Ok that is a lot of text and I am not reading all of that.  I am just going to assume you are all talking about lootboxes because that is all anybody is talking about.  The future will be games with almost all content gated by lootboxes, the games will have tons of DLC and expansions but you open lootboxes until you get the DLC you want.  You'll see a video on the store page of someone opening a lootbox and getting a huge expansion but you'll buy the $99.00 loot box pack and get nothing but cosmetic items.  And you will be fine with it because they eased you into the situation.  First a pinky by WB and then BOOM Ubisoft's entire arm is up there and you are just going along with it.  But at least it is October now and that means a lot of people are going to be murdered horribly on the teevee by various demons and such and we should all be thankful for that because the Yellowstone supervolcano isn't going to erupt by itself and that settles that.

I don't think the issue is optional content in itself, its the repetitivity (probably not a word) of that content.

Some optional fetch quests are alright, but when a game is saturated with them it detracts.

Every open world game has them, but when the majority of the optional quests are variations of 'Go into the forest and pick red berries' its disappointing.
Agreed.

EDIT:

People want content, then complain about it since it is filler.

How bout y’all that hate open world games with content filler make your own game?
See how long it takes you to make meaningful non-repetitive missions and such

-.-
I would need an army of dev's and tons of money.

And it would be freakin' marvelous.

Price glitch miss shaming:

Speaking of glitches, what happened with the Warframe DLC packs that had the glitch about 10 days ago? The dev was considering refunding all the purchases made during that period. Did he do that? Or is he still looking into it?

He said that they were letting them stand and those who got it should play the lottery.

Def got to keep it; though spending it is another story.

Hey, I've been out of the loop for a hella long time. What happened to Enhanced Steam? Was it replaced with something? Or is it just dead?

It's still working as we speak now. No and no. Did you mean Idlemaster?
Nope. I'm talking about ES. I originally got it as an add-on from Firefox. About a year ago, Firefox auto-disabled it, saying it was an unverified add-on or something. A couple of months after that, it was removed from my add-ons page. I cannot find it now when I go on to Firefox's add-ons page.

Still around, you can get it here: http://www.enhancedsteam.com/

Goes for $35-40 on ebay and you get Prey with it (AMD codes)
The only reason I did not get in on buying via ebay was thinking that the Season Pass for Wolfenstein might add to the single player game. So far, it looks like Wolfenstein has a lot of potential for story including playing other characters.

Preorders just get "Chapter Zero" of the DLC though, not the entire season pass.  Even if it's not included with the AMD keys (I suspect it will be), you'll probably wind up buying the season pass one way or the other if you're interested in the other stories.

You dont get the season pass with the CDKeys version. Its unknown yet if the pre-order DLC comes with the AMD version since they havent released the keys for the game yet. As Syntax mentioned, its very possible they will.

Prey is worthwhile on its own, but if you didnt want it or already had it, its easily sellable on its own and the key for that is already available.

The AMD deal is far and away the best deal if you want Wolfenstein. You either get two games or can sell Prey at a decent price to make Wolfenstein base even cheaper.

I do, but I wouldn't let it go for less than $10,000,0010

Wait a sec, what's this "Up to..." nonsense?
Taxes

I'm assuming it also depends upon how many people sign up for this. It could be 10 million to one person or 10 million split up among many people.

I suspect that's to cover their ass in case Trump is impeached but not removed from office like Clinton and Johnson.

(Whatever the case it's poorly worded for what I think they are really hoping to accomplish.)

I thought I had seen it all with the content+dlc vs. Non-content+dlc discussion, but I literally missed a content+game content vs non-content+game content discussion!

Here's my wall-o-text:

I have found that games usually have good story or good gameplay mechanics and rarely have both.  The games I usually play the most have good mechanics and the games with the best stories tend to be short.  The reason I played Homefront: TR so much was because I enjoyed the shooting so much and the guns and mods, etc.  That's why I would stick around for hours clearing out a sector of NorKs to finish an objective.  I didn't need it to finish the game, but at the same time, when I did it I wasn't thinking "this is great, but it would be so much better if they added some shitty story about these guys I'm trying to headshot."

