Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

How can you actually tell? Are they usually obvious?

I would assume Amazon would let you return it or is that not the case since it's a third party seller?

If it's the seller I'm remembering from looking last night, you got it coming from Hong Kong. I'd put your chances at like 70/30, :fridge:

They're easier to pick out if you have a known authentic to compare it with. Usually the brightness/darkness on the labels won't be exactly the same, or colors will be slightly off, that kinda thing.

Bootleggers don't always screw this part up, but you can check the serial number on the cartridge (not 100% sure DS games have these, but I know GBA games do).

One of the Summon Night games for GBA's serial number ends in 'BSKE', but on many bootlegs all using the same label it's printed 'BSXE' and was probably a typo. The BSXE serial is actually for a hotwheels game or something, I believe - not Summon Night. Gamefaqs has the serial numbers listed for most things.

If DS games print serials on their cartridges it looks like Infinite Space should be 'NTR-C6CE-USA'

http://www.gamefaqs.com/ds/946344-infinite-space/data

Amazon will cover you if you think you got a counterfeit, but I think they might require you to message the seller directly first, wait a certain number of days for them to respond, and only after that open a claim. So ultimately you'll be fine, but it might take a long time if the seller is unresponsive or something.

If that seller also has a ton of copies available for sale I'd also be really suspicious of its authenticity. You can try adding it to you cart again and adding a large number of copies like 50 or something and see what happens.

EDIT: Oh, and of course read feedback people have left. Sometimes if they're intentionally selling a lot of bootlegs you'll see a lot of negative reviews calling them out on it.

All that nice info Pheria posted is legit. I'll just add that seller is from Singapore. Still kinda like rolling a dice though. But like the above CAG said, you'll be covered. Just annoying. :(

Nintendo says NX will compensate for drop in Wii U sales

The King of Fighters XIV North American box art features PS4 Console Exclusive Game logo

The same logo was previously used with Street Fighter V, which only came out on the PlayStation 4 and PC. Although a PC version of The King of Fighters XIV has not yet been officially confirmed, it has been heavily hinted at in the past.

These guys have no clue do they? Releasing a Zelda game at launch isn't going to solve years of poor business decisions. I personally don't think the NX will do any better numbers than the Wii U did, and I haven't seen "N" do anything recently that would make me think otherwise.

Saying they will make up for lost Wii U sales doesn't make it so :shame:
NX coming out March 2017! So far No Advertise or Anything about NX. Nintendo waits for Sony & MS introduce PS4.5 and X1 1.5 then release INFO NX around August or September. BOOM Sony & MS in the face. lol

1. Only game we know is Zelda coming to NX

2. Mario Galaxy 3

3. New Donkey Kong

4. New Metroid Prime

5. Bayonetta 3

6. Mario Kart 9

7. Super Smash Bro. Ultimate Edition

8. Mario Party 11

That's a whole lot of ASSumptions right there.

All they are saying is that they expect to sell 1.6 million fewer Wii U units than they did last year, and that they plan for the NX to cover a large portion of that lost revenue.

Depending on the price point, the number of sales required might not actually be any higher than the WiiU's initial launch numbers.

The NX also needs a couple worthwhile third party launch titles to convince people to buy it.
fixed

They can't expect a console to only sell on the merits of first party games. The WII U was a perfect example of that.

Nintendo wants to go mobile but they can't afford to ditch AAA powerhouses like COD, Battlefield, FIFA, GTA & Fallout to replace them with Cut the Rope, Angry Birds Rio & Mobile Strike :whistle2:

Honestly, I wouldn't even mind 1st party only games if they where worth a damn. I can play Mario Kart DS, and have the same level of fun as the current game and save $40 bucks in the process. Same goes for the 2D Mario titles. They take years to deliver sub standard games like Star Fox. SF should have been made in 12 months(one & done), and then I could even forgive that games short comings.

But spending years to create things like Star Fox, Metroid force, or academy, or whatever that crap is called, when big studios can deliver pretty solid games on an annually basis for much better consoles. What "N" is doing, and bringing to market is a joke, especially for the asking price. $20-$30 dollars for their standard fare would also get more buyers through the door, but as it is, there just isn't much value in their consoles or the games being offered.

I can get Sonic Transformed Racing or Rayman Origins for next to nothing, and they are leaps and bounds above the latest and greatest MK & 2D Mario games.

Agree with chrislaustin.

It is probably just me, but I feel like when I play any of their new games, it is just a new coat of paint.  I don't feel like I'm playing a new version.   Maybe it has to do with their systems being underpowered, so it doesn't look that different.  I don't know.  But I feel they bank on nostalgia and their iconic characters which has suckered me for the most part.  However, after the Wii U which I waited a bit to purchase since I was only really interested in Xenoblade Chronicles X (which was personally my most disappointing game I've played) and some of their questionable business choices, I honestly am not having as much fun anymore with their first party titles.  And they have no third party support.

As bad as this sounds, I actually hope they just rehash the games on the NX, so I don't have to buy their system.  I'll just stick with their handhelds.  I own every major Nintendo system/handheld except the original Gameboy.  I just hope they don't bring a true sequel to Super Mario RPG or something to it.

