I'm only like half way through the series but the PSP versions, while not awful, are a far cry from the core games. I started with CoO and never having played GoW it wasn't bad but as soon as I started GoW1 the difference was night and day.

Good to know. Three it is.

Thanks y'all. I've knew CoO was a prequel, but I've heard people say to play in release order because of story elements and stuff. But I kind of wanted to just keep that main story going with 3, then have the two PSP ones for last.

The reason you'd want to play through them in release order is more for mechanics than anything else, as 3 and Ghost of Sparta have been refined enough to play much better than the other three games. As long as you've played the first two games, you'll be fine in getting the story of Chains and Ghost after 3 since they're prequels to those two games (Chains before 1 and Ghost before 2). I've played them completely out of order (3>Ghost>Chains>1>2) and it didn't ruin much of anything for me as far as the story goes.

I'm back!  Did everyone miss me?  Anyone even notice I was gone?...

Anyway, I'm completely overwhelmed on trying to catch up with everything I missed on CAG while I was gone.  Quick thoughts on PixelJunk Monsters Vita: It's pretty awesome and well worth $12.  Looks really good, plays well and oh man is it hard.  I at least like to think that I'm slightly above average at tower defense games but this was almost all I played while I was on vacation and I still only beat maybe seven levels.  Still kept playing the levels I was failing over and over trying to find the formula to get past them and didn't mind the high difficulty at all.

If you want some tips, feel free to ask if you get stuck on anything. Just remember that there are certain towers to build to counteract certain waves (Arrows>Spiders, Cannons>Rock Monsters and Round Guys, Air Cannons/Arrows>Flying Guys) and build up your gems to unlock one of the towers to help out for whichever type of enemies are giving you trouble, though hold off on that great air tower until the Giant Bees show up. Pay attention to what waves coming up next and build for that with the spoils of the current wave as you learn the general build order that you need to get through a level as efficiently as possible. Also, make sure you beat the Extra/Special levels since they give you abilities that make other levels much easier to handle with the speed potion being the most useful early on.

As a bonus tip, after getting your initial tower set-up ready, try to run around and touch all of the trees in a level, as there are a few in each level that cough up some extra coins and a gem that helps you get some extra money to build another tower or two early on. It's randomized in every level, so that's something you should do while you're waiting for enemies to run through your death traps.

You're right, the first 1/2-2/3 of the game are introduced way too slow for a "real" gamer, especially on repeat plays, but once you start unlocking things and it stops holding your hands it gets even better.  What the exact charm of it is hard to say since there are definitely better games out there but the art, music and whimsy are so polished and well executed that I adore it.  I think a lot of the problem that gamers have is that they sit down and try to play it hardcore like they would a AAA title when it's still a casual game (albeit one that's tailored to hardcore gamers as well).  I got to 100% (or extremely close) five times over two years (twice on PC, twice on Android and once on iOS) and once I got past the hand holding was every bit as fun as the first time.

Yeah, the only major flaw is that the first playthrough of the campaign is one long tutorial showing you the usefulness of most of the towers and an introduction to the five main types of stages for the second playthrough and all of the extra modes/games that unlock after completing it once. They should've cut the campaign in half for the first time through and give you a few levels to play through each part to understand what's up so that people can get to the real meat of the game more quickly.

On this discussion of GOW, I personally thought Chains of Olympus was the worst story wise and gameplay wise. I hated just about every minute of it, and it was the second to last one I played. If I could go back, I'd play COO first, just so I didn't have the awesome expectations of the other games. I'd do: COO -> 1 -> 2 -> GOS -> 3.

I actually did: 3 -> 2 -> 1 -> COO -> GOS. Terrible order.

I hated the unskippable cut scenes, especially the one before the final boss I had to watch over and over and over each time I died.  At least there was a trophy for watching it something like 3 times.

Did you go 3-2-1 because that's the order you got them in or because you like to stick it to the man and you'll play in your own goddamn order thank you very much?

