Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.

So from what I understand reviewers were forced to use the Xbox One X for reviews of AC: Origins yet Metacritic still accounts for the vast majority of reviews on PS4. Guess it’s just their flawed formula at work.

Am disappointed to hear that there’s still texture pop-in and occasional frame rate issues on the X. Hope there’s a patch.
Are you sure? I’ve seen reviews done on the PS4, not the Xbox

Maybe I’m wrong, but this paragraph on Polygon made it sound like it may have been a condition for review to use the X:

“It is necessary for me to mention that this review is based on the Xbox One X version of Assassin’s Creed Origins. Ubisoft insisted on only allowing me to play this one version as a condition of playing the game, pre-release. And so I’m in the awkward position of critiquing a piece of software made for a console that will not exist as a consumer product for another few weeks.

Ubisoft wants us to see the world it has created in the best possible light. But if you are not planning on buying an Xbox One X, you should read this review with the necessary caveats. I have not played this game on any console that you (or I) actually own.”

Don’t know if this was applied universally but even the IGN reviewer mentioned that even on the X there were some technical issues but that review is listed under PS4 on Metacritic.

I would doubt that Ubisoft would force the issue with sites that are PS centric. Those sites probably would have no reason to even have an X for reviewing purposes.

Edit: just looked at GamesRadar+, another one that is listed under PS4, but the review states:

“playing on Xbox One X, the visuals are nothing short of spectacular”

Don’t know. Sure there is a mix but don’t think Metacritic does a good job categorizing. Another reason why OpenCritic is better overall.

With all the ME talk I forgot to mention I'd obtained cheap copies of the first 3 games (ME1 for $2 shipped on Amazon, in perfect condition!) after buying DLC earlier this month.

Playing ME1 and using the Mako gives me a newfound appreciation for Andromeda and the Nomad, which controls wonderfully and has great physics. The Mako by comparison feels like it's tires are made out of banana peels and constantly driving in mud.
That's funny, like going from a modern sedan to a model T. The Mako makes up for it by being able to drive up very steep mountains lol.

Also if you've only driven the UNSC M12 FAV Warthog, the controls are about normal.

It DOES make me bitter the Nomad never got any offensive capabilities. But there's a story behind that...

Word is, the benefactors for the Andromeda Project knew they'd need to be able to explore new worlds and defend themselves. They hired the Asari to improve the design of the Mako, and they made an incredibly resilient vehicle for all manner of terrain.

Unfortunately, between expenses and the power required for the shields, there wasn't anything left over for weapons.

In the end, the Asari gave them Justicar.

:D

I typed that long pun out to my ex when she was getting hyped for Andromeda and eating up any info she could find. The response to my terrible joke was worth it.

Finished south park last night. Which is good since I'm getting AC and Mario today and wouldn't want it in my backlog.

I really liked it and had fun with it. Towards the end it started to feel like it was dragging and making me use my special abilities just to take up more time, which wouldn't be a problem if the abilities were just a quick button press but they're a few series of multiple presses. It was also very easy; playing on the hardest difficulty I died less than 10 times and half of those were from me testing to see if certain parts of the environment could kill me. It makes me want to go back and replay stick of truth, but that will have to be in the backlog for a bit.

I listen to tons of podcasts and a couple of them have stated they were playing on Xbox One X development kits not even the actual retail hardware. All the big sites were forced to review the game at a "review event". I think it was the IGN xbox one that stated they felt like some of the issues were actually caused by playing it on these development kits. I can't recall the specifics but there was some issue the person pointed out that this was something that was consistent with playing on dev kits in the past.

edit: and that was supposed to be for your other post about "pop up issues"

Sure. I hope you’re right. X should be able to handle pretty everything thrown at it. So even if it still has those issues on the retail units, I’d say it’s a Ubisoft issue — not the X.

so...what do we think of this? 6 months, unlimited swapping of preowned games, and you keep the last game. Must be a PowerUp Rewards member.

