(10-17-04) Kerry: "Bush planning a 'January Surprise'"

E-Z-B

CAGiversary!
Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry accused President Bush on Sunday of planning a surprise second-term effort to privatize Social Security and forecast a "disaster for America's middle class."

Republicans denied the charge as scare tactics with little more than two weeks remaining in a tight election. "It is just flat inaccurate," said GOP chairman Ed Gillespie.

Gillespie said the account of Bush's remarks was a "second-hand report and it is just flat inaccurate." Appearing on CNN's "Late Edition," he also said it was based on "hearsay." Gillespie said he often attends events such as the one cited, but added he couldn't be certain whether he had been at the one featured in the story.
Bush's campaign spokesman was more blunt,

"John Kerry's misleading senior scare tactics are just another example of a candidate who will say anything to get elected," said spokesman Steve Schmidt, "no matter how false his accusations or how contradictory they are with his record of repeatedly voting for higher taxes on Social Security."

And the media says that Kerry "had no message"...

This goes to show that lies and deceit will get you ahead.
Bush talked about privitizing social security when he ran in 2000 during the primaries. It's no surprise.
He also talked about fixing our education system in 2000.

I had the perfect sympsons quote for that, but when I found it I realized it was health care. Oh well, still fits:

Homer- America’s health care system is second only to Japan… Canada, Sweden, Great Britain… well, all of Europe. But you can thank your lucky stars we don’t live in Paraguay!

ideology aside, the article says: Bush has long advocated overhauling Social Security to allow younger workers the choice of putting a portion of their payroll taxes into private accounts.

all this really was about was political gamesmanship. As the article also says, the word privatize has a bad rep.

Not only that, but it is vague as to what exactly Gillespie is responding to, what the original remarks were, what Kerry's actual remark was.

Changing social security was one of the main dividing points between the two candidates, it was never a hidden agenda- but rather one of the few things that someone could easily point to throughout the campaign as a key difference when deciding whom to vote for.

He [Kerry] called it Bush's "January surprise," and said it may be good for "the wealthiest people and the well connected in America, but it's a disaster for America's middle class."

I really don't see how this is prophecy, becuase this is the standard democratic scare tactic response for any Republican action. The rich will get richer and the middle class will get screwed. Plant the seeds of class warfare and resentment. Blah, blah, blah, GONNA GETCHA !!!!

Rich people don't need social security, so I don't see how they are going to benefit from any changes to the system, and how exactly is the middle class going to suffer except for maybe an additional tax...? Social security was never meant to be an income for retirees, only a supplement, so all you people who forgot to save for retirement and think you're going to skate on SS can go fuck yourselves.

We should analyze all of kerry's predictions during the 2 year campaign and see which ones of them have come true. Maybe Kerry is some sort of neo-nostrodamus ? No, maybe he's just like a broken clock.

Its option 3: Its easy to predict what Bush plans to do because he's too stupid to keep anything secret: he rather regularly slips off his handler's leash and spills the beans on what he's planning, and his crew then have to spend the next week doing talk shows denying it. All you have to do to figure out what Bush is going to do is listen to what he says, and ignore what his handlers say he said after he says something that he wasn't supposed to say.

Listening: the next best thing to psychic abilities... (and that applies to a lot more than just Bush/politics.)