I loved Ghost of Sparta, story and gameplay wise. I despised Chains of Olympus. Haven't tried GoW 1-3 or Ascension yet, but I only tried the Origins collection because a friend lent me it. So it was a 50/50 experience.

Ascension is worse than chains because at least chains when it came out was mind blowing for a psp game

Backlog be damned, Max Payne 3 for $8 is tempting. The bundle is, too, but it looks like all the DLC is for MP only, which I likely wouldn't spend much/any time with.

Mostly because I got 3 back when I was a member of the Sony RLS site for $10, so I played that right away. Then when I got the HD collection, I've always heard more amazing things about 2 than 1, so I went through that next.

I mean...yeah! I'm a rebel! Down with order, chaos will prevail!

Bought the bundle and am going to sell my physical copy for $14 on eBay. I been doing that with a lot of games. Sold my copy of Alice Madness Returns for almost $20 and bought it on PSN for $5 when it was on sale.

Just buy at low price points, beat quickly and sell (you can borrow my algorithm if you run Linux ) Or just only buy digital at dirt cheap prices. Why do both?

Mathematically Correct.

it honestly depends on backlog. i mean, yes, you're right.  but i know there are times when i do exactly what the original poster does.  for example, i sold my copy of R&C HD collection for 20 to pick up the digital versions.   sure, i could have just played the disc... but i'd rather get out from under the physical copy, 'make' $12.50 now, and get a permanent version... then eventually get around to the disc based and have it only be worth $5.

it's... a give and take.   it only applies to those of us with ridiculous backlogs, probably.  thankfully i don't remember what i paid for r&c (probably gamefly sale) so i don't know if i made or lost overall.   i'm hoping i paid 10 for it, lol.

Well I finally made it through however many pages accumulated in the five days I was gone and didn't see any discussion of Defiance after I left.  Anyone pick that up at the $10 point, or has been playing all along, and have any thoughts?  My feelings are kind of mixed after watching some videos but you really can't find anything more relevant than a month or so after launch.  All these new style MMOs like Guild Wars 2 just have not clicked with me and this seems to have drawn a lot of influence from that pool but maybe in a shooter skin it would feel better.  Not that I need to start a new MMO by any stretch.

I posted this a while back right after it dropped. It's a solid shooter that just happens to have an open world where you can team up with other people that are doing the same missions as you, so it has more of an ambient co-op shooter feel to it than something more serious or crazy like other shooters on the market. If you're at all interested in Destiny, this is basically that same concept with some rougher edges that has even less of a barrier to entry at $10.

i picked it up and it is well worth the $10. its does have a lot of problems like framrate drop, pop in, vehicle physics, pretty much no communication with other players, repetitive missions but with all of that said its really fun to play and i just want to play more. the gunplay is really fun, the pvp is good and i like the loot system and of course probably the best part is the ark falls which are awesome. i haven't done coop yet but i heard its good. its just one of those games that isn't close to perfect but is still a very enjoyable.

http://blog.us.plays...3-new-releases/

Here's The Drop for this week:

PlayStation Network

Dragon’s Crown (Also on Blu-ray / PS Vita Game Card) – Dragon’s Crown thrusts you into a fantastical medieval world packed with labyrinthine dungeons to explore, vile monstrosities to smite, and nearly endless online adventure. Your mission is to dive into the dank underworld, uncovering treasure and strengthening your mettle as you unlock the secret behind the ancient dragon threatening the world. Simple, easy-to-learn controls allow anyone to dive into the fray and enjoy the breathtaking sword-and-sorcery action. In addition to long-lasting gameplay, the game also features a vast array of character customization features – with six wildly different classes to play as, raiding the catacombs for epic loot remains fresh and engaging.

Although intrepid adventurers can certainly enjoy Dragon’s Crown on their own, the real excitement begins when four players team up online for a four-player cooperative mission. And don’t expect the portable Dragon’s Crown to be scaled back in any way: The game will offer the same fluid hand-drawn animation, blazing special effects, and haunting soundtrack on both PS3TM and the new PS Vita, with some special interoperability features between the two versions to be revealed at a later date.