They didn't ditch AAA, AAA ditched them

One of these things is not like the other. One of these things no longer represents the ethical & moral standards that adhere to Nintendo's new age business model based on FUN & SAFETY. :whistle2:

I'm starting to think we gamers as a whole are getting a lot more difficult to satisfy as time goes on.  Especially since all these Nintendo complaints can easily be said about other companies regarding their games as well (Call of Duty, Assassins Creed, Street Fighter, Fallout, etc...).

Makes me wonder if (and when) we're ever going to reach a point where no one cares about the new games and they just stop happening.

I also wonder about the general reaction to PS4.5 and XB1.5 when those come out. Will they be given more slack than NX because they are Sony and Microsoft?  Even though they will likely only bring new performance improvements whereas the NX is supposed to bring a 'new' gaming experience with completely different hardware. Guess we'll find out eventually.

Just me thinking out loud here.

Yet you guys eat up all the Neptunia games and other pretty meh niche games, though i'm harsh on them for being average cash grabs most of the time. Course I am pretty hard on a bunch of games.

Yeah and considering they are just new coats of paint, they are failing to realize their own potential by not releasing sequels like Super Mario 3D World 2 & 3.  That game was super long and they just did a disservice to themselves by not saving some of that content and releasing additional titles.

I do like Nintendo home console systems though.  Games like SMW3D, Mariokart, and Smash Brothers offer considerable value which I truly do appreciate as a consumer.  It is refreshing to have a company offer complete games for once where you feel like you're getting a complete experience without having to buy any DLC.  If I can get just 6+ games per system that offer solid exclusive experiences then I am fully satisfied with that generation.

They have so many other problems though.  Mostly their AAA development cycles, lack of third party support, and the complete failure of their Nintendo account system.  You can tell that the company is run by a bunch of stuffy old men.  Nintendo is the Cadillac of the gaming industry.  They haven't been able to adapt to the home console climate since the turn of the century. I really wish they didn't receive so much consumer support for their handhelds.  It has come at a great cost to the TV experience.

The Wii U just seems like a flagship status symbol at this point.  That it exists solely for public notoriety and brand awareness.  Much like operating a franchise store on Rodeo Drive in Hollywood, and just like having the Nintendo World Store in NYC.

This venturing into mobile could be their downfall as it cheapens their brand.  They just might cannibalize themselves when people no longer feel like buying $40 Mario 3DS games.

their hard core on introducing gimmicks as a selling point to overlook their overpriced and underperforming hardware, not even gonna budge for this one especially since the nx will be considerably less powerfull than current generations and the fact they still wont help or release things for western developers who will take a chance and only supporting the struggling japanese is sad and the rumor of something similart to a cell phone as a controller is disturbing in the fact they are trying to get new customers in japan who are cell phone gamers back in their market....well smarter customers dont buy new consoles day one anyway to not waist money paying to debug and test nintendo products. besides of being tired or we only getting black or white consoles over here is pissing me off, made a commitment to only buy better colored or limited edition consoles so i dont get burned since they look better and it pays off, got my xbox one last year when they released the halo edition one and it was one of the newer models with a ssd and look ps4 is coming out with a beefer one this year so it pays to wait, i just buy some games for new consoles so i have something for when i do

well that is true especially has more entitled generations come about, some of the complaints are the same for companies so depending on what they are i either stay away or deal with it, i know the ps4 coming out is to support their vr is because of the price will be hard to get enough customers early and i dont know anything about the (if its coming) new xb1 but assume its to support the occulus or something which will be the same problem, mine with nintendo (who mostly does this) is selling brightly colored mediocre 4 hour gameplay games for high prices, thats the biggest reason they lost so many in japan and everywhere else, i might rent the game but wont buy it paying full price on a game i can beat in 4-8 hours ur just not getting your moneys worth and when they try to say theirs 30-40 hours of gameplay and the factoring you going around grinding or collecting or replaying for a better time to make their game sound worth it is crap

I'd be more sympathetic toward Nintendo if I didn't know they were continuously looking to capitalize and profit on my brand loyalty by offering as many console iterations as possible.  Specs like the 8gb and 32gb Wii U hard drives are inexcusable.  They have also sold four iterations of the 3DS in as many years: the 3DS, 3DSXL, N3DSXL, N3DS.

Nintendo does make for an interesting case study though.

I'll stand up for Iffy games! Seriously. You do better. :) Anyways, opinions will always differ.

Edit: Btw, I'm playing MegaTagmension right now. if you didn't like Action U, I'd say stay away or wait for a sale. I liked it so I think it's fine. But anyways...

Definitely seems to be a trend. People tend to devour any niche Japanese game that comes over here. And I get being into that stuff and wanting to play those titles, but it doesn't mean we have to ignore faults or pretend that mediocre games are awesome. It's a double edged sword, though, because we want to encourage that market so we get more of them. But, by doing so, we are also sending a message that we don't actually care whether the games are good or not.

I think Nights of Azure is a really good recent example. It's got a known name behind it (in the niche world, at least) and a big, spendy CE, and it seems like a worthwhile game. Unfortunately, it's mediocre at best and not at all worth wasting time on. I feel like that describes an alarming number of the more niche titles we get. They end up being poorly made, questionably translated, and far from being a polished product.
