Stores wont take American money, just go and exchange it at a currency exchange. Most Mall have them. A citizen card or a birth cert. will get you across the border.
 
Stores WILL take U.S. money, most major retailers do...some not at the current exchange rate, so you might take a slight hit.

Don't know which part of Canada you're in, but most stores here in Vancouver do take American money..but the exchange rate isn't taht great, but to answer the original question..yes they do take it, I've used my $10 US at a Roger's before and they gave it back to me in Canadian funds, but like I said..the exchange rate at most stores suck, better just exchange them at a Currency exchange to get more bang for your buck.
