I've spent some more time comparing the TV broadcast vs Blu-Ray screen caps and its not just the DNR and Edge Enhancement that's causing problems, Paramount cranked up the software "Scratch Removal" filter to 11. This filter has mistakingly removed several details from the film. Most notably when the Romans attack in the beginning, the flying arrows have been *erased*. At first I thought maybe this was some overzealous DNR, but the arrows were way too large to be filtered out as high frequency detail. The arrows are clearly present in the HDTV broadcast *and* the DVD. Unfortunately they move so quickly through the shot that they appear to the filtering software as scratches or tears on the film and they've been erased.

Thanks! Gonna hold out this week for The Office on BD the second week of September. Might have to preorder the Snow White SteelBook though.

Fuuuuuuck. Already settled on the doll, but I'd love a steelbook case.

And that Gladiator + Braveheart deal is awesome, though I'm only interested in picking up Gladiator.

Yeah I wonder if it is a steelbook or just one of those metal sleeves that you can put over the regular case. Futureshop in Canada used to do this all the time, if you preordered you got a metal slip case as a bonus.

I've been wanting to watch Gladiator recently, so this deal is pretty sweet with Braveheart.

Although that review of Gladiator was a bit disheartening about the apparent visual flaws.

I hope nobody gets suckered into buying DisneyNature Earth. It's just a 90-min repackaging of footage from the Planet Earth miniseries. If you pay about $15-20 more for the Planet Earth set, you can get about 10 more hours of material.

Hopefully BBY will have the X-Men Trilogy Blu set for cheaper than $64.99 before the $10 off text message code. Amazon and Walmart.com both show roughly $48.99 on the same set. Even with the $10 off that still does not make Best Buy the "Best Buy" on this set.

New sig coming soon.

Can't you just pricematch and then use the code?

Supposedly there are also $10 rebates in both Gladiator and Braveheart Blu's for folks that already own the DVDs. I wasn't planning on buying either, but that makes it very tempting ($8 a piece).

Probably in for Braveheart (seen bits and pieces here and there, enought that I'm interested in seeing the whole thing in HD), but Fuck Gladiator. Paramount screwed the pooch on this one. Why do the idiots at the studios insist on DNRing/EEing the living hell out of anything that moves?

People, if you're interested in Gladiator on Blu-ray, PLEASE, wait for a used copy or something, but don't buy it new, at least not its first week out. Let Braveheart sell well and Gladiator tank, and maybe, MAYBE it will start to register with the studio folks that the digital molestation, which might have had some slight reason to exist back in the early, everyone-was-on-composite-except-S-video-snob-videophile days of DVD, but there's absolutely no point for it nowadays.

I fear for the Blu-ray release of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy....

I was thinking it was stuff from Planet Earth when I saw ads for it when it was coming out to theaters. I just wasn't really sure.

As for Braveheart I wonder how good it is on BD. I was going to pick it up on DVD some time ago but HD and BD came out and thought I would hold out for it to come out on them. Anyone know if it is missing some extras that were on other releases of it? I thought I read on HDD.com that it was going to have new extras on it but at that same time I had also read about Clerks and Chasing Amy coimg out on BD.

The Digital Bits has a good article/review on the quality of both BRs:

http://thedigitalbits.com/#mytwocents

Consider Braveheart 100% bought, but Gladiator I'm really iffy about. Apparently, while the whole "arrows missing in the frame" was overblown, but the haloing effect persists throughout all the original footage of the film and is quite noticeable even to non-enthusiasts.

definitely grabbing Braveheart and Gladiator.
Especially if there are $10 rebate in each case.

Damnit I've been waiting for Gladiator to come out on blu, the price is decent enough to get right away, and then they go and botch the conversion! Guess I'll keep waiting, they will inevitably come out with a better transfer.
