How many bits is the Playstation 3?

Nintendo NES: 8 bits
Super Nintendo/Sega Genesis: 16 bits
Playstation/Saturn/3D0: 32 bits
Nintendo 64/Jaguar: 64 bits
Dreamcast/Gamecube/PS2/Xbox: 128 bits

Is the current generation even measured in bits? If so, what is the current generation?

Bits is entirely irrelevant in terms of measuring system power these days.

The Gamecube wasn't 128 bit. Its CPU was 32, its GPU was 64.

The story was probably similar for the PS2/Xbox, but I don't have the patience to look them up.

And really the number of bits is only necessary when your pipeline is slow, or long and inefficient (without good branch prediction, etc)... and if you want to address a greater amount of physical memory. An esoteric set of features... which explains why they don't tout the "bits" anymore.

64bit != 2x as fast as 32bit. It's really only helpful if its accompanied by better cache, shorter pipelines (or really efficient long ones) and lots of memory. :) Which is why most people won't notice the difference between Core Duo and Core 2 Duo chips...

Unless they're performing nuclear experiments with 18GB of memory... (or photography with a large RAW file...)
