Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

I agree. The dungeons are excellent and varied. I'm talking about more the social link/school life thing. Guess it's not as memorable after 2 games with it. It's alright but feels a bit work man like to power through and keep raising your links/stats. It's aight though....I just think it's kind of tired, even though the links in this game feel a bit more fleshed out than the previous 2 games. Could all be better for sure.
Ditto that. Which is probably why I also think this:

So what you guys are saying is, SMT > Persona?
But all of the games are fun in general.

Eurogamer reporting Nintendo to release the SNES mini this Christmas. Probably adding to why they discontinued the NES classic.
Cool, this is great news if true. My favorite system - so this would be an instant purchase. Of course they will likely raise the price to $100 or some obscene amount like that. This would also explain why the NES Classic is being discontinued - if they are using the same resources for the SNES Classic.

Pricing it at $100 wouldn't be so bad if Nintendo increased the number of included games to 50-60. Based on the sheer number of classics from that era, that seems like a no-brainer to me.

I hope they add eShop support to the SNES mini and a longer cable. I know there's a way to add a lot of games to the NES Classic but I rather not run the rush to brick my console plus I like to support Nintendo.

what makes you think that nintendo providing so little releases for the other consoles will now change their mind? ur better importing a console since they have released 3-5x's in jp

Awesome. I will have to track down a Famicom version as well as NTSC.

I don't care so much about the price as much as I care that they have a really good selection of games included, just like last time. If it happens, it will definitely be closer to $100 msrp though.

I have my family's original SNES, as well as a SNES-slim that I picked up a year or two back. I also have a healthy selection of original cartridges for the SNES. All the same, I would love to see a SNES Classic show up sometime this year. Well-produced retro systems like this are quite nice. I managed to get my hands on a NES Classic, and it is actually quite keen. I can (and have) replicated its functionality using a raspberry Pi. But the slick retro package and ease-of-use does justify the NES Classic. As much as I like my NES Classic, the SNES will always be my personal favorite legacy system.

It's game speculation time! Here's a short list of my must-have titles for a SNES Classic.

Super Mario World

Super Metroid

Mega Man X

Act Raiser

F-Zero

I read a different article about this back in December (I think), but it was only based off rumors and speculation. The information that started the rumor was because the US Patent received a new patent claim from Nintendo for an item that either resembled an SNES or had a similar name (I believe it was the former), but since it was only a rumor I hadn't thought much of it.

Super Mario World

Super Metroid

Mega Man X

Act Raiser

F-Zero
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Mega Man X2

Mega Man X3

LoZ: A Link to the Past

Final Fantasy III (i.e., VI)

Earthbound

Secret of Mana

Star Fox

Super Castlevania IV

Super Mario RPG (unlikely)

Donkey Kong Country 1-3

Make it happen, Nintendo. PLEASE.

I don't see how there's any way they'll get FF or Chrono Trigger Squaresoft games on that thing.  Not when SquareEnix is still selling them for good money on PSN, iOS, and Steam.

I'm hoping that it will have:

-Super Metroid

-Super Mario RPG

-E.V.O. the Search for Eden

-Super Bomberman

-A Link to the Past

-Earthbound

-Secret of Mana

-Secret of Evermore

-Zombies Ate My Neighbors

-Final Fight

-Lufia 1-2

-Ogre Battle

-Donkey Kong Country 1-3

-Mega Man X 1-3

-Super PunchOut

-Actraiser

-Breath of Fire 1-2

-Tetris Attack

-The Legend of the Mystical Ninja

Looking at all those titles, the SNES really was the rise of console RPGs.  I didn't realize how dominant RPGs were on this system.  Squaresoft and Enix holds the rights to so many of them.  Nintendo really needs a licensing agreement with them for this system.  Just looking at the lists of SNES games there weren't as many non-RPG pantheon games as I thought.

I'm guessing both Mario World titles will be in it, and Super Mario All Stars too. Also something like Yoshi's Cookie...which I know I wouldn't want. I would want Contra 3. Any S-E stuff would rock like the already mentioned Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger (honestly not needed DS version is good enough), FF3(6). I know this may not be a popular opinion but I would maybe want Killer Instinct. Earthbound seems like a must as well.

Yeah...it's def going to be a bunch of Nintendo first party commissioned stuff like Pilotwings, F-Zero, Starfox, Mariokart, etc.   I really don't see how this goes down without the list of titles disappointing us.  Aside from just a few titles, the vast majority of the good games are third party.

