this day and age, if you're truly interested, you can just do a quick Google search, and the odds are you'll come across a few episodes to see if you want to actually own the series. Considering the goodies and packaging Aniplex provides with their releases, I'd say paying $60 for four episodes is fair. Remember, it used to cost a MSRP of $30-35 for one measly DVD with no bells and whistles.

That's the thing I don't like. I don't want instant gratification and plot points to be resolved next chapter or episode but I also don't want to be waiting 50 episodes for something to be resolved or introduced and in between then have nothing but crap.

We can all agree that bleach is the king of filler. About a good 60 episodes deal with the story and the rest other things and we're talking over a hundred episodes of pure shite. Not to mention if you did actually enjoy the show collecting it is a complete pain.
Uhh Naruto is the king of filler over Bleach. The # of episodes before Shippuuden started that were filler (shitty filler at that) was astronomical. It's still running, so it's still got filler to throw at us. Bleach's worst filler was the first Bounto arc and I guess the last one with the zanpakutou. It wasn't nearly as painful as Naruto's though. So many stupid, stupid episodes. Either way as mentioned, both manga seem to be wrapping up, which I think is a plus. Both good stories that need an end. I really hope we get some kind of blu-ray compilation at some point. If they do seasons, then I can at least skip the filler garbage...

Bleach only had one thing going for it (most times) is that it had filler arcs instead of random bits of filler like Shippuden does nearly all the time. Bleach only got real bad towards the end when it was it's last major arc (in the anime) and it just threw in random specials that nobody wanted or cared about right in the middle of it. Also, the only credit I can give the it's first and last filler arcs is that they actually fit into the Bleach timeline rather being forced into some sort of alternate universe for 20-30ish episodes. I hated the Bount arc the first time around because when I caught up to Bleach many moons ago, that arc was airing and I was miserable. The second time watching it, it wasn't as terrible since I marathoned it.

As for the AoA thing, I suppose some people are aware of what they are getting into. Those sets went out really quickly at Otakon because the cast was there too. I only started to buy anime when I was 18 but I used to watch my brother's DVD collection before then. I just remember him getting complete sets for $100+ and him buying anime on VHS before that. I just think we've all become a bit spoiled since anime is so cheap for complete sets these days.

As much as I love Gurren Lagann, no it isn't.

Hell, Gundam is my favorite anime ever and I refuse to buy the Unicorn Blu-rays.

If I had a full release of detective conan I would happily throw a half a grand at >.>

granted that would be less than $1 per episode at that point :p

and I have indeed spent a half grand on all of the episodes of the dragon ball series (aka db, dbz, dbgt)

The Gurren Lagann Blu-ray set was awesome. I was going to pull the trigger and purchase it from Amazon Japan since it came out to around $510 with the exchange rate but second guessed myself as the box was so large and unorthodox. I would have nowhere to put it, so I had to pass. Hopefully we'll get a cheaper set one day, and by cheaper, it'll probably be around $200. X_X

I'd go broke with a smile buying all of Case Closed (or w.e they want to call it)

Everyone has their spending limit on anime. I wouldn't hesitate on dropping $500+ on a Gundam set. Heck, I'd own all the Japanese BDs if they at least had subtitles. I do have all the Japanese versions of Unicorn though. Spend around $300 for those. I don't have a problem with AoA sets anymore now that I have the income lol.

Bummed that I didn't grab the Gurren Lagann set before it went OOP. Even then, spending $500 on it is iffy to me since I found a good chunk of it boring. But if opportunity calls, I'll bite on it.

Half of the set is useless anyway since none of the special features have subtitles(which is pushed as big feature of the set). I do understand it's an import so it's gonna cost a lot,but their so cheap they couldn't give that a properly region 1 release and instead do the opposite with the dvd version along with overpricing it.

Not a fan of the show, but it's a great deal, considering you could buy that and an all-region Blu-ray player together for less than $500.

I vividly remember the days of buying anime at $25-$30 per VHS tape, with only two or three episodes on them (or a single 40 minute OVA). But, nowadays, with how cheap DVD media is to reproduce, I would never spend over $100 for a complete DVD -- or for a Blu-Ray box set.

Just grabbed Book of Bantorra (spelling?) since it dropped to my sweet point. Accel World is next, along with SAO blu-ray sets 3 and 4 before SAO2 comes out physically here. Yes, I mean the Aniplex bend you over sets.

I've spent hundreds of dollars on anime and some of it on one particular series. I've spent about 150 to collect all of Dragonball and subsequent movies. I still have Z, GT, and all those movies. God help my soul.

In other news is Gurren Lagaan good. Anime Legends set is 40 on Amazon last I checked. Debating whether that or Kenshin complete. Someone help.