I don't really know how that works with RPGs though.  I tend to see shooters as skill-based (to a degree at least) and I don't really understand RPGs.  They seem like you just play dress up and then either button smash or hope the RNG falls your way.  So I could see how that would get boring without story, but I just don't keep playing something if I don't find it enjoyable.

As fun as Homefront: TR was for an open-world FPS for me & was severely underrated by gamers and reviewers alike (especially for those who played it in a not-so-patched-up state) - it still attempted and tried to do story, character, dialogue, and cut-scenes...but was not that great at that stuff. At every turn it looked like it was about to go somewhere w/ story and character stuff...it then wrote off characters & killed characters you didn't get to know enough so you have trouble actually caring about them; yeah, just like GUN did.

So...in the end, for me, Homefront: TR never ends up getting put above other great open-world FPS's that were before it...such as Far Cry 3, STALKER SoC and STALKER: CoP. Homefront: TR has a few interesting twists on the open-world FPS genre (i.e. its setting of North Korea invading USA in an urban futuristic Philly and especially the gun-part swapping mechanics), but unfortunately not much more than that.

It has been $8 before for HF:TR Freedom Fighter Bundle and even HF:TR base was HB'ed....and I did spend 35 hours w/ the base-game - and it is easily worth that kind of $$. Heck, I thought it was worth the $18 or so I spent on from GMG, a bit back. It's a solid game that's now in a solid shape.

EDIT:

About RPG's: one of the most important elements of an RPG is usually story & character development. RPG's are really supposed to immerse the player into the game-world. story, and become the role of the character they are given or character they create - giving them plenty of reason for all the leveling-up, grinding, skill-earning, etc. Often, RPG's usually let the player make decisions, often having checks on your stats, skills and/or equipment for if you succeed or not on an attempted special choice/decision.

But, these days, RPG's aren't what they used to be, especially in AAA space. As now they are often pushing these games to be more ARPG (on the character-build itself) than RPG (the decision-making). This is really evident in games like Fallout 4, which has more different shades of Good for decisions and has less Evil and Neutral decisions than even Fallout 3 and especially New Vegas; and also Mass Effect: Andromeda. In Andromeda, a lot of Renegade decisions went out the window, in favor or more different shades of Good for decisions or just straight-up MMO side quests of find X this, get X that, go to X areas, etc etc.

RPG's are adding action-elements, and action-games are adding more RPG elements - and they're becoming too much alike. They're blurring the line of what they are, turning into these very alike hybrids. Many of these games are not really being masters of anything, TBH. They're turning out to be jacks of all trades, in which many are not living up to any sort of expectations in many instances - especially if they're sequels to previous titles that actually excelled at something.

Nothing371 said something before about how the "great" open world games meant that there was little reason to play "good" open world games.  Watching the Wolfenstein II trailer today, it occurred to me that great linear shooters like Wolfenstein, Doom and Metro meant that I really didn't need linearity from Far Cry, Watch Dogs or Mad Max.  Pretty much the opposite -- what those games offer is fun core game play that allows me to approach a fight from a bunch of different angles: snipe, sneak & knife, release the leopards, drive in and unload a .50cal truck-mounted gun, drive in with a car full of C4 and jump out before it goes boom, etc.  That they have umpteen-hundred map points to do shit in is what I want from them.

Fox mentioned HF:TR and, yeah, the plot was dumb but reducing the map wasn't going to make the story not-dumb.  I didn't even care that it was dumb because I was having fun shooting Norks and taking bases.  The HF:TR DLC was garbage mainly because it was linear and didn't benefit from being a corridor shooter.  Had they made a few more neighborhoods with multiple objectives, it would have been great.

