Hmm...tempting, but I have seen it at Sam's Club or Costco for like $70 bucks clearance a while back, before I had my 360. I really want to watch Planet Earth in HD.

But those were pretty hard to find for some of us and didn't include the 5 free DVDs (although the rebate form linked to in this thread doesn't mention the 360 HDDVD player is part of the deal--WTF? since I already ordered).

This is a price drop on the HDDVD player--but BB is $30 less than the price drop.

Seems weird overall, I'd jump but not sure if I'd regret it. That coupon seems very fishy (no number on the UPC code? Never seen that before on a BB coupon). Not to mention I'm sure they'd consider the drive a video game accessory (not mentioned on coupon-- or maybe even "video game hardware" which is specifically banned on most BB coupons) before they consider it a DVD player.

The coupon seems YMMV (bigtime) but the price is great. I wonder if MS took the collective yawn at the $179 price announcement as a sign they had to drop it more? Not sure why else BB would put it $30 cheaper.

will the 5 dvds work with this?

Today 8-1-07 M$ is officially dropping the price to $180, and including 5 free movies with it. I'm not sure the link in the OP would work for this as it states "toshiba hd dvd player." Now if you can get it in store for $135 thats a decent deal.

Not at all. The VGA cable is capable of transmitting 1080p and the 360 hd-dvd player doesn't support TrueHD sound anyway, so you're not losing anything by not having HDMI there. If you are using anything other than VGA or HDMI though, you are capped at 720p. Remember, the PS3 is the best Blu ray player and the 360 add on is the worst (or at least one of the worst) HD DVD players, so it's great if you don't have a PS3, but if you do, there is absolutely no use for this unless you REALLY need to see Heroes in HD sooner rather than later. Blu Ray will win, and Universal will start releasing Blu Rays, but when that is going to happen? Who knows. I own both and I do buy HDs, but rarely and obviously only when there is not a Blu ray version available. There is really no comparison between the players. The PS3 blows the 360 add on away, which ALMOST makes up for the fact that the PS3 is basically useless for, oh, gaming...

and you could always sell those HD DVDs for around $10-$12 each on ebay and you'd get a nice HD DVD player for aroudn $80 :-D i still think im going to have to hold off cuz I don't have an xbox 360 elite...oh welll

EDIT: well in that case...im just going to wait period for a blu-ray player (if it really is THAT good...). I guess ill have to do some more research...no impulsive buying for me today :-D bwahahaha

I was going to buy one when the price dropped, and you got 5 free movies. But those movies mainly suck, and you don't get them when you purchase it. If I got them when I purchased it I could stick those on ebay right away. But I'll end up waiting 6-12 weeks or longer to get them.

Ok, I've looked everywhere and there does not seem to be an updated form that mentions the HDDVD player being eligible for the 5 free DVDs. That's the only way I'm keeping a neutered HDDVD player I may or may not ever hook up to my PC.

Should be YMMV in the OP until we see the form that confirms the press release. We all know they don't need much excuse to deny rebates, and since the form is only for Toshiba branded HDDVD players . . .

The other red flag--BB goes to all this trouble to nuke the competition day 1 on the new pricing but doesn't even mention the 5 free HDDVDs on the product page . . .

yeah, the form doesn't mention the 360 add on in the rebates yet, just toshiba players. i've been trying to figure out how this is going to work for awhile now, and won't bite until it clearly states 360 add on in the form.

You can get 1080i using component cable that comes with your Premium/Elite. I have a 360 Premium with the HD DVD Player, connected to my tv using the pack-in component cable, and both games and HD DVD movies are displayed in 1080i.

As for the rebate, there is probably going to be a new rebate form soon that includes the 360 HD DVD Player, seeing the deal just started today. The rebate form that's floating around is from the previous deal that started around April, and that deal did not inlcude the 360 HD DVD Player.

Actually, it outputs 1080i through component. I've tried it with the premium and the elite, the HDMI has an edge, but it still looks far better than any DVD or HD cable/sattelite over component.

As far as comparisons to other HD-DVD players, it's always been reviewed as very solid. The only drawback is the lack of TrueHD, etc., which it converts to DTS or DD 5.1.

Still not cheap enough for me. After purchasing a PS3 (and watching a few blu-ray movies in 1080p) I don't see how I can watch standard definition again.

Well I don't need to say anything about 1080i its been covered, however your wrong about the players. While the 360 it's self is by far considered one of the worst DVD players on the market the add on has had good reviews. The add on does nothing to to help the poor Standard DVD play back the HD Playback does a good job, it also has faster load times then some of the stand alone players. Also a review done by C-net they did benchmarking test and it kept up with the HD-DVD players on the market at the time of its release.

The PS3 on the other hand has one of the best up converting DVD players on the market. But the Blu is not king of the hill it considered by many good but middle of the road and at this point its no longer the cheapest on the market so that check box is no longer valid.

However as an owner of both they both do a great job of letting me watch HD content and I tend to buy what ever I get the best deal on lets just say my HD-DVD collection is bigger and the only Blu rays I have are exclusive to Blu ray. And if you want to know who will win it will be what ever camp has the first sub 200 player in wal mart. I think both will survive because as we see with the live market place and the PSN people are moving to digital distribution, On demand, and Video downloads the only thing holding it back is bandwidth.

1080i is NOT standard definition. You will barely notice a difference between the HD-DVD and the PS3 (I have both).

Plus, get an ELITE, then you have your HDMI port (or 1080p over VGA).

Graet deal though....$135 is a steal (w/5 movies that you can keep or sell)

great price if your on the fence about this....

remember this can be connected to your pc as well..

what a steal..

even without an elite, this looked great on regular 360 with component.. you can barely tell a difference

1080i is for douchebags
