Why do they (Bayonetta or others) need to go away? You can honestly tell me there aren't some girls or women out there who find Bayonetta empowering and awesome? There were probably girls cos-playing as her at Comic Con. It's just an over generalization based on one opinion. It's just not realistic to remove all these characters. You think in the real world a woman has never used her sexuality to get ahead or get one over on someone? It's silly to try to shoebox all this stuff, it's a broad weird world out there. There have also been games with stronger woman lately too, Tomb Raider, Last Of Us, etc. but I don't see why they can't co-exist.
I have a friend (female) that got a huge ass bayonetta tattoo on her arm.

iOS 8 seriously has the most fucked up autocorrect system ever. "Friends send" gets turned into "fent". Even when I just typed it there, it turned it into fent. Seriously, who the fuck programs this shit?
Maybe, now that ios has other keyboards you are "allowed" to use by apple, its time for you to man up and buy swiftkey.

Best. Keyboard. Evar.

I guess I don't understand how True Trophies works. Vanquish is objectively a more difficult plat, but 3D Dot Heroes is worth 25% more points.

I'll reserve judgment on the Bayonetta discussion as I haven't played either of the games so I don't know if there is any kind of context for the hyper-sexualization in the narrative. That contrasts with something like Dragon's Crown where the sorceress is designed in an anatomically impossible way (her breasts are even larger than her head) and that's it, there's no broader context.

Platinum games just has weird fixations, like how often the main character is smoking in Vanquish.

I put in my resignation letter for Nov 2 today and my manager asks "can you push it back a week?"

So my final day will be November 9.

...Except, they plan on keeping me active in the system in case they need my help...

The place is a fucking nightmare.

I think that ultimately games will continue to hypersexualize women until there are monetary incentives that prevent it. And by that I mean sales; games that give women equal treatment selling well is always going to be the best argument for those games being made. Female gamers are a population that's grown a ton and they're also spending more money on games than men now (according to a report I saw a month or two back, anyway). Trying to cater to that audience will naturally cause a change in the way general games are made, with hypersexuality being toned down and women being brought into more natural roles (or into games in general; I don't think there was a single female character in CoD: Ghosts, for example.)

Sure, we'll see plenty of indie games that treat women well, and that's already happening, but from a corporate perspective the only thing that matters is money.

Edit: Actually I recall one of the astronauts at the beginning of Ghosts being female. I think she had a one-liner to the effect of "Be a man and kill somebody!" because clearly she wasn't equipped to do so herself, then she follows your character around for about three minutes before both of you die.

It's driven by rarity among the players who play the game. If five people play 3D Dot Heroes and all five plat it, the game is worth exactly the number of points a typical trophy is worth, with a 1.0 multiplier for each trophy. If five people plat the game out of 100,000 the trophies are worth a whole lot more. Based on what you've said, without even looking at TT, I'd bet that the completion percentage for Vanquish is quite a bit higher than that of 3D Dot heroes.

Yes, but games have a rating system, just like movies do. Games with more mature themes are appropriately rated as such. It's not the developers responsibility to not make games with said themes, it's the responsibility of parents to restrict access, just like people do with movies. The problem I have with arguments like yours is that you want to eliminate a specific character type/style of game/whatever, just because it may be offensive to you or to a younger/more impressionable audience. While that is with good intention, those of us who are "more mature" or not offended shouldn't be deprived of those experiences if we so choose to have them.
(see: The porn industry)

I don't see a reason why both can't exist. If people want game with women who are powerful and dressed in pants suits, then why not write/develop them? There's clearly a market that wants this.
I'm not calling for them to be completely removed; there's a time and a place for that sort of thing. But at this point in time that character archetype is all that exists in the vast majority of games. Perhaps Bayonetta isn't the best example, but you can look at games like Ninja Gaiden, Resident Evil 4, Metal Gear Solid, etc etc that purposely sexualize characters to appear more erotic (Kojima even explicitly said that was the point with MGS5) and appeal to what a lot of people still see as the market for games: teenage boys. Obviously games are bigger than that, and developers need to stop catering to them just because that's how it's always been.

I don't care if people want a certain experience, one I might personally object to, but I do care that a medium I love hasn't managed to progress out of puberty, and when people question the fact that maybe that's a problem they get shot down and labeled as feminist extremists/social justice warriors/too many obscene terms I'm not going to repeat here. Games aren't solely the past time of teenage boys anymore (nor were they ever really). All I want is for designers to recognize that instead of just continuing to create these experiences that are continuing to exclude people, whether directly or indirectly from the people who play them and take offence that others would dare want to partake in their past time.