"Blurring the lines between RPG and Action" is more due to consoles than anything else.  You're going to have to learn to live with it.  Or else, you know, play the plethora of "old school" style PC-oriented RPGs that have come out in the last five years that should give you what you want if you value conversation trees and point-based combat mechanics.

I don't know how Wolf II: TNC might turn out, but (surprisingly) Wolf: TNO did a pretty good job at the character development & story development for a shooter of this type. Let's hope that Wolf II: TNC doesn't forget what was one of the elements (of many) that made the previous game so damn good in the first place.

EDIT:

About Metro series, the first two were quite linear. Metro: Exodus is supposed to be semi open-world, having some linear missions and some open-world elements - probably somewhere along the lines of what Wolfenstein 2009 and RAGE tried. Hopefully, Metro: Ex doesn't sacrifice the linearity, narrative, and story-telling that made previous entries in the series so damn good.

I remember when Monolith was great at making their action games also tell great stories; and also have great dialogue, & characters. Namely, I'm talking FPS's like FEAR 1 & 2; and NOLF 1 & 2.

It's a shame to have heard the stuff 'Lith was once so good at in those games just sounds so lacking in SoM and SoW.

Could you do better?

Actually, that would be a dream of mine.

Get me ridiculous amounts of money (i.e. $200 million) and I'd love to get a team together. I'd love to be Creative Director and be at the helm for the story & character stuff.

Have you played EITHER of them? "Sounds" to me like you haven't played either. That's the shame here. You're levying criticism based on hearsay and no first hand knowledge of your own.

Shadow of War has its shortcomings (mostly story related) but Shadow of Mordor is bonafide great and the mechanics in both are outstanding. SoW is no slouch, but there's more to criticize.

Monolith = still good.

@Arch

Nope, I have not played them. I did say I "have heard", didn't I? Could've swore I did.

Pretty much, I have very little interest at this very moment time at UbiSoft AC-style open-world games that also take on Batman Arkham combat (tired of it - especially after Batman games, Mad Max, Sleeping Dogs and also both ACU & ACS implementing similar combat advances). Maybe at a later date, but not anytime soon will I likely touch even SoM (which I do own) - nevermind SoW.

And you've pretty much also confirmed what I've heard & read about SoW on the story stuff. Thanks.

Sometime this fall I am upgrading at least my video card but I am wondering if it might be time to upgrade my processor while I am at it.  Using an i7-4770k at the moment so going to something like a i7-7700k would also mean going from DDR3 to DDR4 memory and upgrading my mobo.  Wondering if anyone more up-to-date on tech has any thoughts on waiting for something else to come out or going for a different cpu or whatever.

EDIT:  I failed to mention that with pretty nice cooling (honestly I would have to go liquid I think to improve it) my 4770 does not like to be overlcocked, so keep that in mind.  I know a lot of people run them at 4.5 without issue but... eh this  one says no.

MysterD is the guy who posts to Craigslist saying "Got awesome idea for a comic book, just need artist, writer, letterer, colorist and publisher. You will get great exposure."

I'd rather write a short story, novella, or actual novel than say an actual comic book.

I'm not a great drawer, TBH.

Why would people go through the trouble of actually playing a game when some clown on YouTube can tell them how to feel about a game? They can also go to all those awesome sites with upstanding gaming "journalists" to provide an accurate representation of the game. And surely those folks wouldn't fan the flames of rage to get more clicks.

I would've played SoM, if I could actually get into. After doing numerous open-world UbiSoft-style games and WB Arkham games - yeah, SoM wasn't doing it for me. So, I ditched it...for now.

In due time, I'll get to it...just like many other AAA titles, sitting in my backlog (i.e. MGSV: TPP Definitive, Witcher 3, etc etc).

I'm right now in the midst of something already: Quantum Break.

EDIT:

Bah is one fewer character. Point, set, match.
Yeah, I should've thought of "BAH" at that moment. But, I didn't.

I read some pc gamer article that said the new i5 is the gaming processor to get. Read that.
