When you press L2 or R2 you look at the area from your character's point-of-view, enabling you to get a better look at your surroundings without aimlessly wandering and depleting your AP gauge.

Controlling the Edelweiss with an analog stick can be kind of awkward when you have to make sharp turns. Other than that, it isn't all that bad. Pressing L2 or R2 to observe the area without draining how much you can advance is definitely a plus in this game.
