I imagine the discs will be used to authenticate and then run emulated digital copies as they are testing games one by one for compatibility. They may only need "wrapper" around the original content and therefore still pull content off the disc but it's not clear.
I don't understand how they decided to emulate the PS4 instead of just building it into the hardware more appropriately. I'm not too tech savvy, but it seems like this decision to make PS4 backwards compatible should have been in consideration for awhile which means it should have been planned as part of the hardware. Maybe I don't understand how these things work, but I thought this was the point of x86 architecture anyway, blah, blah, blah.

Is Sony going to have to learn the lessons of Xbox One and what they did for backwards compatibility all over again instead of seeing Xbox's issues for the last several years and building it in?

Does anyone else find it funny to hear Cerny talking about all this high tech 3D positional audio yet my PS4 Pro drowns out any sound coming from my speakers? Maybe if I play a game about jet engines then the PS4 Pro will be considered as if you were really in the game!
The talk also did address that the PS5 has a new cooling solution that was supposed to be better and quieter, though they haven't showed what it is yet.

This is speculation on my part, but I wonder if part of the problem is that Sony does not have as robust of a set of APIs as Microsoft, and is letting developers hit the hardware more directly on the PS4. This is good for performance, but it sucks if you want to maintain compatibility going forward.

If you picked up Terminator Resistance for $15.99, worth it IMO.  Platinumed it the other night, and also banged both chicks who ended up dying in the end lol.

It's really sad that after what was supposed to be a "deep dive" presentation that we are left with more questions than answers but here is my best guess. I think that all of the PS4 games will be or at least should be backwards compatible because of the x86 architecture but because of the boosted and variable frequency of the PS5 that it might break the physics in certain PS4 games which are not expecting to run at such high frequencies the same way that boost mode in PS4 Pro broke certain PS4 games until they were patched. Sony prioritizing the 100 most played games first makes the most sense as those are the games people are playing the most... duh! So this is not to say that PS4 games won't work on PS5, just that they might not work properly so each game will need to be tested. Hope this makes sense.

Keep in mind that people are mistakenly comparing the released PS5 specs to the XSX which is MS flagship console when in reality people should be comparing the XSX to the PS5 Pro which has not been revealed yet and could likely come out in 2021/22. Let's hope that Xbox didn't blow their load too early as Sony could very well release a PS5 Pro with an upgraded Big Navi GPU in the future.

I started this generation with an Xbox One S and a PS4 Pro. To me the difference was very clear and very disappointing with many xbox titles doing only 900p or even 720p in certain games. Next gen will be very different with both next gen consoles being capable of hitting 4k/60fps at which point how much better can a PS5 Pro be and what will it offer than can justify it's price premium?

If you've played Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and had the game just stop you for a second or two as you head into a new area, that's the game failing to hide that loading of assets and just straight up stopping you so it can get those things in before you get to that area. The Mass Effect elevator? Gone. MGS3's ladder? Gone. Slow walk-and-talk sequences? Gone. Tight corridors your character has to squeeze through? Gone. Kenny, Shaq, and EJ talking about the match-up or whatever random thing they're talking about before you can play your NBA 2K game? Gone. Maybe that five minute loading screen before GTAV will be gone, but who knows. To be specific, that doesn't mean they can't do that stuff, but it'll be for story purposes and not hiding loads because they can stream data in almost as fast as it's needed without a lot of redundancy to make frequently-used data accessible in almost every part of the hard drive disk for any situation you might be in. It literally frees up devs to not have to design levels and areas with arbitrary structures and obstacles to slow down your ability to get around the world and play the content you want.
And then in a few years when the open world fad has died, nobody will care.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I have a stupid fast SSD in my PC and the short load times are nice, but in general it just doesn’t make much of a difference to me if my game takes 5 or 30 seconds to load. I just start looking at my phone regardless.

This makes no sense. Why would we compare a console releasing this holiday to a vaporware console that might come out in a few years?

Reading all the tweets from game devs talking about the PS5 and the way it changes the way they will make games is very interesting. I most likely will get both next gen consoles but PS5 first and wait for a drop on the XSX since I just got my X1X.

Sony's tech seems game changing, but the problem is games will likely have to be built from the ground up to utilize it.  Which means only Sony first party games will utilize it.  Sony has probably only released a dozen or so games for the PS4 so that isn't going to be many games that actually take full advantage of the tech.  Speculation of course.

Because we know that a PS5 Pro is coming so up to you if you want the base model now or wait for the Pro. As for PS5 vs XSX, given the difference in power it's likely that the PS5 will cost $100-$200 less than the XSX. Given that both will perform similarly which console do you think most consumers will go for? The cheaper one or the more expensive one? The one with more games or the one with less games?

theres always something "coming". i agree with the above poster that they're just rumors for a ps5 pro but have you thought about if before the ps5 pro comes out there are rumors about a ps5 pro plus thats gonna come out. you've got to commit at some point.

