Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Speaking of FOMO, I bought some FF MTG cards today. I haven't done that in over 20 years.

Was fun and the cards look great, but man, it's expensive. Seventy bucks for a collector's booster? I guess old man me wants my $2.85 booster packs from yore.

Neat set to collect. Won't play it, but I'll get the FFX cards to display

I've been trying to buy some of the... more "collectors edition" sets I guess (I dunno what they're called) and jesus, it's flat out impossible. And then I saw the after market prices and I guess I know why.

Also, I'm the opposite- Blitzball was dope, I loved it but didn't care for most of FFX... found it kinda whiny.

I found some at my local shop, but they're in tight with a bigger distributor. As he was selling stuff while I was there, he got three more cars in stock.

Supposedly they're going to run this series for quite some time as long as it sells. So as long as you're not after the collector's packs, it'll be available.

BTW, $70 for a pack of cards?!

I got some FF magic cards today as well. Looking forward to going through them tomorrow :D.
The collector packs are supposed to be ~$40 I believe, so if you're seeing $70+ it's just marked up at a store or someone reselling it

What if blitzball is actually the landmine Tidus kicks when he is sad cause Yuna dumped him so he kicks what looks like a blitzball but it’s actually a landmine then he blows up and dies in front of her?

Apparantly in FFX-2 Creature Creator fiend tales there is a story of a kid named, wait for it, Bomb. Bomb wanted to become a blitzball player with his friend when they grew up. Bomb ends up dying and in a cutscene ghost visits his friend after learning he hasn’t been practicing since his death and convinces his friend to practice again by becoming a Blitzball.

I think the NPCs name is bomb, it is a blitzball and it eventually goes back in time to blow up Tidus after Yuna dumps him for someone else, maybe blitzball?

Yeah, unfortunately I'm a sucker for collectors stuff so... been trying to get the collectors editions but I'm not an MTG person by any means so I can prob live.

There are blitzball cards, yes. I'm too out of touch with the children to know the reference.

Also, blitzball sucks. Worst part of FFX.
I put about 30 hours into that. It only sucks till you can dump most of the original team( besides tidus wakka and the goalie i want to say.) And recruit characters with marginally better skills and stats.

The skill system iirc was kinda weird cross between front mission 3s and breath of fire 4s. So it could be frustrating at times.

Plus tidus unique stuff if you completed the timed qte sidequest on the boat makes a difference iirc.

I also loved the card game in ff8 and 1/3rd of my playtime was spent on it. Until it took too long to reset shuffle the npcs to get the normal rules set.

I find this somewhat funny after all the resistance for the Switch 2 it's paper products that brought out the FOMO. I guess we all have our weaknesses. I'm not even a fan of FFX. Being on rails made it feel like I wasn't even role playing and I just couldn't engage with the characters despite how overly cinematic it was. I ended up bored and gave up.

Interesting to see them charge $109 for the nsw2 LE. I wonder if that means there will be a $10 paid upgrade from the nsw1 version.

Regardless, I don't really care about the delay. I do have Horizon preordered (ps4) but my fandom for future games in the series is hanging by a thread after the experience of Daybreak 1-2. What I mostly care about is Sky the 1st. Don't butcher it, Falcom.

I created a lrg acct (for the first time) and took it into checkout. No free shipping, no working promo codes, ~$95 for a bad fulfillment experience is just unacceptable. I am probably just going to preorder the standard PS5 version for $55 in GS trade credit. I still have a sealed Sky FC Premium psp release on my Kiseki shelf, so I think I will be content with that for now.

I don't really know how lrg stuff works, but I hope some of you guys were correct in speculating that vgp would eventually sell the steelbook edition. I'd probably bite them.

I feel that when VGP gets LRG stuff, those didn’t have “soft” quantity limits through LRG’s site like what was said for these editions, but VGP has surprised us in the past so who knows.

Guessing VGP does their own bulk orders for stuff they think they can sell on their own and LRG prob offers them excess stock at a discount.

So it's possible VGP will get a few spares LRG has available or VGP might have done their own order of a limited quantity like 100 units.

If anyone's interested, Play-Asia has a physical PS4 version of the Final Fantasy Tactics remaster up for preorder and it supposedly includes English:

VGP confirmed they'll carry it: https://x.com/VideoGamesPlus_/status/1935045743439401156

Probably won't have a ton of copies, so expect it to sell through quickly. VGP's been great about stopping bots and banning people who use them though, so you'll definitely have a fair chance.

I picked up the Japanese PS5 version of Steam-Heart's & Advanced Variable Geo Saturn Tribute. The Saturn version of Steam-Heart's was censored. This modern version has been censored again. City Connection censored a censored game. I guess it's not a big deal since they didn't translate the story so you can just skip it.

Steam Hearts isn’t exactly the best shmup of its era, anyway, so there’s honestly not a lot of point to playing any console version but the PC Engine one. I also wouldn’t pick up Advanced VG by itself, though maybe in a pack with Advanced VG2, which is a significantly better game.

Hadn't realized Yohane was a deckbuilder. Interested.. but I see there is $60 in character dlc. Yeesh.
I noticed that too. WAY too expensive for what that content is. $20 a piece for dlc that comes with 3 playable characters? Yeah, no. The game seems fairly priced though during that sale.

Clair Obscur also on Amazon right now although it doesn't arrive until mid July. I want a copy so I went ahead and ordered.

In other news To Heart Remake is coming out soon June 25th, there is a demo now available. I will likely give impressions of it and a few other Steam Fest demos in the Steam thread. There have been a few new VN announcements that will get posted likely later today.

I, too, got an Amazon copy.

I stopped by the local weebmonger and they had Dandadan in. Great series. Brand new was $35. For the whole season. The shop owner was even agreeing it was awesome to see a whole season of anime be affordable. Grabbed a copy.

They had a used copy of YuYu Hakusho Season One on Blu-ray in mint condition. I grabbed that, too.

For those curious on Radiou on Switch vs Swtich 2 vs Switch1-on-Swtich2 ... I found a video comparing everything. Seems Switch 1 (on original Switch hardware) is slightly worse with framerates and some shadows and character edges but playing the physical Switch 1 version on Swtich 2 fixes the framerates completely. Even the loading for Switch 1 on Swtich 2 was within a second of the Switch 2 version. So the main downgrade is just the shadows not being as good and character edges being less crisp.

I'm not 100% sure I want the game though. It ticks some boxes with the action rpg thing and the exploration but I'm more into modern settings than this 1920/30's period. Still, it's nice to know the physical Switch 1 version isn't a bad option at all. I might change my mind later if the price drops on the switch 1 version.

Here's that video:

I posted my Demo Dump™ in the Steam thread, but wanted to shout out inKonbini in the weeb place. More of a VN with light store management stuffs, this definitely vibes with me. I miss konbinis, my local one I'd stop by few times a week. The bad part is I never got fluent, so it always felt worlds apart. But it was my little slice of comfort, so I can appreciate where this story may be going.

Don't forget even though it hasn't been announced yet for NA, there's Y's X: Proud Nordics coming out soon in Japan.

Is that a sequel or a GOTY / ‘complete’ edition.

Edit: looks like a complete edition. So far I read it’s for switch 2, which should be a huge waste of time for the studio, as the user base for PS4/PS5 is 1000x times greater.

$70 is just OK enough for all that IMHO, but there is some variety there. I'm pretty much over my Lunar want now that I got a copy of the game haha.
