720p vs. 1080p for PS3 Gaming?

Just looking for some feedback on this. I am looking at getting a new HDTV and was wondering if there would be a huge difference between these. My couch would be about 10-15 feet away so would it matter?

i've always read that you need a tv bigger than 42" to be able to really benefit from 1080p. and as far as i can tell most ps3 games are 720p anyway.
 
I have a hard time telling the difference from that distance away. 1080p gaming is overrating in my opinion.
 
I have a Sony 40" 1080p tv that I use all the time for my PS3 in my bedroom, and it's not worth it past about 6 feet. I can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p within 6-8 feet, but further you can't tell really. Most games are 720p anyway. Unless you really want 1080p for Blu-ray or to be future proof, I'd save the money. I regret splurging on my tv. Or if you make really good money and find a great deal on a 1080p get one. Otherwise go 720p.

p.s. Get a hdtv with a high contrast ratio though, that's important.

Yes, and the only reason I'd argue in favor of a 1080 set is because they tend to have better specs overall (like contrast ratio).
 
I have a 42" Vizio running 1080P and I think there is a huge difference when set to 1080P vs. 720P. (And I sit about 6-7 feet away from it when I game or watch TV/BR Discs.) Everything is allot clearer and the colors are allot richer. The key is to use an HDMI cable. If you don't then you won't see much of a difference.
 
to be honest man the resolution is like third when rating how a screen looks. The contrast ratio is definitely more important, find a tv that you like the picture of and pick that bad boy up.

(i have a 1080p but also a 720p and as long as you like the picture the resolution is negligible)
 
I would get 1080p for the simple fact that you can see Blu-Ray at it's best. I have a 52 inch Sony XBR4 and blu-ray movies can be downright jaw-dropping. My sisters boyfriend on the other hand has a 40-something inch Olevia and on his tv the same blu-ray movies do not even look noticeably better then upconverted DVDs.
 
For PS3 Gaming I think it depend on the size you are looking for and how much you want to spend. For about a year I was using a 32" Samsung 720p LCD (Same type the XBOX360 Kiosks use) and it looked pretty good for the price (it was $1500.00 @ that time now I think you can get it for about $1000.00). Since then I've upgraded to a 42" Samsung 1080p LCD ($1500.00 ridiculous how prices fluctuate over time...) and I can say that both games and movies look noticibly better. Also as linkmon said in an earlier post make sure you are using an HDMI connection to get the best quality possible.
 
Depends on the size of the TV and how far away you'll be sitting from it. But most HDTV these days over 40" support 1080p anyway... it's hard to find a 720p set under 40".
