Essentially the same thing happened to me. I called corporate about it though. Took all of 5 minutes to get through. May or may not get a good resolution, but screw them.

i kinda wish gamestop would crap or get off the pot with GCs. The YMMV element is extra hassle.

My go to move is to have a credit card and my PUR card in my hand. Then quickly swipe with the PUR. I never had a problem buying GCs with GameStop credit, but I've seen certain clerks kinda hesitate when I do it so I decided to start not even chancing it unless I know the clerk won't ask questions.

Does anyone know if you can trade in multiple controllers at once. I have a few DS4s I'd like to get that 50% bonus on, but I'm not sure what's the general policy on controller trade-ins. I know most stores won't take multiples of games.

I returned The Division and got a used copies of Far Cry Primal and Dynasty Warriors 8 XL (plus a few dollars in credit back) , nothing happened to me.

Less that and more that it's asinine to buy new games for most people here at GameStop unless you have to or they're running some kind of promotion.
