30 pastors break federal law
Good. Never really understood why they don't pay taxes anyway.
Separation of church and state goes both ways, so I never had a problem with it....other than shit like this were the get involved in politics anyway.

I hope they get hit hard. The last thing this election needs is a bunch of pastors giving either candidate "God's Seal of Approval", which is going to be hypocritical and ironic, because it is being giving by a flawed human being, not God himself, regardless if you consider that person to be God's representative or not.
I'm guessing they're all endorsing McCain, but it'd be funny to see some actually endorse Obama.
Eh, I'm sure there are plenty of churches out there endorsing Obama.

Uhh.... i meant these particular churches.
You're dreaming if you think they'll lose their tax exempt status. Republicans love it and Dems would never risk riling up the religious base even more.
Well i'm just going by what the law is, i have no idea wtf will happen, you're probably right.
My pastor endorsed Reagan and Bush I because they would overturn Roe V. Wade.

And ...

I think the Catholic Church is still tax exempt.
It would be the IRS that revokes tax-exempt status, and they would only strip that individual church of its status, not the whole religion. Now that the issue has been made public via media, I imagine there will be a follow-up story after the sermom, and the IRS' response.

I'll be extremely disappointed if nothing is done. It would be one thing if they weren't flaunting it like this, nobody would probably ever find out. With this kind of attention, something should be done.

Well you know - due to religion Florida made a law that was specifically targeted at one individual for one issue (Schaivo). Even if the executive branch does try to enforce the law, Congress will just write an exemption to again exlude these pulpit pundits. America's becoming more religious by the second, most people used to know that America wasn't founded on Judeo-Christian ideals 60 years ago, now I'm not so sure.

Oh i know, my own grandmother thinks prayer should be allowed in public schools, along with bible study. It drives me up the wall.

Allowed, after-school in a club is perfectly fine. Enforced during class hours or making it part of the curriculum is not.
*RING**RING* Hi, this is Pope Benedict XVI, are sure God didn't leave a few words for me?
Is the Catholic Church even involved in this story? I can't view the video at the moment and none of the stories say anything regarding Catholic priests. I know it is hip and cool to make fun of Catholics, but I would first like to know if they are even involved.

The unfortunate thing is that throughout history Emperors, Monarchs, and dictators have used religion as a justification of their absolute power. If you are a god, or are the person closest to the Christian God, then how can your opinion be doubted?

The founding fathers had a classical education and they understood this fact intimately - it is one of the reasons they strongly advocated a separation of church and state.

That is why this whole episode is so sad and pathetic - the American people are fortunate to have the opportunity to choose their leaders based on a discussion of real issues and policies, and the religious right is pushing to short-circuit this discussion by framing candidates and their policies in a black-and-white religious context preached from the top-down. Not only that, they also want the government to fund this political propaganda much as a Roman Emperor would have funded a parade in his honor, or a European King would have funded the churches that supported his claim of divine authority.

I fully expect exactly *nothing* to come of this. No repercussions, no vows to never do it again; nada.

What confuses me is that these Pastor's could have just not made a big deal out of it and done it.

Instead, its a big deal now being covered by the media.

Tax exempt or not, if you're going to do something that would be precieved as illegal, be sneaky about it at the least.
