Nocturne's easily worth $40 in my opinion. It's pretty high up there on my favorite game of all time list, and probably my favorite PS2 game. As far as difficulty goes, I'd say it's above average in its difficulty, easily the hardest of PS2 Megaten games.

Megaten covered pretty much everything. All my demons had Bright Might, which helped. The moon phases do shift during the battle, but during Full Moon you'll be kicking ass. And Focus + Freikugel makes the battle pretty easy.