I only read the Eurogamer review and they had reviewed it on the PS4. They mentioned in their Xbox One X post/unbox that they were under embargo regarding the Xbox reviews.

I think they’re feeling the heat from Game Pass. Certainly an interesting value proposition, especially if you can get a new-ish game for that last game. Question is, will you use enough of it in the interim, and do you feel lucky with that last game?

Is this true? Sounds pretty good if you can rent as many as you can and keep the last game. Can you stay with a recent release that’s preowned?

It makes me think Gamestop is getting more desperate, and that this will make it harder to find the big games used. People that buy games and trade them back in within a month or so will be all over it, and it seems like it could cost GS more than just the normal selling of games would. Those heavy consumers will likely buy less, and people wanting to buy used copies of say, Assassin's Creed or Monster Hunter, will likely have to settle for new, meaning Gamestop makes way less from them. They must hope that your rentals will make you want to buy the games while your subscription is still going.

As a service it does sound good, as long as you can find something you want to play each time you trade it back. Basically $12 a month for unlimited rentals blows everything else out of the water as far as I can tell, including stuff like GamePass since it likely has no restrictions. Slightly cheaper if you already have the $15 Pro Pass too. The ad shows that, for now at least, it's a limited time offer, you have to start it by January 31st.

Seems like a pretty crazy value. Beats Gamefly if you can walk into any GS and grab any preowned game off the shelf...

When does this begin? January 1st? Or is it available already?

Where are you getting $12 from? It's $10 a month - 6 months for $60. (What makes you say it's a bit cheaper if you have Gamestop's Pro membership? I don't see that anywhere.) It is leagues better than Xbox Game Pass since you can play any game, and the last game you keep subsidizes the cost.

Gamepass has the benefit of being a monthly commitment, and codes for a month-long sub are all over the internet for less than $10. So the appeal is there, and there's something to be said for the convenience of what are essentially digital rentals. I see this way more as competing with Gamefly than Gamepass or PS Now.

Much greater value for people who own more than one system, too. If you have the time to take advantage of it, you could play everything you want and spend very little. They're probably banking on people keeping a game for a long period of time or forgetting to exchange them, but there'll be plenty who plow through everything and swap a game every 3-4 days. The fact you get to keep the last one really just means you purchase a game 6 months in advance and get to rent anything you want in the interim, assuming copies are available when you want it.

I almost have to wonder if this is even real. Seems like it’s wayyy too good of a deal to be true.

That said, it would probably be hell to try to get anything current. It takes a while to even find used copies of the big games. And with this, they’d be gone 99% of the time. You’d be stuck renting the ages old crap.

There also wouldn’t be much lett to buy used (not that I do now anyway).

Sounds great but, in practice, maybe not so much.

The last game I "keep" Will be whatever game has the highest trade value when my 6 months is up, or nearly up. Timed right, with an appropriate promo, could get back $30 (minimum) to $50+ of the program fee, making that 6 months of rentals cost $10 to $30. I wonder if they limit you to borrowing from the store at which you enroll, but I doubt it.

This is how you do it. You should be able to get the last game has one you can trade back for at least 25 or 30 bucks. He

Gifting games is now out for Alpha preview members. Here are the details from the update thread:

  • Users can gift select Xbox One games, downloadable content (DLC), and subscriptions (Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass)
  • Gifting of “durable” game DLC (map packs, weapon skins, etc.) is supported, but the gifting of “consumable” game DLC (virtual currency, etc.) is not supported.
  • When a particular item is discounted, users are allowed to send two (2) gifts of that item every fourteen (14) days. The 14-day clock starts once the first copy is purchased at discount. Once the limit for that item is reached, users will not be able to purchase that item again as a gift until the 14-day period is over, even if the product is no longer discounted.
  • Users are allowed to send ten (10) total gifts at discount every 14 days. There are no limits on items that are at full price.
  • Xbox 360 backward compatible games and consumable DLC (such as virtual currency) are not eligible for gifting.
  • Pre-ordered games and pre-ordered durable DLC are not eligible for gifting.
  • Digital codes can only be redeemed in the country/region where they were purchased.

