Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

Star Ocean V is my 2nd highest wanted game this year with only Persona 5 beating it (ah the fives...). Two of my favorite series though I didn't like Star Ocean 4 much and wasn't as fond of Star Oceans 3 combo skill system which made some characters extremely weak and made magic also extremely weak. I got rid of Cliff (I believe was his name) almost immediately after being able to since his pool was pathetic to say the least. Just not my favorite battle system and pretty much meant every battle you had to heal to max afterwards...just got old but was a decent game.

 
Ys VIII Gets New Screenshots on Famitsu: Introduces New Characters

We get to meet Dogi and Captain Barbaros respectively Adol’s long lost adventuring companion and a seaman who lost his ship. Accompanying Barbaros there’s also the parrot Paro. We also see the ability to develop a village, where it’ll be possible to farm and give housing to several NPCs.

We get to see more of the cast, including a tease of several unannounced characters, and also more pictures of the environments inspired by Shimane Prefecture’s capital city Matsue, which will serve as the setting for the game.

Dogi, man, you just keep getting buffer in ever game. It's not easy for a wall crusher to keep up with advances in wall fortifying technology.

 
I would love to have Valkyrie Profile back on the PSN to buy for my Vita, remastered or not.  LOVE LOVE LOVE that game.  Please, make it happen. :(  

Also, FF15 for PC needs to happen.  I did it, Square; I bought FF13 series entirely on PC.  I did my part of this dirty bargain.  I also bought FF14.  Now, cmon.  Do us a solid.

I don't know how I feel about FF XV yet.

I played the 4 hour demo when it was offered with the FF Type-0 game but I could not get away from this is 4 jpop stars on a road trip. Which sounds like a so bad it's good idea for the game. Now the more I see this game actually looks serious which is a little bit sad. Either way I will still day one it because I am hyped.

Now all I need is that Persona 5 and Star Ocean 5 release date so I can plan out the rest of my gaming year.

I have no expectations for FFXV...so yeah. Looks nice though i'm not fond of these characters at all. Maybe I will grow to like them but right now they just don't appeal to me. 

 
Sucks that the Collectors edition is a Square Enix Store exclusive. No GCU on it :{ I do like the deluxe edition steelbook more though.

No new free PSN junk this week. Although, I did come across Chronicles of Teddy: Harmony of Exidus that's being published by Aksys Games that released today for the PS4 & Wii U (Digital Only). Probably would have added it to the weekly release list had I known. Granted it's not really Japanese, but could potentially be a decent metroidvania (I think?) game.

While at work I checked my email and finally got a shipping notice from NISA. Checked the tracking number and the game was already delivered. Seems like it was shipped last week, but didn't actually leave till the 28th. Oh well, just happy to have it. Nice little package.

Since it wasn't mentioned by others, I got the Gust-chan DLC code in my email a little over 2 hours ago. So if you've been wondering where it was, hopefully you've got it or will get it soon.

 
The pre-orders for the FF15 Super CE is tonight right? I told myself I would never buy another Square Store exclusive CE after seeing how much they drop a few months down the line, but this one actually seems limited. Mainly because of the Play-Arts Kai figure, and I love those figures. Any idea how much it'll cost though, the PAKs are usually like $100 themselves, has to be around $200 right?

Yeah, 12am est 9pm pst. I like the steelbook in the deluxe edition more, but I'll pre-order this version and decide later. Too bad the site seems to be choking and won't let me log in....

 
Wow wtf, it's like almost $300 and no free shipping, they still gotta charge you an extra $10. But you get some postcards and 2x points... 

I mean the resell value will be really high, especially with the Play Arts Kai collectors, but it's almost the cost of a new console...

Alright... um... 7 months away, around 30 days a month... 210 days... around a dollar and a half each day...

Alrighty then, this just became the most expensive game I ever purchased. Now I gotta stick to my plan of saving $1.50 a day until it comes out. 

Anyone know how easy it is to cancel an order? Is it just a few clicks on their site, or do I gotta make a call or something? 

If you are buying to resell it, which I hope you aren't, neither I am, I would recommend the PS4 version, all of their CEs on both platforms always sells out first on Playstation. PS products also retain a higher value, with more people having them, especially if the same number of CEs were made on both platforms. Idk if 30,000 units means 15K on each or 30K on each though...

Edit: If a democratic nominee wins the presidency, minimum wage shoots up to $15 an hour, huge inflation... okay I'm kinda babbling here...

Usually have to email them unless they changed their system. At least that's what I had to do for a previous purchase. Was pretty easy though.

edit: actually, if you manage order, there's a cancel pre-order button. Guess they added it. I haven't had to cancel anything in over half a year, so not sure when they added it.

I would have splurged on that CE if it was an ALTER figure of Aranea instead of that Square Enix brand Noctis. 

Going to just stick with the regular edition.

Well it has a waiting list for the PS4 edition so obviously everyone bought it up. Regular edition for me as well.

More Trillion impressions:

I got my first milestone....don't want to spoil anyone but yeah a lot of work for...yeah. this game is very, very repetitive....like almost to an extreme. I do like the story missions that come up now and then. Fighting Trillion and fake Trillion is very, very repetitive though. You learn most of the attacks, and it's not too bad at first. The battles play very similarly and it's just a battle of attrition with training/spending time/giving gifts/leveling up until you go crazy. It's not terrible though I do feel the drudge and you make your own mistakes for the most part. I haven't played a game like this in a while, but it's not like anything I've played in a while. Honestly I feel it would be better to wait for it to drop unless you really want a beat the numbers type grinding RPG/Visual Novel/Simulation hybrid. The characters are pretty cool which likely keeps me going. I will finish off Trillion eventually but it's going to be a long haul...I can already tell. 

 
I hate when special editions that have steelbooks don't include standard cases. I don't like steelbooks... or at least I don't like cases that don't match on the shelf. I always end up looking for a standard case to display.

EDIT: Holy smokes, did that Collector's Edition sell out that quickly at $280? For a game that doesn't come out for 5 months?

People been waiting for this game 8+ yrs man. Lol.
 
The FF15 event was painful(ly hilarious) to watch.  What a crap show of bad "acting", too much teleprompt reading, and stars who didn't really want to be there.  A total of "15" announcements, really just 4 (anime, movie, mini game, real game IIRC).  Still console locked and MAN, what they showed was at a terrible frame rate and lack luster on the visuals side compared to any other modern release.  And my eyes about rolled out of my head at the bad looking car transformation.

And yo, I've loved me some FF. 

I'll remain hopeful, but likely will wait for the eventual 6-12 month later PC release and the eventual $5 newegg purchase.