And I think it's pretty silly to pretend that video game ratings are taken with anywhere near the same level of weight as movie ratings are. I'd warrant a guess less than half the parents buying these games for their kids are even aware of what they are, and are just buying what they were told to buy.

But how will that fix the autocorrect? Unless this keyboard comes with some other dictionary.

Also, how can I fix the fact that I had 100% charge this morning, and I'm now down to 51% after barely using it? I have the Britney's turned way down, only wifi on, nothing running in the background, and it drains the battery like nothing. And I used to be able to leave it on the charger overnight and I'd have 100% in the morning, but now I'm lucky if it goes up 20-25%. I really wish I never upgraded.

6.67% vs. 6.83%, not that big a difference. I guess it must be because of individual trophy rarity. A lot of Vanquish's trophies are naturally unlocked over the course of play whereas in 3D Dot Heroes you have to go out of the way to complete them. So 25% more people in Vanquish got 40-49 trophies than in 3D Dot Heroes I guess, but a similar amount of people platted each game

The platinum itself is pretty much the same for points since both of them are at 7%. The difference is that it appears a lot of trophies in 3D Dot have low percentages where in Vanquish it is only a few. That means that all those other trophies get huge bumps in score making the game worth more overall.

Dismissing games as just entertainment is like dismissing film and literature as such. Treating it like it's still a niche hobby is part of the problem, when video games are rather obviously a huge medium now with room for more intelligent and mature experiences than just mindless ways to pass time.

And yes, games (nor any medium for that matter) shouldn't be used as a means to develop personal morals, but when they're clearly taking up large portions of peoples time that becomes an inevitable side effect, which is why it's unwise to treat them like harmless play things. People are clearly taking things away from these games, probably subliminally, so calling for more equality in characters and how games are presented shouldn't be up for debate. Every other medium has had to go through this growing process, and if nobody speaks up for games nothing will ever change.
Then explain who you're speaking out to. Do you want people to vote with their wallets and not buy bayonetta? or do you want to encourage aaa developers to change their stories and characters to be more diverse? or encourage indie developers to take more risks with regards to character? speaking up is great, but speaking up just for the sake of speaking up doesn't accomplish much without a point.

I'm trying to think of games I've played recently where women are oversexualized and not much is coming to mind. I think there's certainly a lack of variety in main characters in general (gender, race, etc), but perusing my recently played games doesn't exactly make me think there's a ton of over-the-top uncalled for sexualization still going on like in the olden days. maybe I'm just missing out on it though.

also, I think we're probably ruining the thread. evil within tomorrow, god willing there isn't an ounce of sexuality in that.

I'll just say that there are men out there that would like to see female characters that aren't just window dressing. Shock. I'd certainly be more taken with the stories in video games if they weren't so generic and terrible.

Absolutely. I've played a few games this year with strong female characters and every one was improved by their presence.

I'm not going to keep going back and forth, because honestly, at the end of the day, I really don't care, as long as games that I enjoy playing keep being released. I'll enjoy it in my own space. We can just agree to disagree.

But every time I buy a game with a mature rating, or whatever it is, a little prompt at the register tells them to check my id. How is this any different from going to see an R-rated movie? Once again, the onus is on the parents to not blindly buy something if they are that worried about their kids being exposed to that kind of thing. There is more than enough information on the internet these days to keep parents well informed.

You turn down for Britney? Tyler's mom's name is Britney, confirmed.

That's actually true. I get away with a lot of shit I should get in trouble for mostly because I'm almost irreplaceable.

All of the above? I figured that much was obvious; nothing will change if it's just a few people saying "hey, this isn't right" or skipping a game because of stuff like this. It's all just a blip on the developers radar until enough people speak up about it in whatever way they can that they start to take notice.

Swiftkey would replace the stock apple keyboard (something android has had for YEARS). It has its OWN predictive text that learns really well. It has themes etc to change the look of the keyboard too. Also has swype like functionality built in as well (swipe around just one finger to spell out stuff).

How many power cycles has your phone been through? Batteries take a few charge cycles to get working to their full capacity.

Best bet with a new phone is to charge it full, drain it, leave it off, charge it full off, drain it again, and charge it again to full with it on this time.

Give it a few charge cycles and if battery is still bad return it for a Moto X.

You're making more ridiculous statements. Why is it unrealistic if these characters go away (or at least are vastly reduced)? You're talking like the sort of extremists that are now sending rape and death threats to people (most of them women) who are speaking out against this sort of thing, because removing that sex appeal among other things is somehow going to ruin their games. Can you see why this might be a problem? It's fostering a view of gaming that games are just created as expensive toys for men, which is stifling the medium and allowing for the sort of rampant man babies that associate themselves so strongly with them to continue doing so because these games are made solely for them and nobody is willing to challenge that fact.