ANN posted some editorial or opinionesque piece about 7 gateway anime for people to get into. Pretty solid.https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/the-list/2014-08-23/.77834

Fruits Basket and Tenchi Muyo round at the top spots. Surprisingly Bebop is 7 which in itself is a disgrace since it is imo one of the few anime to be at the pinnacle of excellent music, animation, voice, and story. Evangelion is no where to be found.

Evangelion 3.33 may release in December if Spike Spencer has anything to do with it. He tweeted out that he was doing some final voicework for the flick and when a few fans responded about a possible release he said you'll get it soon. Hopefully we do and Funi adds something extra to compensate for such a heavily delayed movie. December-February-TBA

^You missed this part of the article  "This week's list is a rundown of what to introduce friends to based on their tastes, and isn't in a hierarchical order." As for the list I would switch out Tenchi and replace it with something like Cromartie Highschool instead.

That is a very solid list. Only ones I would replace are FMA and Fruits Basket. I see Trigun as having more of a western appeal, and Outlaw Star too, making them both gateway shows for people who don't typically watch anime. Definitely think Tenchi belongs on the list, but I'd specify Tenchi Universe, as it breaks up the monotony of some of the other Tenchi titles.

As for which series to go with, Gurren Lagann or Kenshin, I'd definitely go with Kenshin. I found Gurren Lagann to be overrated, and stopped watching around ten episodes in. Not bad artwork, but the "whiny/weak main character who has a powerful mecha" trope has worn thin for me.

Yes you do. Make it a double shot.

Yea, I just said "fuck it" and bought the sets from TRSI about a month ago. Got tired of eBay auctions almost never getting cheap enough.

Only hundreds? :p

Eh you can get GL for $30 if you look hard enough. I've seen some AL sets go as low as $25 shipped on eBay.

That ANN article is OK. I wouldn't put Another on there. It wasn't anything special. The rest are relative to taste. I'm surprised at the lack of EVA, that is usually on every list.

I can't believe I have went this long without any 3.33 spoilers lol. All I know is that the fanbase is split on it. Sucks that they are not going up to 6.66 like originally planned.

I have yet to see it and only know a few very minor details, so I'm pretty excited. I can't imagine how long it would have taken them to make 6 movies...

I mostly agree with that list, and yes, Fruits basket IS a good gateway anime. I've shown it to hundreds (and I do mean hundreds, including tons of people at my christian college). Only one person out of that huge group didn't like it. And, Black Lagoon is a good anime, but it gets kind of weird and the villains get pedo-weird after a certain point.

You should show High School DxD at the school. I'm sure it would go over very well. haha

BTW, what is the best release for Fruits Basket? I'm looking to purchase it and I'm curious which is the best DVD.

Thanks

I believe all of the releases are the same, but the prettiest box was the LE box they released for the first dvds they released. I believe it's this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fruits-Basket-Box-Set-DVD-2004-4-Disc-Set-Uncut-Complete-Anime-/191266799987?pt=US_DVD_HD_DVD_Blu_ray&hash=item2c8863c173
That LE continues to elude me. So hard to find it for not like 60$.

Also while doing my morning rounds, it was brought to my attention that the "excluded from membership" note was removed from funi titles (at least all I had preordered). So those like me who never bought a got anime from Rightstuf, this may be the time. It paid for itself and I still saved!

Yea, the membership exclusions were removed when the sale started. I emailed them about past pre-orders, and they adjusted it down to the sale price.

Didn't ask about Attack on Titan 2 LE, cause it's sold out.

Just got my copy of Short Peace. Sentai's supplier decided to put on these stupid stickers which will ruin the slipcover if you pull them off which is frustrating.

I have gone so long without any Eva 3.33 spoilers so I'm hoping to keep my trek going. I don't understand the delay at all. From what I read it was between Misato and Shinji's characters not conveying a good emotion for a certain scene instead conveying anger. Nonetheless you'd think they'd have that fixed by now if it was playing in theatres. Also there were some on disc audio stuff which was confirmed. I live in a city with one of the biggest music festivals in history and a huge film festival as well yet Eva 3.33 did not play anywhere near me. Eff you FUNI

They are all the same discs, so the current Anime Classics release is fine.

Thanks for the heads up. Probably will pick up the Classic version then. And yeah that slipbox is pretty nice. Too bad that one in the auction is pretty beat up.

Yeah this was dicussed in the anime section at br.com. Sentai have addressed this issue by stating they are aware of it and any future release won't have them. Also you can use the hair dryer method and remove them that way. I was going to try goo gone but after reading about people even attempting to remove I just cut them. I will try the hair dryer method later.

I'd sell you my fruits basket box, but it fell off the shelf, and I fell on it one night, so it's very damaged, but not destroyed.  Whoops wrong person

I got lucky and bought that version of fruits basket used on amazon for $15 the other week used in pretty good condition. I think the later edition had an art book or something cool but I liked the art box from this version.