Yes it's like PC. Do you upgrade now or wait for the next greatest CPU/GPU. It just depends on your needs and budget.

My point is that I don't think the PS5 was meant to compete with the XSX in power. They probably boosted the frequency of the PS5 at the last minute which was originally going to be aroung 9.5TF in response to MS revealing their specs. The PS5 will be cheaper. If you have the money to buy the console of your choosing at launch then buy it. I don't have a dog in this fight. I usually end up buying both at some point during the generation.

3rd versions are take it or leave it. I prefer the slims for 3 and 4 over the super slim and pro for 3 and 4. Hell I still have the phat for the ps3. It always seems to be what does it add vs what does it take away. I'll more than likely get the ps5 slim when it goes on sale like I did with the ps4 slim.

All of this virtual dick measuring was silly back for PS4/XB1 and it is silly now. I remember back at the beginning of the gen all the Sony Fanboys couldn't stop talking about 1080p vs. 900p being the end all measurement of a console. Then XB1X came out and suddenly it wasn't about tech specs and resolution anymore, it's the games that matter! This sort of thing out of a Sony exclusive developer is just an extension of that, always moving the goalposts. If the PS5 was 15 teraflops, then teraflops would be the most important thing. But it is less, so other things are more important to the same people.

In a world of the vast majority of games being multi-console, raw power does matter more than unique console features. If you don't believe that look into how the XB1's RAM architecture and Sony's Cell architecture worked out for them in the end. Unless a unique feature can be implemented seamlessly, don't expect it to be used much except on the exclusives.

Not load times. Loading of assets into the game while you're playing to keep it a smooth experience. Games are designed around those bottlenecks and they won't have to do that anymore. SSD on PC is nothing like what the consoles are doing. Completely changes what games can do.

What intelligent, worthwhile, and insightful replies. You really showed them!
All I did was show some tweets from devs, saying why I was excited for PS5 in a PS forum. I even said I was buying both consoles. These guys are the ones bringing up all the stuff about XSX .

I think Sony explained it pretty well that raw numbers aren't always the best measure of what a dedicated game system can do. But I would buy it no matter what for the games alone.

Just sayin' the same guys that used to make a HUGE deal over 900p vs 1080p are the ones that are making this argument.

Convenient how raw power becomes irrelevant when they no longer hold that crown, huh? Where are all of those Antonio Banderas GIFs these days?

Neither new console is going to be "revolutionary", let alone a year from now.

The raw power doesn’t matter is kind of irrelevant as of the 3 previous console generations in which Microsoft has taken on Sony they have had the more powerful console with the og Xbox and the one X and both times they were outsold by the weaker Sony console as it came down to how good the games that came out.

That is my point. It really isn't a big deal. I'm just pointing out how the fanboys adjust how important the relative power gap is only when they are in the lead, if they aren't then it is always something else. In this case, teraflops aren't important, it's that "revolutionary" file access, or better said as "something they think Sony does better". If Sony had more teraflops, then that would be the most important thing.

Just like how the 1080p thing was so important, until the X came out and regularly has the higher resolutions compared to the Pro. Then suddenly resolution wasn't a big deal. The truth was it never was a huge deal. Was Arkham Knight a little crisper on PS4, sure but it was still great on XB1.

I'm sure both the consoles will be pretty great, a few teraflops or new data streaming really isn't going to make one that much better to the point where it is the clear one to own. The only real winning path for a gamer is to eventually have them both.

Ya that's not really a fair comparison at all. PS2 vs OG Xbox. Playstation already had the advantage of brand recognition plus PS2 basically had a 10+ year life cycle where as the OG Xbox only had a ~4 year life cycle but they still managed to put out some really great games in those 4 or so years. This generation was a well documented disaster with MS basically shooting themselves in the foot and handing it on a silver platter to Sony before it even started. Actually it was Playstation that started this gen with the more powerful hardware and if I'm not mistaken X1X has outsold the PS4 Pro the last time I checked. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. But MS has proven that they are more than capable of winning a generation if they can manage to get off to a good start which it looks like they already are so expect next gen to be much closer than it was this gen.

It is a fair comparison, the og Xbox was a more powerful console, and as you said Microsoft screwed themselves this generation like Sony did last generation, no excuses. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Xbox one X has outsold the PS4 Pro it has had frequent discounts since it was released while Sony has not had to do that.