You can point to a few examples of strong female characters (most of which aren't the leads, I will add), but that doesn't change the fact that games are still largely being created in a vacuum for straight white dude bros to live out their power fantasies in. I'm not saying those games can't exist, but when the VAST majority of games released are nothing but that you have a problem.

Also here's an article worth reading that's not entirely related to this argument but features the choice quote that "out of the 669 current-gen games which had protagonists of a specific gender, only 24 of these were exclusively fronted by women": http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-03-19-why-publishers-refuse-games-such-as-remember-me-because-of-their-female-protagonists
I seriously don't appreciate you comparing me to people like this:

You're talking like the sort of extremists that are now sending rape and death threats to people (most of them women) who are speaking out against this sort of thing, because removing that sex appeal among other things is somehow going to ruin their games.

You are going way above and beyond any sort of rational conversation with a statement like that.

Ellie and Lara are in fact leads in those respective games and they are strong women.

I won't speak with you on this subject any more.

Not to get all tech support cliché on you, but have you tried turning it off and on? I had a similar problem with my new 6+ where it would barely charge 5% after a couple hours and I had everything closed. Seems there was an app that didn't really get closed and when I reset it, it worked swimmingly and the battery life is actually quite good even though I got tons of shit running and I read all the asshole banter in here all day.

Hey is the vita PS now beta starting tomorrow? Or did I make that up? I have a few spacebucks in the old wallet, I might test it out for the greater good.

And I switched phone keyboards this week and my capitalization is worlds better now.

I've had this for almost two years now. Never had a single issue until I upgraded to 8. Once I did that, I can't make it through a full day without charging. I used to go 2-3 days before I'd get the 10% warning and have to charge.

And the Brtiney's/brightness thing is exactly what the fuck I was talking about. It's like ios 7 used to have a context detector for picking the best word to auto correct to, and 8 just said fuck that just put in whatever the fuck we want.

Oh.

Well theres your problem. Apple makes the old phones work like shit on new updates to make you be like damn, I need that new iphone 6.

Yea if a new ios increases in #, you might as well upgrade to the latest phone. Otherwise you are just gonna be frustrated.

Squirrel, I would be with you and Polygon on this debate if it were about a real issue like calling for women to be raped etc.  But "hyper sexualization" is dumb.  Women have been using their sexuality to get what they want from dumb (all of us) men since Adam and Eve.  And we love them for it and celebrate it through video games and all kinds of media.

I still dont know why people would want to use butt plugs and nipple clamps though.

You would if you tried it.

I've tried Swiftkey and don't see any real improvement. It's different but not better and I seem to be faster with the stock keyboard. Maybe Android's stock one is just terrible?

The obvious answer is that there isn't a market for games that center on having a powerful woman who looks and acts like a man or neutral sex human. The amount of people who care about that sort of thing over gameplay and story/plot are statistically nonexistent.

I've seen SJWs bitch about fucking Metroid, about how Metroid is sexist and evil because Samus is covering up her womanhood, implying that she should be ashamed or something. And that her portrayal in the original is horrific because they show her in a bikini. Because it's so easy to portray a female character in a fucking 8 bit game. These people aren't even gamers, they're agitators with an agenda. And they're fucking cancer.

tl;dr version: SJWs bitch about female portrayals in games, then bitch when what they claim to want is the main character of one of the greatest games made to date.

Good thing I have a Windows Phone and don't have any of these issues! Microsoft for the win!

But yeah, I have this ipad that I won through a work contest that used to be great but now sucks donkey ass.

Did you let it scan your text messages and emails to learn your communication style? Swiftkey's biggest strength (IMO) is its predictive typing. I can type multiple full sentences by just selecting words or typing one letter to make it prompt for the correct words because it's gotten a good enough understanding of my sentence structure and word choice that it can usually anticipate each upcoming word correctly.

Oh boy!  Lost discussion AND an argument about female characters in games!

And least I was able to catch up really quickly today since I didn't have to read any of that dumb shit.

Like who? I only knew about one or two. :whistle2:k
Who have you guys seen silenced and/or banned? Name names people, not like you'll get in trouble for mentioning you saw that someone else was banned.

Read on this thread that mask air raid was banned, that is awesome. Dude was a gigantic jackass.

Some guy in the Club Nintendo thread has Professor Layton as his avatar so I think I'm responding to MrNinjaSquirrel and then when I see who I responded to, I'm like who the fuck is RoytheRobot, did MrNinjaSquirrel change his user name?
