80GB PS3 with BC - Not Reading DVDs or PS2 games

js097

CAGiversary!
My PS3 with backwards compatibility suddenly stopped reading PS2 games and DVDs. Thankfully, it still plays BLU and PS3 games. I assume the DVD laser is broken. I called Sony and they offered to fix it for $175. Or a new slim PS3 for about $140 (no BC, bigger HD, fewer USB ports).

I have a cheap old PS2, but I would really like to be able to play dvds on my PS3.

Do you think the dvd laser is just dirty - when I insert a dvd, nothing happens. Should I try cleaning the lens myself?

Hello-

I don't know if this will fix your problem, but a friend of mine had the exact same issue. He didn't realize one day that he ejected a PS3 game disc while it was still autosaving. This lead to corrupt save data on his PS3, and it would no longer play PS2 games, DVDs, and when he pressed the home button while in a PS3 game it would stall and then lock-up on him.

I had him go into his game save data/system data and look through the various save files, and sure enough, three corrupted chunks of data were there. He deleted all three and restarted his PS3, and voila, it worked perfectly again.

Or u can put the ps3 in diagnostic/safe mode and choose option 3 - Restore file system. My ps3 stopped reading everything bluray, so unfortunately i have to clean the laser occasionally to get it workin.