I can tell how popular a sale is by how much other debate there is. To me I just want to play games and I like Sony brands more so I will get  a PS5. Now the big question is when, which on launch is very unlikely for me so far unless there is a killer exclusive, but honestly who knows. We got so little information other than some specs for both. On another note man Mega Man Zero is punishing. I really honestly don't like it that much. It is very hard and the controls are kind of weird. I'm so glad they put the checkpoint node things, because without those I would have rage quitted and went on to the sequel already. Also yeah big March sale has nothing for me.

Yeah, the first couple are especially unfriendly, take liberal use of the Casual mode - there is no shame in that. Also use the option that gives you more restart points. It doesn't make the game a cakewalk, by the way, just a great deal more enjoyable unless you are already a hardcore fan of the game. I could never get into the DS version of the collection because they didn't have these features.

You also probably want to remap the controls, the dash, fire and jump are not the best choices for location. They just aren't comfortable to use that way, and most reviews pointed that out. Remap them!

And waiting for a must have exclusive is wise. This gen I picked up the XB1 the second year to join the generation, but didn't get my PS4 until Bloodborne - being a Souls fan that was a must have. It was the only PS4 game I had for quite a while afterwards. Most people forget the PS4 exclusive list wasn't very good until about halfway through the generation. I remember that one E3 where pretty much the entire PS4 lineup for the year were cross platform games, everything else was over a year out. Even the big ones like Street Fighter V and No Man's Sky were disappointing when they came out (but both improved). It wasn't until Uncharted 4 that the PS4 exclusive game really amped up.

Console war shit is so boring and this is coming from someone who really got into it back in 2013 on this site and others and I ended up buying both machines anyway.

The PS4 Pro is 2 TF less than the X1X yet you don't even see comparison videos because the difference is so negligible that it isn't even worth doing especially thanks to tricks like checkerboard rendering etc.  The difference between PS4 and X1 was 33%.  PS4 Pro and X1X 20%. PS5 XSX 15%.  Just not goiing to be enough to worry about.  I'm buying a series X for game pass and a PS5 for exclusives so I hope both machines are stellar.

One thing is for sure, there are far bigger issues to worry about right now than who's plastic box does it better.  Though it will still be interesting to see how both these machines fare in the real world.

There hasn’t been a revolutionary games console since the 5th generation added 3D polygon hardware support. Everything since then has been a pretty normal upgrade for graphical fidelity and/or speed, a gimmick, or treated like a gimmick by developers and audiences alike in spite of having the potential to be revolutionary (mostly thinking of the dual screens concept of the Wii U—it went nowhere, but there was a small possibility it might have been a game changer with better development and a warmer reception). Ultimately I think we’ll find this generation is just going to be more of the same performance improvements.

Unless you’re counting controller design, then I guess kinda sorta the PS2 for essentially standardizing gamepad layout (a d-pad, two analog sticks, four face buttons in a diamond pattern, four shoulder buttons, and start and select) to the modern day.

(Yes, other consoles had seen this or similar designs previously, notably the original dual shock for PS1, but they were never launch inclusions to my knowledge till the PS2.)

If we include portables, it gets slightly more recent—the GBA SP for its backlight (RIP Game Gear) and clamshell design, the DS for its two screens and six-button controls, and the PSP for its analog input and bringing portables a bit closer to contemporary home console specs. The PS Vita never caught on enough for its dual analog sticks on a portable to be considered revolutionary, I’d say, and the Switch is too large and unwieldy to be considered a real portable in my mind. It’d be nice if its ability to both travel and connect to a TV caught on, though, the lack of video out was always one of the sticking points for me on buying a Vita.

No, SSD on PC is exactly what the consoles are trying to do, it’s just that devs tend to design with consoles in mind, which has always been the limiting factor on AAA design on PC (well, not always, but probably since around the 6th gen at least). My comparison of my PC is specifically regarding obvious load screens; I don’t feel like the hidden loading you seem so excited about losing is really a significant factor outside open world games.

And those hidden load times are exactly what I’m talking about when I say when the open world fad dies off, nobody will care. In more linear games, pauses to load are significantly rarer and have cleaner breaking points that don’t really necessitate hidden loading. Again, for that kind of game, shorter load times are nice, but I’ve never seen them as a huge deal. It’ll be nice when flash memory becomes standard again like in the pre-optical disc days, but it’s hardly a game changer.

Open world fad?
As I explained in a previous post, I think the time when developers stop trying to shove open worlds into every IP they can is probably coming this generation. I’m not saying Elder Scrolls or GTA is going to disappear, but I feel like the community is starting to get tired of unfocused, Ubisoft-style open world design being shoehorned into every other AAA release.

Shadow of the Beast at $2 is honestly the best deal I saw.

Are any of the PS2 ports worth it at the current sale price?

Speaking of, be funny and sad if dynasty warriors on ps5/xsx still have all those issues they always have. That'll basically prove the devs are the problem.
