I was even able to pull my wife's Animal Crossing save that's nearly 20 years old at this point from the GC memory card on a Wii to a virtual memory card in Nintendont on vWii on the Wii U, so there are definitely tools to do so.

Not sure how accurate it is, but XBDeals shows a "Ends in X days/months" on some GP games. So it looks like at least some of the store entries for GP games have a counter exposed via an API, not sure why they all don't, though (although 1st party games would make sense to not have an end date)...
