1. Buy a "broken" iPod mini with a dead drive (sad face icon) on eBay. Going rate is around $45-50.

2. Buy an 8GB CF card for around $70. This size seems to be the sweet spot for flash pricing right now.

3. Follow the instructions.

4. Post about it on the CAG forums.
Meh... My 2gb 1g Nano was $50 and all it needed was a new front and back plate.
I hate nanos. They are terrible. i would never pay 150 dollars for a 2gig, never mind 50. They are way to small, hold way too little music, and are easy as hell to break. I am thinking about trying this... but something is holding me back
Considering the Mini is the size of my 5G video ipod it wouldn't make sense for me to get a mini...
Well, not really. But I would certainly choose the iPod with video over a mini unless I was using it for jogging or something. But for the price, the mini could be pretty good.
This will drive up the prices of dead iPods, though.
They've already been driven up. I found that instruction page on Digg, so...

This has actually been possible for a long time (I recall reading about someone replacing the microdrive in their mini back when they were the current model), but I think it's only recently that CF prices fell to a point where it was worth doing, since now you can up the capacity.
