5% Frequent Buyer bonus @ GS?

I traded in a few games to upgrade from my dead Nintendo DS to a cobalt DS Lite, and after the associate hit the total button, the computer surprised both of us by adding an additional 5% to the trade-in values and reducing the total due above and beyond said trade-in by nearly six bucks.

When I looked at the receipt, I saw several $5 bonuses on games - I think that's the $10 bonus when you trade in two next-gen titles - and a line marked "Disc: x.xx Frequent Buyer 5%" that added another $6.20 in trade credit.

I did a search on the forum to see if anybody else had come across this before and what precisely it was, but although the phrase returned five threads, I didn't see any mention of that in it.

Can anybody clue me in?

did you use an edge card? i got the same thing after i traded stuff in to get that $10 for two next gen titles. this is what i got using my edge card:

The Bigs (360): $7
Frequent Buyer 5%: $0.70 -- NOT 5% of $7!
Bonus from 2 Next Gen Titles: $5
TOTAL: $12.70

it should actually be:

The Bigs: $7
Edge Card 10%: $0.70 -- THIS IS CORRECT
Bonus from 2 Next Gen Titles: $5
TOTAL: $12.70

when i traded in, the employee said i kinda froze the system. after a minute, it randomly gave me "an extra $6." but it really wasn't what happened. all it did was change my edge card line into reading Frequent Buyer 5%. so in my case, i didn't really get anything extra.

if i find the receipt tonight, i'll scan it.

You know, I remember I was buying 2 memory cards a while back, 1 for me and 1 for my brother. Well, I went to the first GS, bought the only one, and went to the other and bought another one. After I walked out, I was wondering why the 2nd GS charged me slightly more and apparently the first GS gave me the said Frequent Buyer discount. I just thought it was random, or is it really something like the 100th time you use your Edge card :whistle2:s

I had them scan my expired card because they couldn't find me in the system when they wanted the phone number for the trades I was doing. I figured, like the Best Buy reward zone card, maybe scanning the edge card would find me and I wouldn't have to do that song and dance again with people waiting in line behind me.

Sounds like what you're telling me is that even though the edge discount is expired, that card is still useful for that 5% bonus?

Holy crap, you know what, you're right. All of those discounts were 10% of the trade-in amount, not 5%.

But my edge card is expired!

I don't think it would be possible for GameStop to do anything like a "frequent buyer", because they do not keep a computer database of member purchases/information/etc... that I know of. For example, when I got a Gamecube recently and got the extended warranty with it, I asked if the warranty will be in their database, and the employee said they weren't database-based. Same thing with the EDGE card, you have to swipe it every time you go their, they do not have a system that knows who you are. In comparison, I have an MVP card at Gamecrazy and I never actually give them the card (partly because I lost it several years ago), they just take my name and confirm some information and its all stored on their system.

Man, with all the purchases I do at GS, I have yet to see anything like this.

What was the date that these items were purchased and where? Just curious. I've been to a ton of GS stores and I've yet to notice this...

In fact, I posted about this very same thing in the Gamestop $10 bonus deal thread last night - your search should have shown that (just go to that thread and look back a couple pages as there was some more discussion of it there). I brought the wrong Edge card with me and they looked up my last trade (where I used the good card) and applied it from there. I got the same text even though I got the usual (and expected) 10% Edge bonus.

Even though he said that is what happened, perhaps there is really a provision to override the lack of an Edge card for "frequent buyers" who forgot their card or are otherwise good customers.

At first I thought it was advance notice that they were degrading the Edge bonus from 10% to 5% - like they changed the text but not the actual math yet. But I don't know what to think about it now.

But maybe it is something that will eventually only give 5% but is for the reasons I stated above (override for special customers).

I believe it. It returned five threads in relation to my search string, but in reading them I didn't see anything about the bonus.

Possible I overlooked it, but I wanted to toss it out there in case the matches were hitting on just one of the words in my string and weren't really related to my query at all.

Thing for me is, I've only had the one Edge card. There isn't a good one for them to find in the system. The guy who rung me up doesn't know me well enough to just give me that discount (there are guys at that store who would, but none of them were working), and he was as surprised as I was, so either he's a good actor, or the system just...did something.
