1 year of gamefly $150

So they have this promotion now where you get 20% off a year of gamefly and I bought it. I've really enjoyed the rental model with Netflix, so I think it'll work for me with games too. I'm just sick of having 10 billion game cases lying around and selling games for way less than what they originally cost. I'm also not much of a multi-player gamer except for like 1 or two games like halo or call of duty or some strategy games on pc (which I buy and keep), so I'd rather just get games like halo wars, etc. for a few days, beat them, and send 'em back.

I always found Gamefly too expensive for me. I don't get too much time to play, so spending at even the OP's discounted rate of 12.50 a month, I'd be spending much more than I normally do. If you look at my Spending tab, Ive spent about $170 this year, but I've gotten so many more games than I could have through Gamefly. Not to mention that I could keep all the games I have now forever, and I wouldn't have to pay a single penny more. Also, if you look at my tab, there are months in which I don't buy anything, that would just be a waste of a money to me.

I'm not saying Gamefly is bad, it's just that you need to have a lot of free time to really get the most of it.

True, our habits are way different though looking at your tab (I should start budgeting my shit too now that I think of it). I mean on Black Friday alone I spent more than your annual expenditures. I'm also a grad student with lots of free time to game and no real big expenses to worry about either (no car, cheap phone, rural town rent, assistantship to cover tuition, etc.)

I don't know, the thing is that when I get a new game, I beat it in like 2 days (i.e. Halo 3), and then I barely touch it because I only play multiplayer in games my friends play on Live. I feel like the model just fits my habit. I got Halo Wars today and I'm already through like half the missions and I'll never feel like playing the multiplayer... So gamefly has already paid of 30 bucks off the cost of Halo Wars new on Amazon.

Have you used netflix? what do you think of this model applied to movies instead of games?

I think my traditional idea of owning games has been shattered... In the digital download age I feel like hoarding games is obsolete, it's not going to be like old floppy disc games or cartridge games where stuff's going to be priceless in the distant future... I can already buy half my favorite classic games for pennies on Steam now.

Thanks to GF, I only buy a handful of games every year, generally ones that are gonna have multiplayer communities that don't gonna die in a week or two. Everything else gets rented, beat, and sent back.

I'm not much of a movie watcher, though my brother has a Netflix account. He watches about 2 movies over a weekend, so he makes it more than worth the cost.

As for hoarding games, I'm not like that. A lot of the games I get are through Goozex. I trade away the games I buy when I'm done. Shipping each game costs about $2 for me, so I would have to play 6 games a month to match. Something I can't do. I tend to take my time for playing games. It took me 3 months to beat DMC4 (Game time: 13 and a half hours). I don't have as much time as I'd like, so I end up spending very little in terms of cash. I only use money if I see a really good deal or if it's a Day 1 game, which rarely happens, I only spent full price on 1 game this year and it was Patapon 2 at $20.

We are very different, but I think that's awesome how there can be such a difference in gaming habits, yet still different ways of saving money.

You listed 11 games, only only one of which I would consider a current game. From Gamefly you could have had 3x that including all the new releases. Now OK, maybe you don't have that much time to play, but for $150 it's every game you want, price no object, never any problem if you don't like the game just get another. Best case those 11 games you bought can be sold for $50, or a net cost of $120. Seems to me you are not ahead on that deal.

What? I have spent more than that in one day many times. I dont even want to add up what I spent on games this year. I seriously think its at least $8K or $9K (and that is with a lot of them on sale, clearance, etc. I try not to buy for full price unless its limited or whatever.)

Yeah. I trade in some to a local store called the Exchange, but only games that I bought cheap and didn't like. Most of my game purchases come from clearances and deals anyways.

The only ones I can remember buying for full price recently are Modern Warfare 2 and ODST. The rest came cheap new(eg. Target clearance) or cheap used.(eg. The Exchange)

The Steam Indie bundle had 10 great games including Braid, World of Goo and Crayon Physics Deluxe.

Also, I only put down games I spent actual cash on. I had credit from Amazon where I had bought Flower, Forza 3 and Batman: AA. I also managed to get Katamari Forever through the Goozex Exchange (where you exchange your points for brand new games). I just got a PS3 this year (I didn't include it since I'm only counting games), and I have about 6 games in my collection: Uncharted, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, Batman, God of War Collection, Katamari Forever and LittleBigPlanet. If you look at my tab, I only listed one game which was the God of War Collection at $2.15 (also due to credit). The other five games I got through Goozex or had credit.

There's a lot of hidden stuff beneath the list. But, I'm only listing actual money spent.