Ibb and Obb – Ibb and Obb is a two-player game. You have to work together to find your way through the non-newtonian world. Gravity isn’t what it used to be. In the bottom half of the world gravity is reversed, enabling ibb and obb to walk on both sides of the floor. You can move from one half to the other through warps in the floor. The layout of the level creates all kinds of puzzles which you’ll only solve if you work together. Collect the diamonds on your way through the world and earn more if you play fast and work like a team.

Superfrog HD (Cross Buy / Cross Play) – Superfrog HD is a 2D amphibian platformer that is an HD remake of Team17′s classic Superfrog, which was released in 1993 on the Amiga. It will feature all-new graphics and will be appearing on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.

Tales of Xillia – Tales of Xillia follows Jude Mathis, a clever medical student attending school in the capital city, and Milla Maxwell, a mysterious woman accompanied by four unseen beings. Players will be able to choose either Milla or Jude at the outset of their adventure through the world of Rieze Maxia, where humans and spirits live together in harmony. The kingdom of Rashugal has been experimenting with a powerful device that has been draining the mana from the world. Realizing the harm it is inflicting on the world, Milla and Jude set off on a journey to destroy it and restore the mana back to the world. Over the course of the game their lives will intersect with a vast ensemble of characters that will teach them the strength of unwavering conviction.

Players will engage enemies with the critically acclaimed Linear Motion Battle System that the Tales of series is famous for. The system allows for real-time movement and attacks, giving the player a more tactile role in the midst of fights. The battle system in Tales of Xillia has been upgraded to Double Raid Linear Motion Battle System to let two characters combine their attacks to utilize devastating dual-character attack, letting fans strategize the best party setup for their style of play.

Demos

  • Doodle God
  • IBB and OBB

PlayStation 2 Classics

The Red Star – The setting is 1939. The European continent is plunged into war. The globe is carved into 50 naval districts. Players must take command of Naval forces from the United States, Japan, Great Britain, or Germany. The objective is to seize control of as many districts as possible, and defend against enemy aggression. From the North Sea to Midway to Okinawa- every conquest is one step closer to victory!

this is probably the most exciting thing to me about the ps4.  i can not wait for games like Destiny (and The Division, even more so) where it looks like there is an 'ambient' (great word for it!) online element.

Like from what i could tell from the trailers, it looks like there will be games where you'll be doing missions with your squad (of, say, 4) and it will automatically join you up for multi-squad missions against big bosses ('events' in destiny, i think they called it) or quick rounds of squad vs. squad (that was my takeaway from The Division, at least).

That's actually the most 'next gen' concept i've seen in terms of advancing multiplayer.   I mean, i love session based online games like Battlefield or The Last of Us... but if someone can get it all to work well ambiently, where right after my squad completes a mission we run into a rogue human controlled squad set up as 'enemies' with no menus, no wait, just seamless integration of squad gaming sessions... that just sounds perfect.

I can't wait to see Borderlands 3.

I don't understand something about the ps+ online storage specifically for ps3 save files. I thought that you could upload multiple save files from the same game, but I'm getting an error message. Tekken Tag 2 has a history of messing up the install or save file over time. So I uploaded a good save file to ps+ online. Now I want to upload the save file again that has since been updated but I get the "file has the same name" error message. I don't want to overwrite the online save file, I just want to add another one but there doesn't seem to be a way to change the name. Is there anything I can do?

Another problem with Tekken Tag 2 is that you can't transfer the save file to a usb drive. Apparantly, that can be blocked if the game publisher chooses.

If a game only has one save file, then then cloud storage can only hold that one file since they have the same name. If it's not locked, you can back-up the save to a USB drive or to another user on the PS3. It would only work if it were a game that allowed you to make multiple saves yourself.

Yeah. I just don't get why some games have copying of the save files completely prohibited by the publishers. I guess maybe they want to stop people from trying to modify their save files to cheat and get weapons, special abilities and even trophies without really earning them in game. The original Borderlands had a major issue with people doing this. I couldn't even count how many times people dropped super weapons at my feet in game that were modded by manipulating their save game.
