I've never heard of anyone with a 7200rpm drive having heat problems. Sure, in theory you would, but in practice, no one has ever had a problem. And yes, it will cut a second or 2 off of some loads. Someone did a test comparing a 5400rpm drive to a 7200rpm drive. Of course, YMMV.
