Should've just got a prebuilt... oh...

Welcome to the club.
Yeah, the regulars on this thread advised me to try to build my own PC for less, but frankly, I just don't have the time. I'm also a fan of kitschy underdog devices, so the Alpha was right up my alley. To put things in perspective, I've got an Atari Jaguar, a Phillips CD-I, a 3DO and a Virtual Boy in my bedroom closet. So, my habit of wasting my hard-earned money didn't start with the Alpha. But, it works as advertised. Therefore, I'm happy with it.

I've been using my Steam Link a fair amount lately so I can play on my couch and it's been making me want a full fledged HTPC in my living room. If I could find one of those Alphas or other steam box for less than $200 I'd probably bite, but that's never likely to happen.

I'd keep those systems inside a closet too.

Apparently, there was some sort of glitch months ago where Dell was selling new i3s for around $200 on its website before the mistake was caught, but I missed that. And, Walmart has a third party seller who is offering refurbed i3s for around $300, but that's the best I've seen. I scoped out Amazon Warehouse Deals because a lot of things that are under the radar drop in price after a while, so you might want to check there. Based on reddit posts, the Alphas are preferred to the newer Steam boxes because they also have Windows already installed. The newer Steam boxes don't have Windows on them.

It's funny because the Alpha's case is only slightly bigger than the Dreamcast's, which shocked me. Therefore, it would probably be a nice addition to a home entertainment set-up if you don't have much space. The Steam Big Picture mode looks really good on my TV. I've been playing Crazy Taxi, Spelunky and Downwell on it all morning.

Just spent money on case fans, cooler fans, led strip for my window, razer mouse and mouse pad, and more ram, which I didn't need.

I need help for my disease. :wall:

Anyways, I have a cheap mouse and few stock fans if anyone needs shit cheap. =P~

Oh, ya'll should add me on steam. AModestLion

And who knows, you may one day figure that you absolutely love playing games on a PC and may want to venture down that path of building your own. If you do, we, and a bunch of other communities, will be glad to assist.

Thanks for the positive post. At this point, I think debating whether or not I should have bought the Alpha or not is rather pointless since (a) I own it now and (b) I actually like it. But it's not future-proofed since the GPU can't be upgraded, so I might take a shot at building a PC someday. I wouldn't bother trying to run something like Fallout 4 or Rise of the Tomb Raider on this bad boy, but it's played everything from the previous gen that I've tried so far with flying colors. And at the end of the day, isn't it really more about the games than the hardware anyway?

Nothing like building your own PC from my very new experience, but there is nothing wrong with trying prebuilt ones out first to see if you like it enough to invest in the time and probably money in building your own. Enjoy your machine and worry about the other stuff later, my friend.

Absolutely. Welcome to PC Gaming by the way! The trickiest thing about PC gaming is that there isn't a specific life span for anything, like a console. Where as an announcement of the new console means the support for the old one is going to die off within the next few years.

@JoseKortez:

Yeah, no upgrade on the GPU sucks. That's one of the most important pieces for any gaming PC.

Hmmmm, maybe StryderOmega can answer this:

@StryderOmega:

I do know that some Alienware laptops have a graphics card amplifier box which connects to the laptop - and you can put in a desktop-style graphics card box into that box.

Does Alienware have such a thing one could connect with an Alienware Alpha box?

Finished with Dragon's Dogma. Well, I could New Game+ it and get to level 200 and farm Blackbitter Isle for gear but I got other shit to play, too.

Was fun, glad Motoki recommended it. The combat is entertaining and gives a fair amount of flexibility, I enjoyed the pawn system where you recruit NPCs from other players to fill out your party and the open world nature gives you the chance to chase the main plot or just dink around for a while. The upgradable loot system allows for incremental advances in gear giving you some reward for poking around. The class system is very flexible, where you can change vocations on a whim and try new things while gaining some potential permanent benefits in the form of cross-class skills.

On the other side, the world is pretty small and not especially varied, enemy selection is pretty limited and the whole RPG/plot nature of the game is weak. It's a "silent protagonist" sort of game where you never actually get to have a dialogue but are rather just told what to go do (kill stuff and bring back stuff). Towards the end, it gets very repetitive.

So, if you like active combat and some measure of grind, Dragon's Dogma is likely up your alley. If you want a deep RPG experience, keep looking. The port seems fairly well done, looks acceptably attractive for an older game and I played through it on M+KB which worked fine aside from some expected standard hotkeys not working (no "M" for map, etc). I got 130+ hours out of it for a little over $20 (and still haven't done most BBI content) so I can't complain.
Y u no play on console?

I'll see myself out...

No, but what you can do is build a rig (or buy a prebuilt) and use the Alpha as a HTPC and stream games to it using your real computer.

Edit:

Also, even if it were possible, the Alpha will still be severely bottle-necked by the CPU and RAM.

