Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

I liked nights of azure, it was a fun game to play. I enjoyed collecting and leveling up my monsters to fight with me.
It's a simple action jrpg. It's not open world. Just a somewhat linear level structure of multiple stages which I liked.

Today's Fanatical Star Deal is SAO: Hollow Realization for $27.49

Still too high for me to bite, but in case someone wants it.

Rose/Yomawari are good pickups, though if you don't already have HTOLniq, you should nab the bundle that includes that and Yomawari.
Didn't notice there was a bundle. I have Rose already but was looking to get the older ones. The bundle is the same as getting them separately though.

I hope the new Sakura Wars game is for console and not mobile. And on PS4/Switch
And on PC please. I really hope we get Galgun 2 and Valkyria chronicles 4 PC announcements soon.

The Vita version of Nights of Azure is the one I played, did not finish it due to the pixelated graphics, but I really like the setting and characters.

Turns out I was wrong. The bundle is actually both games in one file. So it's a single skittle on your home screen, and you can't download/delete one without the other. If I'd known I probably would have bought them separately.

When Gust went all in on the PS4, they lost the PS3 version that could be used as a base for a port to the VIta. It's not just Nights of Azure but anything post-Atelier Sophie.

Sorry, I didn't know it was going to be a single file myself. I've only played htoLNIQ standalone since I have it physically for my vita. Bright side is it forces to to play both one after the other? The games are related so...yea 😅

I know a lot of people here are looking forward to Yakuza 6. It doesn't seem like most got the full game free via the 'demo' about a month ago. Even if you did though, you should still buy the game. Other than that you've got God of War and those Nintendo Labo cardboard games. I wonder how the Labo will be received long term beyond 'interesting and creative' honestly.

Other stuff that released without warning last week or I overlooked it (Assume PC unless otherwise noted):
- Lobotomy Corporation (Simulation)
- Glory of the Self-Styled Diehard girl (Visual Novel)
- Dead In Vinland (SRPG / Survival / Management)

Looks like their will also be a physical Switch version of Wild Guns Reloaded. Currently only listed at Gamestop, but Amazon is supposed to be selling them too, eventually.

I would have preferred them to be remade with whatever Engine they used for Shenmue 3 than a remaster especially since it's an earlier 3D game.
Did you watch the footage? It looks more like a maybe 4k port that's untouched otherwise. I'm leery.

Also I liked Nights of Azure a fair bit. Got the plat on PS4. Graphics, settting, and soundtrack are definitely the higher points. Combat is repetitive and the plat is pretty grindy due to a poor quest system and getting to max level (if you care about plats.) I can't recommend it at the sale price at all, but I do suggest giving it a try through a cheaper sale or some alternative (Gamefly or whatever.)

In case anyone was on the fence between the "Essence of Art" and "After Hours" editions of Yakuza 6, know that the Essence of Art package is a bit like the Tomb Raider 20 year celebration edition for PS4 which is a small art book that doubles as a DVD holder. Not a fan of those so I will stick with my After Hours edition.

Man is Ys VIII getting blasted in reviews on Steam. It's at a 23% positive rating currently. After all the delays, they really seem to have screwed up a few things pretty badly. It looks to be a bit worse than Koei Tecmo PC releases in its current state.

Forgot it was releasing yesterday since they never updated the product page prior to release with the release date and I didn't remember the specific date they were releasing it.

Yeah at this point I don't see myself bothering with Ys VIII until it hits sub-$10 or makes it into a Humble Bundle or something.

I was already annoyed by all the delays for the PC version, but for it to be such a train-wreck of a port just solidifies it as not worth supporting anytime soon.

Atelier Lydie and Suelle DLC is now out.

Season Pass $79.99 (if you held on to the Farcry 5 coupon it's about $68 after tax.)