I also think a lot of the SNES Nintendo stuff is dated, in a way, unlike a lot of other retro games.  This especially holds true for the N64 era.  So many tryhard 3D platformers that have very dated gameplay.

Most fanatics aren't going back to the original Street Figther II, Starfox, or SNES Mariokart to get their fix.

My two favorite SNES games are not only Squaresoft titles, they don't even have official English translations.

Well, Nintendo actually reached out and got a fair number of third-party games on the NES Classic. They actually got a lot more than I had expected. And companies like SquareEnix were on that list. They got Dragon Warrior as well as Final Fantasy on the NES Classic.

I think that it would be unrealistic to expect Final Fantasy III (aka VI) and Chrono Trigger on the SNES Classic. But I think seeing one of those games on it would be within the realm of possibility. They would want to have at least one major RPG, and those are the usual go-to candidates. If SquareEnix were feeling a little less generous, we'd probably see just Final Fantasy II (aka IV).

And the SNES has a deeper catalog of "timeless" games than the NES. SNES games age much better than NES games, so having multiple SNES Classic releases would be an easy sell. They could crank these out annually for three or four years without running out of viable titles.

They did, but it was a bulk of Konami titles and the rest were mostly one-offs.

The more I think about a possible SNES-classic the more I worry that the library could easily suck. I hope they're prepared to do 30+ games again and plenty of licensing.

I'm sensing a pattern here... Can't wait for the Switch Classic Edition!
gamecube classic is gonna be awesome. paper mario, fire emblem. 2 pokemon titles and that's just first party. oh I hope skies of arcadia is on there since its too damn expensive for me to buy a physical copy for.

If there's one title that's sticking out as an obvious candidate for Nintendo to pay up for, it's Super Mario RPG. If they could land deals for a couple of other big titles like Chrono Trigger, and The Secret of Mana, as well as get Super Metroid on there then the system would be an instant success.

The SNES was such an important and revolutionary system in terms of both storytelling and gameplay.  I firmly believe that CT and Super Metroid are the two best games of all time behind only FF6.  A Link to the Past is easily in the discussion as well.

Man, none of those are even the best games on the system, let alone of all time. They're good, sure, but Seiken Densetsu 3 and Bahamut Lagoon are the best the SNES had to offer.

I found Bahamut Lagoon to be pretty easy. I thought it was alright when it was released translated....just not my cup of tea. Looked awesome though haha. Seiken Densetsu 3 is just awesome though. Only thing that made it worse than SoM was that I don't 3 player was an option. Either that or I couldn't get it to work for the life of me at the time (many years ago).

Never was a huge fan of the SNES, and at that point in the '90s I lost most interest in Nintendo's first party titles. Only way I'd be interested in the SNES is if titles like Turtles in Time, Maximum Carnage, and The Avengers were included...and there's no way that's happening.

Cool, I look forward to not finding one.
Exactly. Nintendo will pull the same crap yet again, and these things will be near impossible to find.

Maybe Terranigma can finally get a US release.
fuck that game. One of the first games I've played where there's minimum levels for content. Couldn't pass a boss cause I wasn't high enough to do more than 1 damage, when it had like a thousand HP.

As for games, they can put Contra 3, Turtles in Time, and Mario World on it, and it'll sell out at $100+.

Agreed I disliked Terranigma a decent amount. I didn't like the fighting system, esp that worthless attack where you can attack a bunch of light attacks at once. It felt like a decent to below decent Zelda type game. Now a game I felt was awesome and pretty neat that was forgotten was Soulblazer. Now that was a pretty neat Zelda type game. I also didn't like Secret of Evermore much.....I just couldn't get into it and the magic system using ingredients was kind of clunky. I think I still beat the game, but don't remember much about it.

I'm cool with a "pure and wholesome" Asuka on the Switch. But let's get a "lewd and indecent" Homura for the PSVR. I love how the Senran Kagura franchise continues to expand and grow. It'll be interesting to see where they take it after Peach Beach Splash. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if a future title is similar to DOA Xtreme, ie filled with mini-games, as opposed to action-based gameplay.

the big misses on the NES mini were Super Dodgeball and River City Ransom imo.

that's the most weeb thing I've read in months. we didn't even get those games here.

Imagine if they made a fighter for Senran Kagura or like SK vs DOA. *Dreams*

If someone would just do a modern Soulblazer and Actraiser(only the first one though, not the shitty sequel)....sadly this world is unjust.