I know this might seem like a simple/dumb question, but what do they mean by a "discounted" item?

For example, if a game is part of the weekly sales and discounted by 50%, does it mean we can only gift 2 copies of that game?

OR does "discounted" not include the weekly sales (we can gift as many of those as we want) and actually refer to the discounted prices we'd get from being EA Access/Game Pass members?

OR is it both? And I guess a related question is, can we gift games at the EA Access/Game Pass discounted prices?

I would imagine based on the screenshots we've seen that Gold/EA/GP discounts are ineligible.

Ah, I didn't realize there were screenshots. Just looked it up. Thanks for clarifying. So if even Gold discounts are not eligible, then I guess they're only referring to the silver weekly discounts. Meh. That's very limiting. I'm not gifting something at full price. I'd rather send them a MS pt card and have them buy it on sale.

Lol, wtf, Xbox Design Labs controller stopped working on me, purchased it this year in April. Microsoft's site tells me I need to register my device if I want to go through the warranty controller replacement process. Ok, need to find SN & register device - where the site tells you to look at your Xbox 360, no joke you'll have the Xbox One selected in the drop down menu and it's got a picture of a Xbox 360, E or S I think, and the SN is on the side with the box that says Xbox 360 (facepalm) - and it says out of warranty. I'm like I know, I'm trying to do the controller exchange thing. No instructions or anything but I decide to click on the Xbox One device that says out of warranty and then jumbled up in a few other drop down menus I finally get the option to select Xbox Design Labs Customized Controller. Need to get the PID number on the thing (like the controller's SN), ok, got that, next. OK, now it's asking for personal info, Step 1 of 5 lol, well shit ok fill in the form hit next...

There are no service offers associated with selected problem/accessory type.
WTF!?

I mean I could try all this over the phone but I did all that & I'm like f that.

I went back to my Xbox One S white controller, works well but does feel a bit different in the sticks. Sometimes I'll hop over things or move too much in a menu lol.

Glad to see the gifting is finally there. That said, The Gifted, the X-Men like, TV show has started off fairly well imo.

First non newb to reply to this message can have my Twitch Prime South Park Fractured But Whole Super Streamer Pack for the X1. Only take it if you're gonna use it, please.

I won't use it. I watched about 10 minutes of a South Park episode 10 years ago and didn't think it was that funny.

Code includes:

· $1.75 in starting cash — That may not seem like much but when you’re 10 years old, you can make that go a long way. As a tip, check out the costume pieces Bebe is selling!

· Crafting Materials — We are also starting you with some extra crafting materials which should help in building your first Artifacts or Consumables. Find the taco shop on Main Street for a sweet stash of recipes.

· Streamer Superhero Costume Pieces! Wear this exclusive purple costume designed for the tech-savvy hero. You can mix and match those pieces with other costume pieces to make a streamer hero all your own.

That’s good news. Ybarra’s screenshots only confirmed Game Pass discounts don’t work, but I figured that would extend to other subscription-based discounts. Happy to see that’s not the case.

FYI, new punch card for Assassin's Creed: Buy AC: Origins digitally and do two other activities (AC:O search and quiz) on Bing for 6,000 points.

Screw the game gifting feature.  You guys missed the most important part about the upcoming Xbox update:  "We’ve heard your feedback! Games with no unlocked achievements can now be hidden from the personal and public view of your profile."   ;)

Opinion....grab the AE of Dead Rising 3 and sell the disk at GS for $3? I don't have the DLC, and have no idea if the DLC is worth $5....
yes

unless you want to be like some others around here and wait for gwg as they think it's coming soon