I know, but my main reason for buying the Alpha was to finally download and play the games that I had already bought or gotten for free that were in my Steam Library. Most of those are PS3/360 generation or earlier which the Alpha can handle with no problems. I don't need to buy Fallout 4 on PC since I already have it on Xbox One. I just like the idea of being able to take advantage of the Steam/Humble Bundle sales. For instance, I bought Rocket Knight Adventures for $3.74 during the Lunar New Year Sale. As a retro gaming enthusiast, I've always wanted to play it, but I didn't want to pay the $14.99 that PSN and XBLA charge for it. So, that was my reason for looking for a cheap entry point into PC gaming. There have been reports on reddit of people being able to run games like Fallout 4 and the new Tomb Raider on i3 Alphas but only on the lowest settings (hope that makes sense). Buying an i5 would have cost me at least $150 more. So I figure what's the point in bothering? I'm perfectly content with my backlog at the moment, which I'm sure will increase in a short while. ;)

My Alienware Alpha i3 finally came in from Amazon Warehouse Deals yesterday.
Congratulations on your new computer. Hope you have a lot of fun with it and it's the first step on your path to becoming a big hardware snob.

Also, congratulations on being the guy Motoki talks about when he says "Sure this sale sucks for YOU but if you've never bought a PC game before in the past 15 years, this is actually a pretty swell deal..." Go get them swell deals :D/

If one could run FO4 + RotTR on i3 Alphas, that's cool it actually runs and all - but I guess it'll probably technically look like "meh" and/or run like "meh." I would love to see benchmarks on this!

Since FO4 PC isn't that spectacular-looking here with a Custom mix of mostly Ultra + some High settings at 1080p - IMHO, this is a game that needs as much graphical bump as possible.

What they need to do is to redo their engine. It certainly needs a fresh coat of paint, especially since it has been in use since Morrowind.

Dragon's Dogma is better than Witcher 3 in every way.

Transformers Devastation is a more hardcore, deeper, and all-around better action RPG with better boss fights than Dark Souls 1.

Has anyone bought an out of region Uplay key and used a vpn to activate? Asking for an evil friend.
I have not. When there was the FC4 and AC: Unity "deal" from Uplay India a year or so back, people reported that it required a VPN not just to activate but also every time you launched the game.

Dragon's Dogma is better than Witcher 3 in every way.
Dragon's Dogma failed me in the tits & ass department.

Granted, I don't have DD: DA PC...

But I would highly doubt Dragon's Dogma is actually better than W3 at storytelling; writing; dialogue; narrative; voice-acting; and different outcomes b/c of the branching multiple pathways from decision-making.

Also, I'd guess W3 is technically a much better looking game graphically than DD: DA PC [which is a last-gen game getting a PC remaster, more or less].

Granted, FO4 PC isn't terrible-looking at all technically - but at my Custom settings Ultra + High mix at 1080p, it looks like it's somewhere b/t last-gen and this-gen games.

Also, FO4 PC needs more than TAA support in-game/in-engine. That just ain't cutting it for me - needs more AA options than TAA + FXAA, in-engine/in-game.

I actually thought DD was better at storytelling and voice-acting.

I didn't see much of the branching decision making either that actually impressed me but DD has almost none of that usual WRPG style "YUO CAN ONLY SAVE ONE OF TWO CHOICES" nonsense so I can't give DD a win in that tick box.

The tits are too small but if you design your pawn right she can have a fantastic ass.

Well looks like the Fox won't be taking a trip to Brazil.

Ooh, can you guess how DD will compare to Fallout 5 or Witcher 4? What about DD2? What are your guesses on that?

Also what will the DRM be? When will they be 75% off? And when will Red Dead Redemption finally get a PC port.

Inquiring minds don't want to know!

Yes, I actually would like to know.

And where the hell is Red Dead Redemp 2?

Dragon's Dogma 2, FO5, and W4 ain't already out; don't have professional + gamers reviews out there; don't have lots of opinions floating around everywhere; lots of videos floating around - so, not even worth me thinking about guessing on graphics quality, performance, and things of that sort yet.

EDIT #2:

Well looks like the Fox won't be taking a trip to Brazil.
[Curious]

Are you going to go anywhere else instead?

I think you have cheaper options (The Division, right?) But while uplay does regions on their platform they ignore them (or mostly ignore them) on Steam.

But unless you're doing gold I don't see how anything is going to be cheaper than a NVIDIA code.

no one update us on GMG deal anymore..
GMG deals:

Shit you don't want

Shit that isn't near the cheapest price

New games for 36-45 dollars

That pretty much sums up every GMG sale I've seen in a good while, Anymore, mostly just check VIP, see I don't want any of the new games (or others, in the rare times it isn't just all new games) and then forget about the site for a few weeks.

Wait - I thought GMG had best non-VPN deal for FO4 Season Pass with 20% off coupon before the murderous MSRP price increase coming on March 1st?
